‘Southland Sixties Sensations’ Tuesdays at 12.30 noon

‘Invers-Originals’ with host, Jay Sellwood Thursdays at 8pm

‘Southern Story Tellers Corner’ Sundays at 9pm

The Southern Story Tellers

Group are purveyors of the au-

ral tradition of story telling as it

has come down through the ag-

es. Story telling is an art form

that is perfect for radio, images

are created in the mind by the

use of colorful and creative tales

and clever inflection of the tell-

ers voice. Members of the group

are absolutely passionate about

their craft. During their half

hour show, you can hear stories

from local authors and stories

created by the members them-

selves as well as tales from au-

thors visiting from overseas. It’s

well worth a listen.

Jay Sellwood has no illusions

about how tough it can be for

local talent to get their music

and name heard, that’s why he

started up his radio show

“InversOriginals” - to help

struggling artists promote their

music and to allow the public to

hear them. Jay’s enthusiastic

and lively broadcast style has

become legend amongst his lis-

tening audience; they tune in

weekly to hear well-known or

new Southland bands and art-

ists, showcase their own special

brand of music. Jay also likes to

provide interesting background

information about the artists

and their songs. InversOriginals

is 100% live and local.

With his hair almost matching the microphone padding! Jay get’s ready to

present “InversOriginals” to help support and promote local musicians

Introducing: SCBCT Board Member, Sean Woodward

“Country Express & Southern first play” with Noel Parry

In his professional legal career at

Preston Russell Law, Sean Wood-

ward has an extensive back-

ground in governance. As a com-

mercial lawyer, he understands

the importance of the employees,

the programme makers, and the

funders of an Access radio station.

Sean represents the Southland

Chamber of Commerce on the

trust board. Sean also under-

stands the requirements of an ac-

cess station’s 36c charter and the

unique community element it sup-

ports. Sean has a passion for

youth issues and has been in-

volved in ‘Polyfest’ and the Teen

Parenting Unit. He would like to

see more youth programming

broadcasting on 96.4FM in 2013.

Country presenter, Noel Parry in full country music regalia, during a

broadcast of the popular show Country Express, Wednesdays at 2.30pm.

Pictured: Trustee Sean Woodward visits Radio Southland to discuss his

involvement with the Southland Community Broadcasters Charitable

Trust Board.

“Country Express” on-air for near-

ly nine years is the second long-

est running show in Radio South-

land’s programme line-up. Noel

Parry’s other country show

“Southern first play” on Thurs-

days at 9.30am is a close runner

up. On Wednesday’s show Noel

plays traditional country music,

but on Thursday many of the art-

ists are having their songs played

for the first time— hence the

name! Noel receives emails from

the artists and his listeners from

the USA and other parts of the

world. He regularly posts on Face-

book and reads out the latest in

country club news with an in-

formative weekly noticeboard.

“Get Down to Earth”

South Coast Environment Centre

BBC World Service 12pm to 9am daily.

It’s a time of change—but change is

nothing to be afraid of. We farewell

Station Coordinator Deborah Smith

after 15 years of loyal service to Radio

Southland and she goes with our deep-

est gratitude for all she has done. Not

only has Deborah provided the wel-

come for our visitors, been the go-to

person for our programme makers, run

our office and been a programme con-

tributor; but she has also kept the sta-

tion going on many occasions, and

been an invaluable support to me since

I came on board as manager. From us

all—thank you Deborah, and all success

to you in the future.

There will be a new face in our office

from mid-November. I am delighted to

confirm Amanda Kennedy as our new

Station Coordinator. She comes with a

strong administrative background, par-

ticularly in recruitment, and is excited

to have the opportunity to join our staff

and volunteers.

While on the subject of our website,

many thanks to all who have contribut-

ed their piece to it. We enabled our

updated website on October 1st. It has

a cleaner look, more functionality,

great opportunities to access the live

Stream (on every page), podcasts in

alphabetical order (fancy), a groovy

welcome video, profiles on our pro-

gramme makers, a photo gallery, and

an opportunity for those visiting the

website to share items of interest on

various social media. Many thanks to

Mike Sanford of Invers.co.nz for his

work, supported by Kim and Deborah,

and to Joshua Dean from Jobit.co.nz for

his help in making it go live.

As always, we welcome our new pro-

gramme makers (some featured in this

edition), and congratulate those who

made the trip north to the ACAB Con-

ference in Dunedin just recently. The

strong Southland presence was appre-

ciated by our Otago cousins. Next year

the conference will be in Nelson.

It’s been a busy year with a real mix of

highs and lows—but we produce real

radio with passion, and each day I’m

grateful to have the opportunity to

work with you all. I have no doubt that

2013 will have its challenges, but I in-

tend to have fun and I invite you to as

well, and encourage others to come

and join us please.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Darren
