Efficient quality control of liquid samples

The efficient solution for the quality control of liquid samples

Quality control of liquid samples without the measurement of density and refractive index is difficult to imagine today. Digital instruments have helped to make the determination of these two param-eters much more important in routine quality assurance.High resolution instruments alone do not, however, guarantee accurate measurements because the results can still be influenced by the operator or by sample-related effects. METTLER TOLEDO mea-surement systems simplify the determination of density and refractive index and ensure that incor-rect measurements are either impossible or become immediately apparent.

Read in the dataSample identification and user name can be entered with the bar code reader. No keys to press!

Place the sampleThe sealed sample vials are not opened until just before the sample is measured. No evapo-ration or contamination of the sample is possible.

Press the Measure keyOne single keystroke is enough to fully automatically determine the density, the refractive index, or both parameters. In doing so it also initiates sample delivery before and sample recovery after the measure-ment, as wells as thorough cleaning and drying of the system.

Read off the resultsThe measurement printout includes more than user names, results and sample data: the user is also informed if, for example, sample-or system-related problems oc-curred during the measurement.

Density meters and refractometers

Density and refractive index – simultaneously or one at a time

The days of manual determinations with pycnometers, hydrometers or optical Abbe refractometers belong to the past. The METTLER TOLEDO digital instruments determine density and refractive in-dex simply, with great accuracy and, depending on the instrument, even simultaneously. Automatic conversion of the results to user-defined units allows the instruments to be used for special applica-tions. The built-in Peltier thermostat ensures that the sample temperature is accurately controlled – no need for water baths.

Density and refractive indexOne measurement – two param-eters! The METTLER TOLEDO DR40/45 Combined Meters simplify something commonplace in many industries: The simultaneous determination of density and refractive index. Measuring both val-ues with the same instrument increases speed, simplifies procedures and en-hances the accuracy of the results.

In many industries (e.g. petrochemical or flavors and fragrances) the deter-mination of both values is already a standard method. In other industries, the simultaneous determination of density and refractive index is used to determine concentrations in multi-component mixtures. That’s no problem for the DR Combined Meters – besides the density and refractive index, they can also cal-culate up to two results from the density, the refractive index or from both results using formulas or concentration tables previously entered.

DE

RERefractive index RE40D, RE50

The RE refractometers determine the refractive index using a method based on total reflection. Even turbid or dark samples can be measured with this technique. The instruments are practically maintenance-free, thanks to the latest technological developments – no moving parts, long-life LED light source and an inert sapphire prism. The accurate thermostating of samples with the built-in Peltier thermostat ensures reliable measurements. The results are displayed as refractive index, in Brix or in other user-defined units.

Instrument Limit of Error (nD) Temperature range

RE40D 1 · 10-4 (0.1 Brix) 15 … 70 °C

RE50 5 · 10-5 (0.03 Brix) 15 … 50 °C

Density DE40, DE45, DE51The DE density meters measure the resonance fre-quency of a special glass cell filled with sample. The density of the sample is calculated from this frequency and is displayed directly as density, specific gravity or in other units such as Brix, API degrees or alcohol concentration. The DE density meters are also suitable for the measurement of viscous samples because they automatically correct the influence of sample viscosity on the oscillation behavior of the cell. All DE density meters are supplied with 2 certified den-sity standards (water).

Simple access to unlimitedpossibilities

Concentration determinations without a pocket calculatorAll the DE/RE/DR models display the concentration of two-component mixtures directly – just enter the table. Each instrument can store up to 9 such concentration tables. If this is not enough, you can store additional tables on memory cards and load them as required. Relevant concentra-tion tables can be found at www.density.com and www.refractometry.com or in the literature.

Instrument check at the stroke of a keyAll instruments have to be adjusted from time to time. This can be dangerous – if an adjustment is not carried out properly, all subsequent measurements are wrong! This is why all the DE/RE/DR models have a Check function which allows you to easily check whether adjustment of the instrument is necessary. And if you want to be on the safe side, the time interval for the instrument test can be set. This guarantees that the measurement accuracy of the system is checked at regular intervals.

Password pleaseMeasurement methods and instrument settings can be protected with a password. This prevents unintentional or unauthorized changes of the instrument settings.

Temperature compensationMeasurement values can be determined at one temperature and auto-matically converted to another temperature. For temperature conversion, comprehensive temperature compensation functions are available.

Data backup included1)

Measurement methods, data from adjustments and instrument checks as well as measurement results can be stored on memory cards. This, for example, allows measurement methods to be easily transferred from one instrument to another.

Official methodsThe DE45/DE51 density meters and the DR40/45 Combined Meters have built-in tables to convert density into sugar content in Brix (Table 109, NBS Circular 440), Alcohol content in Vol-% (Table N° 3, NBS Circular 19, OIML Table IVa) as well as for temperature compensation according to API (ASTM D 1250, Table 53A, 53B and 53D). The RE refractometers and the DR Combined Meters use an official table (ICUMSA) to convert refractive index to Brix, or HFCS421) or HFCS551) (Physi-cal Properties Table Corn Products, 1991).

Easy entry of sample dataWhen individual samples or series of samples are measured, the instrument has to be told what is to be measured (sample data), how the measurements are to be performed (methods) and who is operating the system (user name). The pos-sibility of entering sample files in dialog form or directly as a table, as well as the barcode reader, make the transfer of all necessary GLP data quick and easy.

Statistical evaluations as requiredStatistical evaluation of measurement values can be performed as desired when the measurements are completed (stored results) or automatically after each measurement.

Efficient exchange of dataAll the DE/RE/DR models have three serial interfaces for the connection of a printer, bar code reader and a computer. The DataCapture software allows mea-sured values to be acquired in the PC either directly into Microsoft EXCEL tables or as ASCII text files.

Automation

SC

Highly reliable with minimal effort

The SC1 and SC30 sample delivery and cleaning units reduce the work involved in the determination of density, refractive index, or both. The sample delivery and cleaning units are not only the best guarantee for a fast payback, they also help to prevent measurement errors and to save cleaning solutions.

SC1 and SC30. The decisive step from measurement instrument to measurement system.

Automatic sampling. The instru-ment itself detects when the cell is filled with sample and automati-cally switches off the pump.

Reliable sampling. Samples are delivered to the cell under pres-sure and not, as often the case in other systems, under suction. The advantage of this technique is that no errors occur with samples that tend to degas (no formation of air bubbles). Furthermore the systems are suitable to measure samples with a viscosity of up to 30’000 mPa·s.

Sample carryover eliminated. The inside and outside of the sampling nozzle is thoroughly cleaned and dried after every measurement.

Automatic error detection. With the SC1 and SC30 sample de-livery and cleaning units, the DE density meters, RE refractometers and the DR Combined Meters are able to automatically detect the most frequent sources of error in density and refractive index mea-surements (such as air bubbles, inhomogeneous samples or sol-vent residues) and to warn the user accordingly.

Changes in the sample are not possible. The sealed sample vials are only opened just before the actual measurement. No evapora-tion or contamination of the sample is possible.

Efficient cleaning. After the mea-surement, the system is rinsed with two solvents. The first solvent is to remove the sample; the second is a solvent of high vapor pressure

to dry the system completely. Both solvents are mixed with air and pumped through the system at high speed. The resulting pulsed flow provides a very efficient me-chanical cleaning.

Special applications – no problem at all! The SC1 and SC30 sample delivery and cleaning units can return the samples back into the vial after the measurement. The samples may thus be used for other purposes after the determination of the density and/or refractive index.

In cases where the density of samples which are very highly viscous or even solid at ambient temperature have to measured, the SC1 and SC30 may be equipped with electrical heating.
