Telling Time Speaking Activity Directions

Pre-Speaking Activity•Give each student a speaking cue card and an activity sheet.•Students should complete part A of the activity sheet using their cue cards. The times should be written out in words and include in “in the morning”, “in the afternoon” or “in the evening”.

Speaking Activity

•Divide the class into two groups. Group 1 will be asking what time it is first, while group 2 will answer.•Group 1 will not need to use their cue cards for the first portion of the activity and group 2 will not need their activity sheet (unless they want to read the times off of the activity sheet instead of thinking about how to say it using only their cue cards).•Have students form two lines facing each other. They will be speaking to whomever is directly across from them. If you have an odd number of students , that is okay, the students will be moving so one student will be waiting for a minute or so.•The students in group 1 should greet the students in group 2 and ask ¿Qué Hora Es?. The students in group 2 will answer depending on how they were greeted. Buenos días: they give the time next to the sun. Buenas tardes: they give the time next to the 12 depending on how they were greeted. Buenos días: they give the time next to the sun. Buenas tardes: they give the time next to the 12 and Buenas noches: they give the time next to the moon. Group 2 should also say “in the morning”, “in the afternoon” or “in the evening” in Spanish for practice purposes. •Group 1 will write down the time they hear on their activity sheet as a digital time (2:15 am etc.)•Group 1 will rotate one student to their left. The left most student should come around to the beginning of the line to speak with the left most student. •Group 1 should keep rotating until they have 5 times written for each time of day (15 rotations).•Group 1 and Group 2 switch roles and activity continues as stated above.

Sample Dialogue1: Buenas tardes, ¿Qué Hora Es?2: Buenas tardes, son las tres y veinte de la tarde.1: Gracias.2: De nada.
