During the fourth quarter (October-December) 1985, compared to the third

quarter of 1985:

' DOMESTIC PRODUCTION of certain stainless steel and alloy tool steel

products decreased 6 percent to 258,601 tons; declines occurred in stainless steel sheets and strip and plate.'.··

U.S. PRODUCERS' SHIPMENTS .. decreased 2 percent· to 275,721 tons.

- .. AVERAGE EMPLOYMENT pf production and related work~rs decreased 6 percent to 11,467 workers.

U.S. PRODUCERS' AND IMPORTERS' PRICES generally moved in opposite directions, with. producers' prices ~howing more increases ~nd importers' prices exhibiting more declines.

U.S. IMPORTERS' UNFILLED ORDERS decreased 7 percent to 37,532 tons.

U.S. IMPORTERS' INVENTORIES increased 9 percent to 22,010 tons.

U.S. production of certain stainless steel and alloy tool steel products

decreased, overall, from July-September 1985 to October-Decembet~l985. The

decline was accounted for by a drop in production of stainless steel sheets

and strip and pl~te during the period. The decrease in production of

' -stainless flat-rolled products follows a downward pattern that began in the

second quarter of 1985 and was accelerated by one specialty steel producer's . .., :

cessation of production of stainless steel sheets and strip in the fourth ' . . ; : ~: ; .

quarter of 1985. Production of stainless bar, wire rod, and alloy tool steel ... .·:

rose during the fourth quarter of 1985 compared to the third quarter, \ ...... :::

reversing a downward pattern established in the first quarter of 1985.

Stainless rod showed the greatest percentage increase, rebounding to the

level of output reached in the second quarter of the year. U.S. producers' J • • ~ ••• ~ :· • •

.... shipments followed the same trends as production, by product categories,

resulting in an overall decrease in shipments d1:1ring the period. Stainless

steel plate showed the greatest percentage decrease (13 percent), and ' : ; :~

stainless steel wire rod e><hibited the largest increase (39 perc~nt).

The average number of all· persons. employed in producing· certain stainless

steel and· alloy :tool steel decreased from 17 ,0·77 per~ons ·to 16,:·t70 persons, or

by 5 percent, from July-September 1995 to October-·December 1995; · .. '' '·:

Pricing data reported by U.S. importers for stainless steel and alloy

tool steel products revealed more price decreases than increases between July

1985 and December 1985; price decreases were generally less pronounced than

price increases. The movements continue the fluctuating pattern which has

characterized importers' prices during 1985. Noteworthy price decreases were

recorded in shipments of ~ * *

increases during the period.

Prices for * * * exhibited notable

U.S. importers' unfilled orders and inventories

Data on importers' unfilled orders from foreign sources indicate

increases in such orders for * ·>t * between September 30, 1985 dnd December 31,

1985. Importers' unfilled orders for*** decreased during the same period,

which is a reversal of the trend from the second quar·ter to the third

quarter. Importers' inventories of ***decreased between the two quarters,

while inventories of*** rose.
