Overview: Day one of the laboratory medicine conference will be focusing on laboratory and quality management with an
emphasis on the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases in Africa such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes
and prostate cancer. Little is known about maturity onset diabetes of the young on the African continent and
delegates will have the unique opportunity of hearing about it from a leading researcher. Also featuring prominently
will be Point of Care Testing and its challenges in Africa on improving patient outcomes. It further delves into the
important role of connectivity in managing and integration of POCT results. There is also the issue of Ebola and other
pathogens that have attracted global attention and their propensity to be highly contagious and this will be
discussed by a leading authority on the African continent as a plenary lecture.

Overview: Infections and antibiotic resistance continue to plague Africa, and this will be the focus of this track. Great advances
are being made in the field of microbiology using molecular techniques and will be discussed in the session on Medical
Microbiology and followed up by a slide seminar on Infectious Diseases. Syndromic Testing is gaining widespread
attention and delegates will be informed on how this is making an impact in laboratory diagnostic testing. Glandular
lesions of the cervix are encountered frequently and need to be diagnosed early and will be addressed from both a
cytology and histology perspective. The final talk in this track will be on preanalytical errors that can lead to
diagnostic errors and how these errors can be prevented will be discussed.

Theme: Healing the healers A call to action
Overview: Depression, burnout and suicide occur at higher rates in the medical profession than in any other field. A large
percent of healthcare professionals are clinically depressed and some even commit suicide. Yet, due to mental
health stigma in the workplace, healthcare workers are reluctant to disclose their mental health struggles to their
supervisors. They fear that disclosure may impact their job security, performance appraisals, career growth, and
even loss of their license.
For the first time at Africa Health, we will bring you a one-of-a-kind platform to discuss the management of stress,
burnout and anxiety within the healthcare workforce. Our speakers will deliver strategies to help healthcare
