NOW WE REMEMBER TWELVE

CAPT JOHN VINCENT “JACK” FRANCIS (Quantico Marine Athlete – Football)

KIA – VIETNAM 2-10-1970

Earlier this year, and by way of Glenn Custar, news reached the reunion group of Jack Francis’ demise in Vietnam. Capt Francis was 25 years of age and serving his second tour of duty when he died in a helicopter crash in the South Central Region of South Vietnam, in Quang Nam Province. Captain Francis hailed from Elmhurst, IL and is interred at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Justice, Cook County, IL (Section 61, Lot E6’2208). His name is on the Vietnam Wall at Panel 14W – Row 12. Jack was a Center on the 1968 Quantico Marine Athletes Football Team.

BRUCE CAPEL MEMORIALIZED AT ANTHEM (ARIZONA) VETERANS

MEMORIAL The following is excerpted from an email dated June 26, 2018 to Mike Barrick from Steve Capel, brother of fellow Athlete, Bruce Capel … “Hi Mike,

What an amazing pleasure to hear from you. The Marine Athletes of the ‘60s is a group that our family is exceptionally fond to embrace. They have held dear to their hearts the memories of the Marines they were teammates with that were lost in service to their country! All with grace and courtesy to the families of those men that were lost. Anthem, Arizona, is special to our family for two reasons: the Anthem Veterans Memorial, and our daughter Lisa and her husband Dennis Jones who live there… As interest in developing a veterans memorial at Anthem began, Lisa was particularly caught up in its progress! She has kept us informed, and we have been fortunate to be there for several remembrances. There are actually two pavers for Bruce, one from Lisa's family and one from my wife and I. It is indeed a fitting memorial. I believe I have heard it commented upon as one of the finest memorials west of the Mississippi. Our family has been to several Quantico Athletes of the ‘60s reunions, especially as they occurred at Quantico. My wife and I live near Richmond, VA and have been very graciously received at those wonderful reunions! If you should happen to find yourself coming to a reunion at Quantico, please let me know. I will make doubly sure that we get there and look forward to meeting you… Thanks again. To this day, it is heart-warming to know that those who sacrificed so much are still loved and remembered, especially as we approach July 4th!”

AnthemVeteransMemorial

At precisely 11:11 a.m. each year on November 11, Veterans Day, the sun’s rays pass through the ellipses of the five Armed Services pillars to form a perfect solar spotlight over a ground-level mosaic of The Great Seal of the United States. The memorial was designed by Anthem resident Renee Palmer-Jones. The five marble pillars represent the five branches of the United States military. They are staggered in size (from 17 ft to 6 ft) and ordered in accordance with the Department of Defense prescribed precedence, ranging from the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, and the United States Coast Guard. The brick pavers within the Circle of Honor are inscribed with the names of over 750 U.S. servicemen and women, symbolizing the support for the Armed Forces. The pavers are red, the pillars are white, and the sky is blue to represent America’s flag. The circle represents an unbreakable border. Jim Martin, Anthem resident and chief engineer, was responsible for aligning the memorial accurately with the sun. The monument is dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of the United States armed forces. The pillars provide a place of honor and reflection for veterans, families, friends, and those who want to show their respect to those service men and women who have served, and continue to courageously serve, the United States of America.

REUNIONREGISTRATION

Shirley Jones and Carol Jonic checking attendees in

and handing out Reunion Welcome Folders

As people started to arrive, you could feel the excitement build. Hand shakes, high-fives, wide smiles, laughter, slaps on the back, even a few hugs, loud “How ya doin’s”, and a few other unique greetings amongst the Marine Athletes foretold how this reunion would transpire – PERFECTLY!! Added to the Marines’ greetings were the ladies’ and guests’ expressions of friendship and “…we’re so glad to be here” and “…it’s so good to see you” and “…it’s so nice to meet you” sentiments! -- MORE PERFECTION!! The grand hallway was the setting for registration…and a few feet away, the Hospitality Room--hub of the daily, ongoing gatherings, meetings, and socializing – the things that always make this yearly event so enjoyable and memorable! Because of John Kopka’s influence and fame amongst civilian and military citizenry and organizations in the greater Jacksonville area, he was able to acquire USMC hats, water bottles, and light weight backpacks to give as gifts to each attendee as they signed in at registration.

“THANK YOU JOHN” WOW!!

Hospitality Room Rated “Tipp -Top!!”

How he does it is anyone’s guess, but Ron “Tipp” Timpanaro did it again. “King” of the Hospitality Suite--as he was dubbed last year in Indian Wells-- made sure a variety of beverages and a variety of snacks were abundant throughout our stay in Jacksonville. Congeniality, Camaraderie, and Cheer were the three Cs of the Hospitality Room as folks enjoyed the comfort of soft sofas, and cushy club chairs which host John Kopka arranged to be brought in, from a friend’s furniture outlet, to make the Hospitality Room feel more home-like. It worked!! (It was becoming obvious that John might be King of Onslow County!!) Whether seated in comfort, gathered around a table, or congregating near the Hospitality Room “bar”, lots of chatter, laughter, and OORAHs were heard non-stop.

Students from Marine Corps Combat Service Support School earning community appreciation documents (to be included in their Service Record Book) for strong-arming the furniture brought in for the Hospitality Room. Oh, to be young again!

Jacksonville-Onslow County Chamber of Commerce on Site at Reunion Registration

Arranged by ‘King’ Kopka, welcome tote bags containing a generous supply of information regarding things to do and see in the Jacksonville area were provided by the Jacksonville-Onslow County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber also arranged for bus transportation to Camp Lejeune for Friday’s tour and for the ‘free-time’ trip to the Lejeune Memorial Gardens. Thank you Chamber of Commerce!

Mike and Rachel Barrick receive their welcome totes from

Chamber representative, Lisa Murabito.

CAMP LEJEUNE TOUR A HUGE SUCCESS

Friday Morning Destination: Camp Lejeune! Eager to board the buses were some 50 Marines, spouses, and guests about to get a real-time glimpse of combat training for today’s young Marines. Camp Lejeune’s Simulation Center was the focus, and all attending got the chance to experience hands on use of weapons and vehicles which provide training by way of virtual digital images coupled with authentic materiel. In the photos, members of our group are testing their skills with the very state-of-the-art simulation equipment used by today’s Marines in their intensive combat training…

These descriptions are based on information available on the website lejeune.marines.mil. The Infantry Immersion Trainer (ITT) is a revolutionary training system that prepares Marines and Sailors for deployment to today’s battlefields. The facility uses virtual reality to re-create foreign urban scenes – right down to authentic sights and smells – to give troops the necessary skills to survive and win war confrontations. The virtual environment places future war fighters in realistic combat scenes that confront them with a range of possible and/or likely scenarios that require split-second decisions and actions. The high-tech simulation provides a safe environment for learning how to prevent fatal errors before troops are exposed to the real boots-on the-ground threat. Our group was given a demonstration of this system via a walk-through of a mock Afghan village.

The HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer (HEAT) provides Marines in training the oppor- tunity to experience vehicle roll-over conditions, and to rehearse and physically execute steps to survive such an event — safety, egress, awareness of self and crew skills needed to execute roll-over procedures, and conduct tactical perimeter drills. HEAT supports USCENTCOM requirements for all Marines and Sailors to complete vehicle roll-over training before deploying to designated combat zones. A young Marine showed us how it works.

Mike Barrick wrote this about the Lejeune trip:

“It’s been 54 years since I was at Camp Lejeune. Visiting the simulator training facilities provided a unique opportunity to see hi-tech classrooms the current generation of Marines have for training. Our tour members got the opportunity to call in airstrikes, ‘drive’ trucks in a convoy, and defend the trucks from attack. A ‘special training classroom’ has been built as a replica of an Afghan village. But the best part of the tour for me was the time spent at the laser simulated rifle and pistol range! I could have spent hours at the range and kept asking for more shooting time. (A Google search for laser simulated pistol range will locate videos and articles about the technology.) Thanks John for this opportunity!!” -- Mike

VeryWorthwhile

In a lovely and tranquil setting not far from our hotel, twelve of our group discovered interesting and impressively well-done displays memorializing tragic events which have occurred in recent US history…

The Beirut Memorial Attack on US Embassy

The 9/11 Memorial Attack on the World Trade Center, NYC

Montford Point Marines Memorial 20,000 WWII African American Marines segregated from the regular Marine Corps

The Vietnam Memorial All names in alphabetical order

The larger-than-life EGA sculpture caught everyone’s attention. Very impressive indeed! The consensus was that The Lejeune Memorial Gardens should be a stop for anyone and everyone visiting the Jacksonville area! Especially Marines!!

OUR SPEAKER LtGen Gary McKissock

Gary, as he asked us to call him, spoke heartfelt words of praise for the young Marines of today – their character, their intelligence, their courage, their love of country, their willingness to be warriors, their great value to our nation, and their excellent training make us proud of the modern Corps. Gary’s background in the Marine Corps is nothing short of

in 1966. Gary is a graduate of the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Gary had numerous tours in the Operating Forces, two involving combat operations. He commanded the I Marine Expeditionary Force logistics support base at Khanjar, Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. He has also served at Camp Lejeune, NC as Commanding Officer, Brigade Service Support Group 8; Commanding Officer, 8th Motor Transport Bn; and Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Service Support Schools. In June 1994, LtGen McKissock was promoted to BGen and assumed duties as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Installations and Logistics (Plans) at Headquarters Marine Corps. In July 1995, he was assigned as the Commanding General, 1st Force Service Support, Camp Pendleton, CA. In May 1997 he was promoted to MajGen and transferred to Albany, Georgia, where he became Commanding General of Marine Corps Logistics Bases and, concurrently, Commanding General Marine Corps Material Command. Since his retirement, Gary has remained active serving on corporate boards, as a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Defense and Business at UNC Chapel Hill, as Commissioner on the U.S. Congress mandated Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq, and as the advisor for logistics issues for the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy for Middle East Regional Security. He is currently the Chairman

A PLACE OF HONOR FOR MEMORIAL TABLE… THE CENTER OF THE BANQUET HALL

More than sixty attended the traditional Saturday evening banquet -- always the (bittersweet) finale of the reunion. Following the Pledge of Allegiance and words of welcome by John Kopka, and as is our custom, special tribute was paid to our 12 revered, absent Athletes. King Dixon focused everyone’s attention on the Memorial Table set in the center of the banquet room. He reverently described the poignant elements of the Table’s setting and reminded us that these extraordinary men are why we come together every year for our treasured reunions.

King’s words were based on the following guidelines for a memorial table: The table is round to show that our concern for our 12 is never ending. The white tablecloth represents the purity of their response to our country’s call to arms. The empty chair is a reminder that our comrades cannot join us here. The black napkin stands for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. The single red rose reminds us of families and loved ones. The red ribbon on the vase represents the love of our country which inspired the fallen to answer the nation’s call. The candle and its yellow ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet unaccounted for. The slices of lemon on the bread plate remind us of our Marines’ bitter fate. The salt on the bread plate represents the tears of their families. The inverted wine glass reminds us that our distinguished comrades cannot be with us to drink a toast or join the festivities of the evening.

impressive. Here is a look at his career… At the time of his retirement from the Corps in 2002, Gary served as the Deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps for Installations and Logistics. He graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and was Commissioned in the Corps in

of the Economic Development Committee of the NCMAC. The reunion crowd showed their appreciation for General McKissock (Gary) coming to the banquet as keynote speaker and for his enlightening, conversational, no-notes delivery. He received a lengthy and resounding round of applause!

MR. MC, ED DEAR

ON TOP OF HIS GAME – As Usual!

Despite a sumptuous buffet, Ed preferred a Happy Meal!!

So Host John Kopka presented him with one!!

The crowd always reacts to Ed with laughter and full attention as he introduces attendees who are special guests, or who are at a Quantico Athletes Reunion for the first time. Special guests this year were Bea McInturff and son Chris, Margie Carrington, Marge Gresham and son Kreg, and Gloria Smalley, who accompanied her parents, Roy and Ann Smalley. First timers this year were Robert and Mary Gardner of Swansboro, NC, just a few miles from Jacksonville. Mary treated the crowd with the story of how she and husband Bob met…she described herself as Miss Camp Lejeune MCX…she was working there when the meeting occurred. Robert (Bob) Ulrich of Cary, NC, also joined the reunion ranks as a first timer this year. Taking full advantage of the limelight, Ed assisted Polly Kopka with the door prize drawings, and he once again led the group in the traditional singing of the Marines’ Hymn at the close of the banquet. A cappella, no less!!! Job well done, Ed.

Kopka presents Gary with token of appreciation. No, That’s not a Happy Meal!!

“We have been attending QMA reunions since the host city was Naples, FL, where the event was held in the most amazing and beautiful resort. This year’s reunion brings no different results, yet, again it is held results; yet again it was held in an outstanding

location and city. The planned activities were put together with everyone in mind. Very well thought out. Robert and I enjoy being a part of the reunion—it has given us the opportunity to meet and make so many new and forever friends. I personally enjoy the many moments during the weekend just meeting some of the ladies that perhaps I didn’t meet the year before and just sitting together sharing and laughing with each other. I hope that the reunion committee continues to plan and put together these reunions for many years to come.” – Robert and Glynis Dudley

“Awesome, especially seeing and trying the simulators. Technology has changed from our day! It’s always great to be back in a Marine environment and get to- together with such a special group. Thank you

Board and Host for all of your hard work. It was well worth it to us.” -- Don and Janice Kelly

“The tour and simulators were excellent! One of us proved to be an outstanding Humvee driver and an excellent marks-woman in the firearms simulator building. As usual the low-key business meeting was a highlight. John Kopka’s comments were both illuminating and entertaining. As a small-town retired coach, I readily related to his ‘Tech savvy to holy sh*t! What’s this?’ Good Banquet! Good Speaker! Great Reunion!”

-- Don and Wanda Tidwell

“We’ve had a fun time. The simulations at Camp Lejeune were an exceptional experience, especially for Janice. The hotel and hospitality room were perfect. And, of course, seeing and visiting with everyone was a treat as always. We appreciate all the work and effort everyone has put into helping all of us have a great reunion.” -- Mike and Janice Parker

“We had a great time at every event. We especially enjoyed the tours at Camp Lejeune. Gained more respect for the Marines of today.”

“A big Thank You to John and Polly Kopka for such a great reunion. Also to Carol Jonic, Ron “Tipp” Timpanaro, and all involved with the planning of this 2018 Reunion. My last reunion was with Bear in 2008. It’s been an emotional return for me to my Marine family, but I finally did it with Polly’s encouragement.

Thanks Polly, I needed a push. I’m so proud to be a part of this Quantico Marine Athletes family. Taking the first step was well worth it, and my heart is filled with all the love I received. See you in San Diego.” -- Margie Carrington

“John and Polly, Carol and George – Thanks for putting on the reunion. I enjoyed the program at Camp Lejeune and was inspired to be around the young Marines of today. Always good to see my old teammates – Common theme: we all have grandchildren graduating from high school. Hope everybody

stays safe and well until the next reunion.” -- Semper Fi, Mike Cotten

“A big shout out of appreciation to Polly and John Kopka for their planning and hard work to make this reunion a memorable event. The Hilton Garden Inn was a good site for the reunion due to its convenience and location. The Hospitality Room, all meetings, break-

fast, and the Banquet were at the hotel. There were two activities which made this reunion special -- the MCB Camp Lejeune tour and the planned free-time when we joined in on the tour of the Lejeune Memorial Gardens. This was a top-notch reunion. We are glad we attended!” -- Mike and Rachel Barrick

“Congratulations for an enjoyable and successful Reunion in Jacksonville, N.C. The Quantico Athletic Reunion teamwork was apparent, which provided all the attendees with opportunities to show their Marine Corps comrades their Marine Corps DNA still flows within them all. John and Polly are to be commended for a “job well done.” Carol worked her magic once again coordinating all of the detailed administrative tasks that make our reunions seem “easy” . Of course, every great woman has a great man at her back - thanks George. Our Food Czar (Ron Timpanaro) set up the hospitality room beautifully. Thanks Tipp. We were really impressed with the tours of the simulation venues; I especially enjoyed the Afghanistan Immersion village. It had a very authentic feel, and, as you would expect, the Marine briefers were very “colorful.” The host hotel was outstanding and the hotel staff were very friendly and professional -- great stay! The wives also have bonded over the years as participants in this Marine Corps family. Thank you Marines for providing us this rare opportunity! We look forward to seeing you all in San Diego next year. Until then, Semper Fidelis!” -- Blessings, Shirley and Fred Jones

“Working with John Kopka on this reunion was a pleasure, and for that, John, I thank you. If I sent you one more email, or called you one more time, I was afraid you might ask me to resign my post!! (Just kidding!) You and Polly planned a great reunion. The proof was in the pudding!” -- As Ever, Carol

shrimp on Thursday and prime rib on Friday – Extraordinary. Not to mention, the banquet food was delicious and well served. Under the direction of our terrific secretary, Carol Jonic, the weekend was well orchestrated. Polly and her crew’s centerpieces were clearly exquisite. King Dixon was, as always, masterful in his tribute to the honorees. General McKissock’s presentation was warm and poignant. Saturday's Camp Lejeune visit was incomparable, from the firing ‘range’ to the simulated Afghan village. The emphasis on training our young Marines is truly impressive. Our tour was a real tribute to the respect our leader John has with the Lejeune community. Last, and undoubtedly the best part for me personally, was the attendance of Margie Carrington (widow of Bear Carrington); Marge Gresham (widow of Dick Gresham) with son, Kreg; Bea McInturff (widow of Dave McInturff) with son, Chris; and Ann and Roy Smalley with their daughter, Gloria. Their attendance really touched my soul. We all were honored by their being with us, and hope that they continue the tradition. God bless us all.” (Chapter 6 of the IRAM)! -- Ron (Tipp) Timpanaro

“A big thanks to John and Polly Kopka for a wonderful reunion. They, and the rest of the organizers, made this another memorable event. Special “shout out” to Carol Jonic for all the work she does. “Tipp”, the Hospitality Room was great as always. Those that could not come ------ you missed it!!” -- Marge Gresham

“This was a wonderful reunion. The food, hotel, even the weather, were amazing. Listening to the stories at every table, the banquet speakers (even our MC) were excellent. Gary especially enjoyed connecting with fellow Marines and sharing his stories and hearing new ones. The best part for me was the 50-caliber machine gun! What I can tell my grandkids!! Thank you for a wonderful experience!!” -- Gary and Betty Hier

“Again the plan came together for our reunion. The food was good. My French fries were a little soggy. John put a lot of effort in planning. Carol Jonic added a lot of class to the gathering. I am happy about the reunion but sad of the thought of our reunion fading with time. At our age people are dying but not forgotten. Let’s keep our reunion alive with the memories of all Marines. Looking forward to San Diego. If I am not there, start eating without me. I am a little concerned -- Mary scored 6 for 6 with the pistol!” -- Semper Fi, Ed Dear

“The tour of the simulations was informative and made us aware of the newest techniques. The instructors were especially good at simplifying the technology. The tour of the Beirut Memorial area including the Montford Marine Memorial and the Vietnam Memorial was surprising. It is well done, and our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Our hotel was especially comfortable. We appreciated our accommodations.” -- Ed and Mary Dear

More from Mike and Rachel Barrick: “We took a side trip to New Bern, time capsule of American History. Founded in 1710, it became the 1st capital of NC. In the Civil War’s Battle of New Bern it fell to the Union. There are many more things to do and see in New Bern, but they will have to wait until our next trip to Jacksonville!!”

“John and Polly raised the bar once again! The site selection was outstanding. The Hilton Garden Inn staff members were off-the-charts attentive in dealing with hospitality issues. And when was the last time you eschewed eating at a restaurant to eat at the reunion hotel? Steak and

“Kudos to John and Polly for a very well planned and executed 2018 Reunion. It’s been 52 years since I was at Camp Lejeune with 1st Bn 2d Mar preparing to deploy to GITMO. It was great to be back in NC. The tour of the Base and

the opportunity to have hands on experience with the very same combat training simulators, Humvees, trucks, and weapons that young Marines engage with every day was more than special. As always we all were able to embellish our own ‘combat tales’ told at prior reunions by gathering in the well-equipped Hospitality Room (thanks Ron!). The Banquet was made especially meaningful this year as King Dixon paid tribute to now 12 QMAs lost in Vietnam (thanks King!). Hope to see all hands, spouses, and guests in San Diego in 2019!” -- Semper Fidelis! George Jonic

“Thank you, John, for the ‘star wars’ program for our Marines – it was very interesting and most exciting. (Please keep in mind in the future that our knees can’t take standing for too long.) I still think our program could contain a sporting event as part of the agenda. It may even incite other people to attend.” -- Howard (Sonny) Langley

“I always love to see my friends at the reunions. Since Sonny and I hosted in Williamsburg, VA in 2010, I know how much planning goes into a successful event. I enjoyed Camp Lejeune and seeing what our Marines do. I was amazed. Hope we can continue to have these reunions.” -- Susan Langley

Shortly after the reunion, George and Carol Jonic received a very nice, hand-written note, in the US mail, from Jim and Elaine Dugan. Their sentiments about the reunion are shared with you here: “…It was so nice to see everyone again and honor those that died in Vietnam. We always need to remember the sacrifice they made. The Banquet, as well as everything we did, was terrific. Jim is enjoying reading the book about John A. Lejeune!” (Book was won by Elaine in the drawing at the banquet!)

KOPKA’S KORNER

“In addition to our fundamental purpose, that is, REMEMBERING the 12 Quantico Marine Athletes lost in Vietnam all those years ago, our goal for Reunion 2018 was to put together a relaxing few days to allow each of you to enjoy renewing friendships, choose what to see/visit in the Jacksonville area, and participate in a visit to Camp Lejeune’s simulators to give all of you a practical example of the type of training experienced by all Marines today. As President of the Quantico Marine Athletes of the Sixties, and host of this year’s reunion, I was pleased with everything except attendance, especially non-attendance by our members living in North

amazing…Ron and Carol are terrific organizers and did yeoman's work to ensure our success. Although this note is from both Polly and me, I must say a special thank you to Polly and her "gang" of ladies -- along with Kreg Gresham -- for the superb job they did creating the beautiful red-rose centerpieces and decorating the banquet tables. We look forward to the Reunion in San Diego in 2019, and encourage all our members to plan on attending.” – John and Polly

Carolina. Polly and I hope we accomplished all our goals. In addition, we hope you enjoyed the hospitality of the staff of the Hilton Garden Inn and the many area restaurants available to each of you including the onsite Mad Boar. Many thanks to our planners: Fred, Carol, Ron, Ed, and John. Their help with this Reunion was
