1. Project Initials: The main features of the project are as under:

Project Title Resilient Communities through Food Security, Strengthening of Rural

Infrastructure, Disaster Proof WASH Infrastructure and Formation of Disaster

Management Structures in Sindh, Pakistan.

Project Objective Food security in 40 villages frequently affected by flood and drought in Sindh

(Badin and Mirpurkhas) is enhanced through access, availability and

appropriate utilization of food and water as well as DRR activities.

1,772 families (2,688 men, 2,648 women and 4,636 children) from the 40

villages will benefit from all activities of the project. 190,028 people (53,312

men, 53,352 women and 81,364 children, 1,000 elderly people and 1,000

people with disabilities).

6. Access to drinking water, water for domestic use and to sanitation facilities

through the construction / development of resilient water supply systems and

2. Project Background: This project is being implementing in a consortium led by Plan International Germany with Arche

noVae (AR)- Initiative für Menschen in Not. Plan International Pakistan and AR have experience of

project implementation in Sindh; especially related to all the elements of food security such as

income generation, nutrition, agriculture and livestock value chain management, WASH, community-

based infrastructure, disaster risk reduction and preparedness.

The roles and responsibilities of the partners are as follows:

Plan International, Pakistan is responsible for project management, coordination and monitoring

activities conducted in cooperation with the partners (NRSP and three Local Support Organizations

(LSO). Furthermore, Plan International, Pakistan directly manages the advocacy and DRR

components of the project. Through National Rural Support Program (NRSP), agriculture and

livestock value chain activities in the domains of livelihoods, income generation, rural development

and community physical infrastructure, are implemented through engaging with the network of

three local support organisations (LSO) and village organisations (VO).

The Agriculture and Animal Farming Department in Sindh gives advice and will be involved in the

component which aims to increase the creation of value.

By using its structures in Sindh and Islamabad, arche noVa is leading the WASH (infrastructure and

awareness raising), CBDRM and DRR related interventions.

3.0 Target Areas:

Project is being implemented in 40 villages of district Badin and Mirpurkhas of Sindh province. These

40 villages are situated in Union Councils of Khaipur Gambo in Tehsil Tando Bago, district of Badin

and in Union Council of DilwarHussain & Roshanabad in Tehsil Jhuddo, district of MirpurKhas.

4.0 Progress towards Outputs/outcomes:

4.1. Improved household income and productivity through strengthening of

community value chain management and advocacy with the Government

4.1.1 Activity 1.1: Procurement of Livestock (Calves, Sheep/goat, poultry) for distribution among poorest women

During the reporting period following

activities were carried out:-

i. 12 Cattle Calves (Female) of local breed

were procured and distributed among 12

deprived and most vulnerable women.

Animal were also vaccinated against Foot

and Mouth disease.

ii. 39 goats were procured, vaccinated and

distributed among 13 selected women

beneficiaries. Each beneficiary was

provided a set of 2 female & 1 male

goats.

iii. 37 women beneficiaries Poultry birds will

be provided in next quarter.

During the reporting period, cumulatively 25

women received livestock identified through the Progress out of Poverty Index tool of the Grameen

Foundation (USA). About 12 households received cattle calves whereas 13 household received goats.

4.1.2 Train livestock owning family members on cross breeding, improved feeding and disease control:

i. Conducted cattle management training

(Posts level) of 17 women in the reporting

period for livestock owner. The project

team has also conducted 12 pre training

for those beneficiaries who received cattle

calves under the project.

ii. Sheep and goat management training was

conducted for beneficiaries who rece ived

sheep and goats through project. Thirteen

(13) women attended Pre training, while

52 women attended post training.

iii. Poultry management pre and post training

were conducted for 37 and 100 women

respectively.

Impact of livestock Trainings: As 2200, beneficiaries are trained on livestock and poultry management during the project life. The beneficiaries are now more aware of the local problems related to livestock and poultry. They are in a position to understand and manage small problems. Now the community informed that mortality rate of hens, cows, and goats reduced due to improved practices.

Impact of livestock training:

12 of the beneficiaries whom were provided with cows are now pregnant and a three of them have also their off springs. Such households have now pure milk available at their home for children and few of them started selling surplus milk to neighbours for increased income.

Beneficiaries who got goats are also benefitting with milk from goats and saving money that was previously being spent on buying milk from local market.

Beneficiaries who received hens from the project are now getting eggs from them; As a good source of protein, child nutrition has improved due to eggs availability at home. Some women are also selling eggs to earn their livelihood.

4.1.2.1 Product Management training (clean Milking) for livestock owing families with FSS and

WOS members:

NRSP technical staff delivered training on livestock management to the members of the Farmers

Field Schools (FFS) and Women Open School (WOS) in 3 villages (2 from MirpurKhas and 1 from

Badin district). A total of 207 farmer’s members from the livestock owing families attended the

training (87 male FFS members and 120 women WOS members). Main purpose of this training was

to promote awareness about clean milk handling practices. Training topics included aspects such as

milk hygiene, preservation and clean milk handling practices included cleaning of utensils for milk

storage. Among the total of 207 FFS & WOS members 150 members were trained in Mirpurkhas and

57 were trained in Badin district in this quarter. The cumulative total of 2203 persons trained in both

targeted districts.

4.1.2.2 Community level training in (i) livestock management, ii) Vaccination, iii) Livestock

Breed Improvement, iv) Feed & Fodder with FFS & WOS members.

NRSP team conducted trainings related to livestock management, vaccination, breed improvement,

feed and fodder for FSS and WOs members. A total 234 members (177 in MirpurKhas and 57 in

district Badin) were trained with the proportion of 88 men & 146women.

4.1.2.3 Community level training in i) Sheep goat management, ii) Vaccination, iii) Breeding, iv) Feed & Fodder with FFS & WOS Member

During this quarter, trainings on sheep and goat management were conducted for the members of

FFS and WOS in project districts. A total 234 livestock farmers including 88 men and 146 women in

with the share of 177 from MirpurKhas and 57 participants from Badin district were provided with

the training. Knowledge imparted through the training included aspects such as goat and sheep

management, vaccination calendar, preferable breeds

considering local environmental pattern and availability local

varieties of feed and fodder.

4.1.2.4 Community level training in i) Poultry management,

ii) Vaccination, iii) Breeding, iv) Feed & Fodder with FFS &

WOS Member

During the reporting period the project trained 237 men and

women with the proportion of 88 men members FSS and 149

women members of WOS from two districts (180 in

MirpurKhas and 57 in Badin) on poultry management,

breeding and feed and fodder. The training content included

poultry management aspects related to poultry birds vaccination, breeding and feeding. The

technical staff of NRSP delivered sessions as per developed module and training agenda.

4.1.3 A1.6 Community-based trainings on resilient cultivation methods, storage, organic fertilizers and new seeds

4.1.3.1 Community Level training of farmers on natural Bio Fertilizers Bio Pesticides and other pest control techniques in crop and vegetable Cultivation

Project team delivered community level training to farmers on natural fertilizers, bio- pesticides and

other pest control technique in crops and vegetable cultivation. About 240 community members

were trained (180 in MirpurKhas and 60 in Badin). Main purpose of these training were to train FSS

member to reduce their expenses on chemical fertilizers and pesticides and improve the economic

system of surrounding areas and promote biological (natural) control of pest.

4.1.3.2 Community level training of formers on improved seed varieties with FFS and WOS:

NRSP team during this quarter delivered training sessions on improved seed varieties to 210 (Female

150 & Male 60) FFS & WOS members. During this quarter 150 member from MirpurKhas and 60

from Badin district, participated in these trainings. The objective of this training was to improve seed

treatment, introduction of hybrids seeds; resistant varieties of crops and identification of pure seeds

this training will be trains to those FFS & WOS members for enhance their skill and knowledge.

4.1.4 Community level training of farmers on resilient cultivation practices

4.1.4.1 Community level trainings of farmers on “Resilient Cultivation Practices” (Flood & Drought) with FFS and WOS:

Trainings were organized for FFS and WOs member regarding resilient cultivation in this quarter the

total 270 (Female 150 and Male 120) FFS and WOS members are trained on resilient cultivation

practices. Out of total, 210 member from MirpurKhas and 60 from Badin participated in the training.

The main objective of training sessions was to orient the FFS and WOS members on resilient

cultivation practices in drought and flood situation. The training was designed to cope with the

threats of potential drought in their respective

areas.

4.1.4.3 Establishment of demonstration plots to promote drought and flood resilient seeds and crop cultivation practices:

This quarter, no demonstration plots were

established due to autumn. NRSP team will

resume establishment of demo plots in coming

quarter (April to June 2017)

Impact of demonstration plot:

In last quarter, NRSP supported communities in

establishment of 40 demonstration plots in

three different Union councils. Wheat was

cultivated in those plots. A new seed variety Sarjgen was introduced, which is especially developed

for flood and drought affected areas. The variety has more resistant that other seeds. The

production for this variety is almost double as compare to other seeds. The community members

have decided to store seeds and use this for next wheat seasons, due it its resistivity and production.

However, this year, there was less rain, still farmers got good production as they used improved

variety, suitable for their area and land.

4.1.4.4 Community level training of farmers on improved seed varieties with FFS and WOS:

During this quarter under this activity the project team trained 180 farmers on improved seeds

varieties. Among the total participants 90 were men and 90 were women members. The key

objective of this training was to improve the knowledge of FSS and WOS members on seed

treatment and resistant varieties of crop and identification of pure seeds.

4.1.5 Provision of agriculture related tools and implements at the community level for joint usage

The project procured and distributed 22 tool kits to established FFS. In this quarter 18 additional FFS

were formed and are now functional. Procurement process for approved toolkit has been initiated

by NRSP, which will be procured in coming quarter (April-Jun 2017).

4. 2. Enhanced income potential of young men and women through promoting

value chain related technical and vocational skills training (TVET)

4.2.1 Training for marginalized young women and men (including youth) on technical and vocational skills to work in agriculture and livestock farming:

4.2.1.2: Provide grant to train youth in animal artificial insemination techniques to purchase kit/equipment and working capital

NRSP team in consultation with Research and Technical Institution identified a set of equipment’s

for trainees to establish their own businesses. However, it was observed that each kit would cost

around PKR 30,000 (Gas container cost is 27,000). However, the allocated budget was around 19,000

per kit. In order to stay within budget limit, it was discussed to procure cylinder for LSO, which will

be provided to trainees upon request. Plan International suggested that all trainees should be

provided gas cylinder, as this is highly important for provision of improved services to communities.

The budget would be carefully reviewed, and look for any saving amount that can be used to cover

the additional cost. The plan and budget is still under discussion. NRSP will procure all items, when

budget discussions are finalized.

4.2.1.2 Provide grant to trained youth in veterinary services for basic vaccination services

An evaluation committee was formed, which has developed scoring criteria for all quotation

submitted by applicants. The committee reviewed, assessed and scored each proposal based on the

criteria. Provision of grants will start in coming quarter.

4.2.1.3 Provide grant to trained youth to purchase equipment’s and working capital to establish milk value addition enterprise

NRSP team distributed 100 (54 male & 46 female) tool kits to trained youth so that they can start

their milk value added enterprise. Out of these 100 beneficiaries, 47 were from Badin and 53 from

Mirpur Khas.

Impact of Nurseries: NRSP established 13 nurseries in the last 6 quarters. NRSP team is in with regular contact with the nursery owners. NRSP helped them to develop their linkages with the local market that proved to be much helpful for them. They are selling fruit orchard trees along with other plants; they have also increased their livelihood with the help of such nurseries.

4.2.1.5 Provision of materials/tools/seeds and counselling for the cultivation of home gardens (Trees): Under the Kitchen garden component, around 240 home based kitchen gardens were established in

project areas. Eight types of different vegetable seeds were provided along with kitchen gardening

tools. Following is the breakup of activity:-

4.2.1.6 Establishment of Fruit Orchards/Nurseries:

NRSP team supported communities in establishment of 13 nurseries. Gull Muhammand, a nursery owner has started selling plants in local market on every Monday. He is getting some additional amount form his new business.

4.2.1.7 Provision of fruit trees sapling and training on the establishment of fruit orchards:

During reporting quarter, NRSP distributed 500

sampling trees (28th March 2017) among

identified households belonging to 9 villages in

two project districts (225 in Mirpurkhas and 275

in Badin). The distributed trees (Mango, Berry,

and Lemon) were environmental friendly. In

addition to that, training sessions were

organized for same set of beneficiaries to aware

them on planting such trees to increase the fruit

orchards in project district and reduce the

possible losses in flood and drought situation.

4.2.2 Repair of irrigation channels in the villages -Cash-for-work infrastructure improvement schemes:

NRSP with the support from communities initiated 28 infrastructure schemes for improvement in

irrigation water channels. There are 19 schemes in MirpurKhas and 09 in Badin. Twenty four (25) of

these schemes have been completed 100% and rest of 3 schemes will be completed in next quarter

(April- June 2017).

To improve the livelihoods of the communities, NRSP started cash for work schemes in food security project in Mirpurkhas& Badin. Through these schemes, local farmers were given short-term employment for rehabilitation of their agriculture water channels. These people were given a daily

wage which allowed them to improve their livelihoods. The primary objective of cash transfers is to enable household to fulfil their daily food needs through increased savings.

4.2.3.2 Training on adequate nutrition for family members:

During this quarter under this activity the project team trained 150 community members on

adequate nutrition for family members. Among the total participant were trained with the

proportion of 60 men& 90 women.

4.2.3.4 Awareness rising on food handling, storage and preparation for the whole villages

During the reporting period training on awareness raising on food handling, storage and preparation

for the whole villages has been conducted. A total 149 members were trained with the proportion of

60 men and 89 women.

Impact of adequate nutrition:

NRSP conducted trainings on nutrition among the community members. Almost 2000 members have

been trained specially on the problems and complications of lactating women, pregnant and infant

children. Because of these trainings, now they are well aware of their diet and much conscious about

their health. NRSP considers this as one it’s great achievements.

4.2.3.5 Supplementary food for cases of malnutrition

In this quarter, NRSP provided supplementary food to 72 children in two project district (18 were

Mirpur Khas and 54 were Badin).Union Councils. The age group of this provision was 6-24 months,

identified by archi noVa. The objective of providing such food is to improve the health of these

children. NRSP and arch noNa are in continuous touch and making a frequent follow-up.

4.2.3.6 Development of referral system

NRSP and archi noVa are working jointly on referral system. In this system the SAM cases of the

children are identified and are referred to the concerned hospitals and BHU’s. During this period

NRSP with the coordination of Arch Nova referred 20 children to different BHU’s. Such children are

being properly treated there and are getting in time treatment and medicines. Both NRSP and arch

noVa are in continuous follow-up having a close coordination with the concerned DHQ’s and BHU’s.

3.0 Organization and training of community groups by LSOs:

Currently 14 farmer’s field schools are operational in both districts with over 587 men registered.

Similarly 14 Women Open Schools for 474 women are also operational in project districts. Stationery

items were provided to FFS and WOS. Agriculture officer conducted training on agriculture related

activities; each FFS and WOS attends a fortnightly class where they learned about the new seeds and

new technology (which included Practical on new cultivation machines advance seeds and fertilizer,

different procedures of irrigation). Beneficiaries also undertook practical exercises in demo plots

such as using farmyard manual, traditional techniques and nonconventional methods. They observe

key elements of the agro-ecosystem by measuring plant development, taking samples of insects,

weeds and diseased plants, and constructing simple cage experiments or comparing characteristics

of different soils. In addition to that, fourteen Child Ecological Clubs (CEC) with 365 children are

operational in project districts. CECs are involved in kitchen gardening, nurseries, plantation and

participation in various activities of DRR, Advocacy, Agriculture & WASH.

6. Monitoring and Evaluation Process:

M&E is one of the integral parts of the project. Regular field visits have been carried out and

activities are physically monitored. Data collection and analysis have been one of the focused areas

for M&E activities. The project progress is tracked by comparing with work plan and project key

indicators. All the data maintained and reported is gender and district wise disaggregated with

evidence available as backup in form of attendance sheets, short reports and pictures.

M&E Officer identified key strengths & weaknesses, provided support for timely implementation of

project activities. He document strengths& weakness of project ensured involvement of

stakeholders in each project activity

Situation before the

project activities

Pato, mother of 5 children comes from an extremely poor family. Her four

children are of school going age. Her eldest son had to abandon school as

they can’t afford to send him school and cover the expenses. Her son now

works in a Motorbike mechanic workshop and earns Rs. 50 each day as

daily wage labor. Pato’s husband also works as daily wage labor.

slack season,

they do not

have enough

money to meet

their expenses, as there was less work available in market. Pato herself also

work in agriculture farms in cotton picking and wheat harvesting seasons.

In NRSP PPI survey’s ranking, Pato’s household got score of 14 falling in

poorest criteria. Here household appraisal was done and based on set

criteria she was provided with one cow and 5 poultry birds. She was then

provided livestock management training to be able take care of animals in

an improved way. She followed training information and served her cow

with good food and hygiene at her home. The cow got pregnant and

delivered the first offspring in January 2017. The children are really excited

and welcome the baby cow warmly. They take good care of cow and her

baby. The family of Pato is now getting 3-4 litre of milk twice a day. The

milk is available for children and she use to sell 2 litre of milk to neighbours.

Patos children have now regular access to milk, and her assets have also

got increased due to cow and the offspring. She would continue to take

care of the animals.

Message to donors

Pato consider herself luck for being selected as one of the beneficiaries.

She is happy and shared that her family has new member, as her children

are excited for this new addition to their family. The children have access to

pure milk, and she feels more empowered as they have some tangible

assets at their home.
