PROJECT STATEMENT

Our project aim is to reintroduce the cultivation of slate quarry-ing on Kerrera which will provide roofing tiles for Kerrera and be exported to Oban and distributed to the surrounding area.

Slate quarrying is usually associated with an in-vasive scale, however our aim is to introduce a more human and tactile experience to the process.

Our aim is to pursue an approach that overcomes the false separation between architecture and landscape. Thus the site and building strategy are one and the same.

We intent to create a landscape and buildings which share the same agenda and will allow them to perform as linked interactive sys-tems that heal the environment. Rather than opposing space and matter, architecture and landscape will be seen as an accumulation of independent processes which can be as complex as any machine.

We will consider the hierarchy of the process of quarrying: the refinement of the stone as it goes through the different stages to create an architectural language that expresses this.

Sustainability in adjectives:

anticipating active

We can think of designing ‘sustainably’ as designing strategically, responsibly and responsively in a way that is highly attuned to prevailing social, financial, and physical context .

-Excerpts from Handout 14, Lisa Moffitt

Social Sustainability Providing value to the community | Offering cultural value - A human axis.

Economic Sustainability An architecture worth having | Creating an economy from the land.

Environmental Sustaibility Waste Management for building. Refining the waste as means of cre-ating an experiential architecture.

READINGS ON WASTE AS ARCHITECTURE| 31

Topographical junction by waste:

“…recent changes to the topography [ of the slate islands]have been caused by slate quarrying itself, islands have been joined by waste tips….”

- Walsh, J . Scottish Slate Quarries pg. 27 Crown copyright Edinburgh 2000.

Published by Historic Scotland

Waste as raw material for construction

“At present the metabolism of urban areas is a linear system with resources coming in at one end and wastes being produced at the other. Increasing urban sustain-ability implies the transformation of many of these linear systems into circular systems whereby waste outputs provide the raw materials for resource inputs.”

- Rudlin and Falk, 1999. The Sustainable Urban Neighborhood Architectural Press
