Message from Our Vicar
God is here now and always: Rise up and walk
Dearly beloved in Christ,
Greetings in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
We as a worshipping community are entering into the second half of a year with an expecta-
tion and hope to get a relaxation in the lockdown due to COVID -19. Praising God for all
His grace and mercies, he has shown to us during this turmoil. The whole world is in a fro-
zen state because of this pandemic and in sorrow due to the sad demise of many of their
valuable citizens. Increasing rate of poverty, unemployment, affected and infected people
around the globe and the severity of the economical crisis, are the major issues which the
authorities need to take care of in the immediate future. Our places of worship are closed
until further notice due to this terrible pandemic. Over the past several weeks, we have seen
an impressive burst of creativity in worshipping God through online medias. The live
streaming, google meetings and zoom meetings creates a new world of openings for us.
Thank God for all our present technological possibilities to connect with our people in this
time of confusion and anxiety. By God’s grace, we have resumed our Sunday school
classes, Youth fellowship prayer meetings, Sevika Sanghom meetings, Yuvajana Sakhyam
meetings, Edavaka Mission fellowship, frontline workers prayer fellowship and Senior fel-
lowship meetings virtually during this time of pandemic. I appreciate all the efforts made
by the respective sub-organizations and the executive committee of the parish for their ini-
tiative to coordinate the activities. We have a good number of participations in all these
meetings and we have been gracefully managing this crisis through the amazing grace of
our Savior Jesus Christ. Our new team of Executive Committee took charge of their respec-
tive offices as of April 12th. We are thankful to the Executive Committee of the year 2019
for their valuable leadership and sincere service. I hope and pray that the new team may
lead the Church in an effective manner during this time of lockdown.
We were able to contribute $26500 to Markham Stouffville Hospital for PPE (cost of a ven-
tilator), at this time of pandemic which expresses our solidarity to the people who are at the
frontline, fighting this invisible enemy of humankind. This contribution was widely ac-
cepted and appreciated by many of the dignitaries in our community. The York region coun-
cil met and made a record of appreciation in their minutes. This is really an acceptance to
our community. Paul Calandra, the Honorable MPP, Rick Upton the Ward Councillor also
expressed their joy and appreciation to us. I am happy to express my thanks to all my be-
loved members who contributed generously to this noble cause. Apart from this, our youth
fellowship is on their way to making face shields to donate to the hospital and our Yuvajana
Sakhyam were able to donate head caps to different hospitals, designed and sewn by our
members.

Message from Our Vicar (Cont…)
QU AR TE RLY BU LLET I N
We are still in the midst of lockdown. The hopeful Resurrection, Ascension and feast of
Pentecost is over, but the ongoing uncertainty lies ahead of us. We are in a different life
situation, a profound disruption in our lives, our communities and Church. Grief has ac-
companied us, as we faced many losses, including the death of many of our friends and
relatives. We have even found difficulty to bid a farewell to them as our final rite. We are
facing many theological questions about the nature of serving the Holy Qurbana and
Where is God in the midst of suffering? We are sure that our technology cannot replace
our gatherings as a community to commemorate and celebrate the life of our saviour Jesus
Christ. We discovered the fragility of life as one invisible virus, which could bring the en-
tire world to a grinding halt in every aspect of life. We must ask questions to ourselves,
what have we learned about the mission of God? What is essential in our life? What are
the things we need to change in our life? We are now able to celebrate our time with our
families and find time to construct an altar in our home through family prayer and able to
connect with people who are disconnected for many years. We now have invited God in
our homes, to share in our grief and lamentations, in our joy and sorrow, in our longing
for the familiar, and in our fears and anxiety. God is here now and always. He is here in
our telephonic conversations, in acts of kindness and generosity, in compassion and car-
ing. God is here and whatever happens in the future, we know we are not alone. But Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have, I give you; in the name of Jesus
Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk.”(Acts.3:6) So whatever lies ahead in our choices
and decisions let us move forward as a faith strengthened people and tested through ad-
versity. Let us continue in prayer and meditating the living word of God. I request you all
to keep on praying for the frontline workers, first responders and essential workers. Please
join in the chain prayer organized by our Edavaka Mission.
May God bless us all and keep us all safe in His hands,
Your’s in His service,
Sunil Achen.

From the Secretary’s Desk
Greetings to you all in the matchless name of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. The year 2020 has been a challenge to all of us. Social distancing, lifestyle changes and regular hygiene practices have made us understand the value of our God gifted life. The rich & the poor are both in the mercy of our Lords hands. This is also an eye opener for us that the last and best creation of God need not have arrogance to be superior to any other creation. A small virus which cannot be even seen with our naked eyes have become the most fearing threat than anything man can ever imagine. The pandemic has also taught us that weddings can be organized without spending a fortune and funerals need not have a big crowd to show the social status of the deceased. Not everything needs to be seen in a negative way. COVID-19 pandemic also has a positive side. It has given us more time to spend with our families and keep a routine check on our loved ones. We have rejuvenated our family prayer time and have come more closer to God.. I thank and praise the Lord for giving me this opportunity to take up this challenging position as the Secretary of The Canadian Mar Thoma Church and would also like to THANK YOU all for believing in me and my capabilities of handling this post. Being the secretary has helped me to have an inside view of the day to day matters of our church activities and also be involved in the responsibilities of maintaining our beautiful church. We as a church were able to raise CAD$ 26,500/- to make a donation in support of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. Our support enabled the hospital to fund life-saving equipment such as ventilators for their Intensive Care Unit (ICU) & Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their staff & patients. Due to this pandemic situation we are not able to gather together physically but I am very happy to see that all our sub-organizations are doing their part to keep us close to each other as a community. Our Sunday school is doing an excellent job by organizing online Sunday school class every Sundays for all age groups. They have also done a wonderful job by organizing virtual VBS from June 26 – 28. I should say the teachers and parents have also done their part to make this event a success. Our Youth Fellowship has been organizing prayer meetings every Sunday at 5 pm. Yuvajana Sakhyam, Sevika Sangham & Senior Fellowship are all organizing prayer meetings once a month. I have to also appreciate our Youth Fellowship members for making face shields and also our Yuvajana Sakhyam members for making head caps and donating them to our hospitals and frontline workers. Our Edavaka Mission is doing a remarkable job by organizing our chain prayer and I also thank the people who have volunteered to be a part of this event. Our chain prayer started from the beginning of our pandemic situation and is still continuing till date.

A special thanks to all our Frontline & Essential Workers for their dedication & commitment to our community. I pray that God keeps all of them and their families’ safe during these pandemic times. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Sunil Achen for his timely guidance and also his dedication in conducting our weekly prayer meetings. His commitment and initiative in conducting the online Sunday service has also spiritually helped us keep our hopes and faith going. Last but not the least, I would like to thank our outgoing secretary, Sunita Alexander for doing a fabulous job during the year 2019 – 2020. Her systematic way of organizing things did make the continuation of my job easy. Thank you Lord for keeping us all safe. I humble myself and say that all this is done not on my merit but by HIS Grace… In His Service, Lijo Mathai [email protected] Secretary (647) 892-5456
