President’s Report

Season 2014-15 proved to be another successful year for the Queanbeyan District Cricket

Club. All teams making all semi-finals (except for 4th grade narrowly missing the T20 semis)

a tremendous effort, 3 premierships for our mighty 3rd grade team and second in the Club

Championship albeit we will take a moral victory, indicates our club is in a healthy state.

In what was seen as a rebuilding year for our 1st grade, the young guys stepped up and

accepted every challenge thrown at them. Skipper Sammy Taylor did a mighty job leading the

boys to semi-finals in all 3 competitions and has started to build an excellent culture within

the group. We have quality young men right through our Club. We are a Club that is going in

the right direction, we are sustainable, competitive and a Club that enjoys our cricket whilst

creating an environment for our players to learn and improve. As an example of that, it was

great to see club newcomer Henry Hunt make his Futures League debut at the end of the

season and I’d like to think our club has played an important role in assisting Henry in

achieving his goals this season.

Well done also to our other skippers, Adrian Brunker (unlucky to lose all 3 grand finals),

Michael Frost, Matty Harding and Aaron Thorne for the way they lead their teams this season.

Our Freebody Oval cricket facility is one of the best in country Australia and we are very

proud to call it our home.

Our relationship with the Queanbeyan City Council continues to grow from strength to

strength. We have three excellent grounds in our city and it is our hope we can attract

representative carnivals and with that, visitors to our City in years to come. The Town Park

square was re-laid this season thanks to the support of John Barilaro (Member for Monaro)

and the Council. A sincere thank you Queanbeyan City Council staff for their ongoing

assistance.

I would like to acknowledge our curator Greg Dawes for the excellent job he has done on the

grounds now for a number of years. We’d love him to continue in the role however he says he

is moving on so if that is the case Dawesy our Club would like to thank you for your efforts.

The committees challenge now is to maintain and further improve our facilities to keep

Queanbeyan the best place to play cricket in the district.

Thank you to all of our sponsors this season. We could not function in the way we have now

for a number of years without your support. In particular I’d like to thank our major sponsors,

the Kangaroos Club. Thanks also to ARIS and Coates Hire for their support and to our

growing list of minor sponsors. I encourage everyone to get behind and support our sponsors

whenever possible.

I would like to acknowledge our Committee for the work that is done and meetings that are

attended for our club to run as smoothly as it does. Great job by Vice Presidents, Stephen

Cross and Rohan Ditton, Secretary Ron Bates, Treasurer Matty Harding, and our general

committee of Dave Corcoran, Adrian Brunker, Peter Jensen, Steve Grocott, Derren Gillespie,

Darren Southwell, Stephen Frost, Chris Howe and Sarah McGlashan.

Page 15

Our Club is also extremely fortunate to have the support of mums and dads, wives and

girlfriends around the pavilion. We would not be able to operate the way we do without your

support. There are too many to list but we can’t thank you enough.

This season was the first occasion we awarded the Mark Higgs Medal. Mark is arguably the

finest cricketer our club has produced and this award is an excellent recognition of Mark’s

career. The award was for the best first grade player in all formats for the season and was

voted on by two of our life members. Congratulations to our overseas player, Ed Barnard, for

winning the inaugural award.

This season we also introduced perpetual awards for batting and bowling through the grades,

which I believe is an excellent initiative. These have replaced individual trophies and will be

hung in our pavilion. The trophies have been named after prominent past and present

Queanbeyan players from that grade and it is great that most of them were at our presentation

night to present the awards for the first time.

Last but not least, a big thank you to my wife, Julie, for her support throughout the season at

the clubhouse and in my role as President of our Club.

Secretary’s Report

Well another season has come and gone and while we have not scaled the heady heights from

recent years, it was still a very successful season by any measure.

All teams made the semis of all competitions (with the exception of our Div 4 team who

narrowly missed out). Third grade had a stellar year with taking out the Triple Crown (Two-

day Premiers, One-day Cup winners and T20 Div 3 Cup winners) this was followed by 2nd

grade being the Triple Crown runners up (made the final of all 3 competitions). All this

contributed to the club just missing out on the Club Championship.

From an individual's perspective, there were great performances all round. 14 Centuries were

scored this season of which 10 players scored their maiden centuries for the club (Henry

Hunt, Jordan Hedington, Kel Evans, Michael Gilshenan, Phil Moore, Ed Barnard, Chris

Russo, Mark Solway, Jezza Macdonald and Micah Manners). We also had 7 players in the

nervous 90's as well.

With the ball Darren Southwell had a stellar season which included taking 5 wickets in an

innings twice as well as 10 wickets in a match. All up we had bowlers take 5 wickets in an

innings 16 times. Congrats also to Finley Hollyhead for his first Hat Trick for the club.

We were also well represented at the Association Awards with Peter Jensen being awarded

the Dene Moore Medal (4th grade player of the year) and Phil Moore winning the 3rd grade

batting award.

I would also acknowledge two players from our club, Vinesh Bennett (Australian Open

Team) and Wade Burrows (Australian U/18 Team) who were both part of the victorious

Australian Indoor Cricket teams which won their respective Indoor Cricket World Cups in

Wellington.

I would also like to congratulation the following players for achieving personal milestones

this season. I would like to add a special note that Sam Taylor passed 100 1st grade matches

as well.

Page 17

Thanks to the hard work of the committee and in particular Rohan Ditton and Matt Harding,

the club introduced a new playing strip which for the first time included training gear. It was

well received and certainly added another level of professionalism in the club.

This season also saw the club undertake a long overdue major refurbishment of the Town

Park wicket. This was made possible by a grant from NSW Government thanks to the work

of local member, John Barilaro, the efforts and support of the Queanbeyan council and finally

the generosity of the Junior Club committee to whom the grant was originally aimed at.

To this end, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support that is provided to the club

Queanbeyan Mayor, Tim Overall and from the staff of Queanbeyan City Council. It is great to

know that they are always ready to provide assistance whenever it was required.

In January, Freebody Park was chosen to be the venue for the Cricket World Cup tour and it

was a very successful day indeed. A lot of local children turned up to be part of the coaching

clinics that were run. We also managed to persuade a lot of former cricketers to again done

their whites for a T20 match.

The match was played between a Queanbeyan Invitational XI captained by Peter Solway and

an ACT Invitational XI, captained by Murray Radcliffe.

The match featured current and former Queanbeyan players – Steve Frost, Michael

Carruthers, Mark Steele, Tony Wynd, John Bull, Roger Cuscheri, Dom DiCampli, Michael

Kennedy, Simon Mann and Ian Black.

The ACT side had former stars like Greg Irvine, Paul Nemes, Ken McLeod, Evan Kellar,

Craig Henderson, Rob Regent, Michael Dawn, Graeme Bush, Steve Smith and Nick

McClintock.

Apart from all the players who participated, I would like to thank Bill Ruse and Derren

Gillespie for volunteering their time to officiate. Well done to all.

Page 18

During the year, the club was honoured to be chosen as the venue to commemorate the 200th

First grade match for both Bill Ruse and Terry Keel.

Bill and Terry and "The Cake"

Ratsny Gillespie did the club proud by baking a special 'cricket' cake for the day.

Off Field

The past season saw the club continuing to acknowledge the accomplishments of past and

present members by bestowing Life Membership on James Martin and Ron McGlashan at our

AGM.

I would like to congratulate Peta and Matt Harding on the birth of their first child, Finnegan

Thomas Harding.

I would also like to thank our "Ladies Auxiliary", particularly Julie Solway and Ratsny

Gillespie for the work they do around the club. I know that the 1st grade lads love the lunches

they put together for every home game.

I would also like to thank our scorers – Liam Baker and Peta Harding for doing a great job

throughout the season.

I would also like to acknowledge and to thank the work that firstly Josh Matic and then Steph

Kohler (Queanbeyan Age) did during the season. This effort ensures that the club is at the

forefront of sports news each week.

Also helping keep the club in the public domain, I would also like to thank Pete ‘Nook’

Newham for allowing me to present the Bluebags Review as part of his weekly sports show

on Queanbeyan 96.7 FM every Friday evening.

Page 19

The Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation Night was again a great night and

congratulations go to all the award recipients. I would like to again thank Josh "Chow-Dog"

Sands and Sam "Tubbsy" Taylor for the fantastic job they did as Master of Ceremonies.

It was great to see club stalwarts such as Mark Higgs, Col Berry, Phil Moon and Winston

McDonald in attendance on the night to present the new perpetual awards named in their

honour. It was also pleasing to see Tim Overall, John Gallop and his partner Judith Breen,

taking time out of their busy schedule to join us on the night.

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the organising committee of Rohan Ditton and

Michael Frost. Thanks to all involved.

The club’s Annual Golf Day was another success, with good numbers in attendance. However

we were a bit light on helpers on the day, which we need to address for next year's event.

On a sad note however, the cricket community was shocked with the passing of Phil Hughes

during the season. The club provided a fitting tribute to Phil and his family with all teams

having a minute's silence before the start of matches.

The Future

Thanks to efforts of people like Ian McNamee, the club's future looks good and as a result the

Queanbeyan City Council offered the club a 20 year license on the pavilion, which we have

duly accepted and have signed off on.

Thanks to the support of Tim Overall, the Council has agreed to rename Freebody 2 to The

Neil Bulger Oval, which is a long overdue tribute to "Legend". There will be an official

naming ceremony just prior to the start of the new season.

I also see a prosperous future for the club on the field with a number of youngsters in the

lower grades ready to take that next step on their path to first grade.

Treasurer’s Report

The 2014/15 season saw the club turn its financial performance around from last season’s

$1000 loss to a profit of almost $9000 profit for the season.

Revenues totalled approximately $117,000 which was an increase of $29,000 on last season.

The increase can be attributed to the release of the club’s new clothing, which resulted in an

increase of $18,000; an additional $6,000 in sponsorship came in courtesy of several new

sponsors committing to the club for the next three seasons; and an increase of $4,000 in

fundraising through social events and the operation of the pavilion fridge.

Expenses totalled approximately $108,000 which was an increase of $20,000 on last season

which was due to the increase in costs for our new clothing. Whilst the club was able to

reduce the following expenses - playing equipment, coaching, match hosting and social

functions - this was neutralised by increases of the following expenses – Cricket ACT

charges, administration expenses and curating costs.

Social functions for the club included our two major fundraising events during the season -

the Trivia Night in November and the annual Golf Day before Easter with both events being

well attended. An added event this season was the Homeground Cricket Tour held at

Freebody Oval in the lead up to the ICC World Cup, which also bought in some unsuspected

revenue. This event included activities for kids and culminated in a T20 game featuring the

ACT Old Boys vs Queanbeyan Old Boys which was broadcast live by QBN FM, and allowed

spectators to concurrently watch both that game and the live feed of the Australia vs England

ODI match.

The club's Balance Sheet at 31 May 2015 reflects a strong position with approximately

$63,000 in net assets, which will allow the management committee the opportunity to invest

further in playing and ground equipment for future seasons.

The club's major assets include the site screens and the new Ezi-cover with a combined

capitalised value of $13,900; clothing inventory of $8,800; and cash balances of

approximately $38,000.

Thanks go to:

Peter Solway for liaising with sponsors and securing match hosting income

Ron Bates for collecting monies from players and managing the procurement of

playing equipment

Stephen Cross for his continued assistance with sourcing fridge stock and manning the

bar for several social functions, after match drinks and match hosting events during

the year

Rohan Ditton for organising the clothing and the procurement of the Ezi-cover

All management committee members as well as the many others who have organised,

managed or assisted with the activities conducted by the club.

Lastly thanks to my wife Peta for providing assistance and allowing me the time needed to

fulfil my treasurer commitments.

Coaches Report

The 2014/15 season was a positive one for the Queanbeyan Cricket Club. Three titles were

won – Third grade were champions in the two-day, one-day and T20 competitions.

Premierships are very difficult to win and congratulations must be given to all players who

participated in these successful teams.

At the start of the year, we had three clear objectives.

Allow players to improve and take ownership of the club.

Inclusion across all grades.

Enjoy what we do.

Looking back on the year, I believe we achieved these during the majority of the season.

Players improved their games and the statistics displayed this. Third grade won premierships

and the other four sides dominated at times during the season. Our social functions and

celebrations were well supported. The way all members of our group got involved was a

credit to the club. It is always great watching people have fun and celebrate individual and

team success.

First grade had a positive year. Viewed as re-building year, new standards were created and

owned by the players. Their season may not have seen any titles being won however all

players who represented First grade this year achieved self-belief and a new expectation for

next season. Sam Taylor in his first year as Captain did a great job. His team was made up of

young, up and coming Queanbeyan players that saw the emergence of Henry Hunt and Ed

Barnard. Making the finals in all three formats and the grand final in T20 was a great

achievement.

Second grade had a year of “so close but so far”. They may not have won a premiership but

they produced performances that enabled individuals to push for higher honours. During the

season they dominated certain games and in others they unfortunately didn’t achieve their

usual high standards.

Adrian Brunker lead the side well and with his focus on “doing the simple things right”

forged the team into three grand finals. Each player who played in Second grade did so with

great enthusiasm. Some amazing milestones were achieved by players throughout the season,

which also adds to what was a season of missed opportunity but one that creates a hunger to

do better in 2015/16 season.

Third grade were well lead by Peter Solway. Their year was very successful, winning all three

premierships. Many players achieved great milestones this season. It is a credit to Peter for

being able to ensure that every week strong outcomes were achieved. Their performances

were outstanding. Congratulations to all Third grade players. It is important to highlight that

the players in Third grade should be looking to achieve higher honours next season. This will

strengthen our club from the top and down through the grades.

Fourth grade followed a similar path to Second grade…..a season that showed so much

potential only to have the opportunities missed. Lead by Matt Harding, Fourth grade reached

the semi-final of the two-day competition and the final of the one-day competition. The one-

day grand final saw the team in a dominant position, only to have the game called off and

replayed due to wet weather. The grand final was replayed the following week seeing Wests

Page 35: QUEANBEYAN DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC - QDCC Home Page · 2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT . Page 2 Table of Contents CLUB HISTORY 4 CLUB PERPETUAL AWARDS 6 2014-2015 MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE 8

Page 35

prevail. Like Third grade, players from this season must be looking for higher honours and

attendance to training is key to further the players’ aspirations.

Fifth grade - this team is just so consistent. Some fantastic club stalwarts and legends,

enjoying each other's company is what the game of cricket is about. This team is great starting

point for the young guys starting in grade cricket or wanting some experience while school

cricket takes a break. This season was on track until the grand final qualifier and to be fair this

result didn’t reflect what the season was about.

In regards to Queanbeyan individuals and higher honours:

Dean Solway and Henry Hunt played in the Comets futures league team.

Congratulations to both.

The future - the club is in great hands and with youthful and talented players coming through

the grades, Queanbeyan Cricket Club can expect success again next season. Our pre-season

and consistent availability is vital to ensure this success. First grade need to set team goals in

preference to a general outcome. Individuals can also benefit from goal setting.

Coaching the Queanbeyan Cricket Club has been an inspiring experience. As a coach you

don’t always get it right but it is a great feeling to know that you have the support of the club

when planning and executing your strategies. The support I have been given by all people at

the club has been outstanding. As I have said before, our facilities are first class and the

commitment of all involved is highly noteworthy. The Queanbeyan Cricket Club is a great

place to play and learn the game of cricket.

My thanks must go to the following people:

Assistant Coaches – Colin Crouch, Darren Southwell and Peter Solway. I would like to thank

you all for the terrific support and your work throughout the year. You all have insightful

knowledge and are very experienced cricket people. This provides a very positive impact on

the Queanbeyan playing group. Also, special thanks to Peter Solway who also played a key

role ensuring this group were heading in the right direction

Captains: First grade – Sam Taylor, Second grade – Adrian Brunker, Third grade - Peter

Solway, Fourth grade - Matt Harding, Fifth grade - Aaron Thorn.

Ron Bates for his total professionalism and attention to detail that is the envy of Canberra

Cricket.

Team Selectors: Adrian Brunker (Chairman of Selectors), Sam Taylor, Peter Solway, Matt

Harding and Michael Frost.

Finally to the family and friends who support us every week.

It was dubbed the rebuild/struggle season for Queanbeyan First Grade side, a mass exodus of

the clubs created “superstars” had taken place during the off season. The team that was going

to be assembled was only going to be a bunch of young blokes learning the game, and would

struggle to match it with the big boys of the grade Competition.

T20 was where this young team was most expected to fall over. However it was the first final

series the boys would play, a highlight being blowing Western Creek off the park in the Semi

Final. Special mention going to Lakshmn Shivakkumar who produced the innings of his short

career and one of the best innings seen in the ACT in recent times. Unfortunately First Grade

were beaten in the Semi- Final by Norths, but it lit the flame of belief and screamed out to the

rest of the competition that this young team was no push over.

One Day Cricket then was the next focus for the team and again the boys were more than up

to standard. Ed Barnard the overseas player brought in lead from the front, especially with the

ball, always managing to jag a wicket when needed or piling on the pressure for the break to

come shortly from the other end. Unfortunately for the boys disappointment was met in the

Semi Final, failing to chase down West-UC’s total on a very unpredictable pitch batting

second.

Two Day Cricket was the final challenge for the boys to tackle. After not scoring under 300 in

all two day games and the team celebrating Mark Solway’s maiden Queanbeyan First Grade

100, the underdogs had turned into slight competition favourites. But a hard loss to Eastlake

the game before the finals, losing Eddie Barnard to rep commitments back home and a slight

lack of experience, proved too much and First Grade sadly ended up going down to Wests

again in the Semi Final. An under serving end to what was all in all a fantastic year for not

only first grade but as a collective club.

2014/15 was easily the most enjoyable season to date at the club. A special mention to all

volunteers, Greg Dawes with the pitch, Ratsny and Julie in the kitchen, Liam Baker for

scoring, Ron Bates for the ridiculous hours he puts in behind the scenes, all committee

members and general supporters of the club First Grade thanks you immensely.

Looking ahead to the 2015/16 season it looks incredibly positive, with the fire in the belly

from defeat of last year, an incredible crop of young talent at the club to pick from and a wide

range of experience and brains trust at the club, Queanbeyan is destined to bring in a truck

load of silverware in my opinion

Can’t wait and looking forward to seeing you all a pre-season to get stuck in and BLEED

BLUE!!

Second Grade Report Runners Up – Campbell Cup, One-day Cup, T20-Div2

QDCC 2nd Grade enjoyed another successful yet frustrating season making the grand finals

of all 3 formats yet failing to lift any trophies. It's fair to say the side played their grand finals

in the semis of both the T20 and 2 Day Comp with very strong performances beating the

higher ranked opponents in Wests and Creek. The one day final saw the bluebags almost pull

off a miracle in the field defending a well under par score and at one stage when play was

halted due to weather were in front on Duckworth Lewis. From a captains perspective it was

clear we were the second best team for the second consecutive year but our continued

development of our younger players will bear fruit very soon and I expect the group will be

lifting trophies next season.

Many thanks to Darren Southwell and Vinesh Bennett over the course of the season for their

help on and off the field. Special mentions go to Vish Thakur and Yadwinder Prince for

outstanding seasons leading the batting and bowling respectively. They were great additions

to our squad this season and performed consistently right through the season.

A major highlight was Darren Southwell taking a phenomenal 9 for 21 against Ginninderra,

something he isn't going to let us forget any time soon! Other outstanding performances came

from Jeremy Macdonald scoring his maiden grade 100, Kel Evans and Vish Thakur 100's in

the 2 day Semi. Yadwinder Prince also took a 6 ‘fa’ against Tuggeranong and numerous bags

of 3 and 4 ‘fa’s’. Other performers of note were Ben Izzard. In his limited appearances, Ben

bowled great spells of leg spin well beyond his years of experience and will be looking for a

first grade spot before long. Nathan Corby was a tremendous addition this season often

bowling very long spells and taking plenty of wickets.

It has been a pleasure to skipper the side over the last couple of seasons and watch the growth

and development of our younger guys. The club is moving to a point where we will be the

benchmark right through the grades with our blends of youth matched with experience

creating the perfect environment not only to produce top cricketers but lift trophies as well.

I would also like to thank Dawesy for his excellent pitches and outfields. We are lucky to

have the best grounds and facilities in the region bar none and it's a credit to the club that we

can say that.

3rd Grade had a fantastic and memorable 2014-15 season. To go through unbeaten for the

entire season and win three premierships was a wonderful achievement. A big pat on the back

to everyone who played 3rd grade this season in any of the formats!

More importantly I believe however, was the improvement we have seen in a number of our

younger players during the year. Tyler Van Luin, Jay Ludwig, George Cross, Phil Moore,

Mick Elliott, Wilson Morshead, Finley Hollyhead along with a host of others showed

excellent improvement. Jordan Brown, Beau Watts and Jacob Knowles were again ever

reliable as was young quick, Jordan Lees.

In 3rds this year I think everyone who played had a really good opportunity to improve their

cricketing skills and just as important, enjoy their season of cricket. The team spirit was

excellent throughout and everyone enjoyed the company and successes of others.

The mix of youth and experience was spot on this year and went a long way to the year we

had. The old blokes chipped in and did their bit when required and I thought it was a good

indication of how far we had come that Frosty and I weren’t required to strap the pads on in

either the semi-final or final of the 2-day competition.

A big thank you to David “Horse” Horsfall, Michael and Stephen Frost and Simon Mann for

their support throughout the year. Frosty did a great job skippering the T20 side and played a

memorable knock in the final. Horse was a great help throughout the season and is a truly

fantastic clubman.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the fine performances by Mick Elliott and Phil

of just over 200 without losing a wicket to score an emphatic victory for the team. Mick went

on to make a century and Phil capped off a fine year with 90 odd not out.

I’ll just leave you with probably my fondest memory from the season in 3rd

grade.

We were lucky to gain the services of a young 15 year old wicket keeper from Bega this

season who drove up and back each weekend. Young Kel Evans played the first half of the

season in the 1’s and batted 11 and wasn’t required too many times. He played some rep

cricket after Christmas and after a chat to his rep coach and his Dad the decision was made to

get Kel back to 3rds to give him an opportunity with the bat. In his first match in 3rd's, Kel

batted at number 4 or 5 in the first innings and unfortunately he played one on and got a duck

after a couple of balls. I’m sure it was a quite trip home to the coast.

The following week we knocked Ginninderra over for a second time and we needed 45 runs

off 8 overs for an outright win. Kel opened the batting with another 15 year old in Wade

Burrows.

By this time all of 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade and 5th grade were watching the concluding

overs on Freebody 2. Kel proceeded to smash the opening bowlers to all parts and made 37

off 18 including a wonderful straight six to get the team within touching distance of an

outright win with not too many balls to spare. He got massive applause from everyone as he

walked in and he modestly raised his bat, but deep down he would have been beating his chest

in the knowledge that he now belonged. He then went on to make 90 odd in the next 3rd grade

game and 120 not out in the 2nd grade semi-final.

Great stuff!!!

Fourth Grade Report One-day Cup Runner’s Up

Back Row: P Jensen, S Johnson, G Alexander, W Graham, M Gilshenen, S Girish, B Forbes

Front Row: C Howe, M Harding (capt), S Cross, W Morshead, F Hollyhead

The 2014/15 season was a good season for Fourth Grade even though we were unable to bring

home any silverware. As team, we had some exceptional performances throughout the season,

not least of which was having four players score 350+ runs for the season: Peter Jensen

(543), Michael Gilshenan (517), Stephen Cross (411) and Matt Harding (368). Mick Elliott

(318) wasn’t too far off the mark, and young Sid Girish (290) finished just short of 300 runs

in his debut season. Brad Moore did well behind the stumps again and contributed with the

bat scoring 170 runs for the season.

Our bowlers also performed with Peter Jensen (42 wickets) and Will Graham (31) the

standouts, but they had very good support from Michael Gilshenan (18), Simon Johnson (17),

Finley Hollyhead (12), Graeme Alexander (12), Colin Crouch (11) and Sid Girish (9).

T20 Competition

We completed this competition with three wins and a loss from our four matches and missed

out on the semis due to Net Run Rate even after defeating eventual champions Norths in the

last pool match. Standout performances were Peter Jensen 5/18 vs ANU and Matt Harding 66

vs Eastlake

One Day Competition We completed the round matches of this competition with six wins and a washout from our

seven matches to finish in first place on the table. Unfortunately we ended up losing the

replayed final to defending champions Wests UC.

We had an excellent run in the regular season with highlights being

defeating Northies with 1 bonus point in the first round

bowling Ginninderra out for 166 (we were defending 176) after they were 1/95

Stand outs performances were Peter Jensen 73 vs ANU and 52no vs Eastlake; Matt Harding

94no vs Tuggeranong

Page 46

Two Day Competition

We completed the round matches of this competition with four wins, two draws and a loss

from our seven matches to finish in third place on the table. Unfortunately we ended up

drawing the semi-final with eventual winners ANU.

We should have finished higher on the table except we were unable to take the final wicket

against Western Creek who hung on for a draw and match with Ginninderra we had 2 wickets

to take when play ended – we lost an hour's play in the first week due to rain. Our only loss

was to Norths during the Saturday/Sunday round before Christmas. Highlights of the season

were:

Watching the youngest players in the team Jordan Hedington and Sid Girish putting on

a 148 run partnership for the third wicket against Weston Creek: Jordan scored 133 –

his timing and placement was fantastic to watch. Rohan Ditton had a cameo, scoring a

quick fire 55no

Sid scoring his maiden fifty for the club against Eastlake in the last round match

Stand outs: Graeme Alexander 54 and Peter Jensen 6/23 vs Wests; Peter Jensen 6/76 and 52

vs Norths; Jordan Hedington 133 and Rohan Ditton 55no vs Western Creek; Mick Elliott 51

and Peter Jensen 80 vs Ginninderra; Sid Girish 64 vs Eastlake

Semi-final

The season ended at the Semi Final for this competition however could have been a different

outcome had we taken the several chances provided to us on the first day. ANU batted for 4

sessions (144 overs) setting us a target of 352 from 62 overs to go through to the final (5.7

runs per over).

Steve Cross (52) and Sid Girish (33) had a good opening stand of 86 with us being 2/109 at

tea (31 overs – 3.52 runs/over) with the equation now being 243 runs from 31 overs (7.8 runs

per over). We lost a couple of quick wickets before Michael Gilshenan’s quick fire 114 (some

big 6’s were hit at ANU North) and Graeme Alexander (33no) added 109 for the 6th wicket.

We ended the day at 8/300 from the 62 overs (4.8 runs per over) available giving ANU a

mighty scare along the way.

A big thanks to Crossy for assisting with ground set up for all our home matches, bringing an

esky with drinks for the away matches.

I also need to thank the efforts of Adrian Brunker and Michael Frost with the selections each

week to ensure we had players in all grades, Greg Dawes for the preparation of Freebody 2

and all the other players who played in fourth grade this season before moving up the grades

or filling in when required.

And last but not least a really big thanks to the other player’s WAGS for coming along and

supporting us each week. Although I suspect the presence of my infant son Finnegan may

have been the actual reason for you being there, I know I and the other players appreciated

your support. I must also make special mention to the efforts of my wife Peta who in addition

to caring for our son, managed to score and keep the fourth grade ‘crèche’ in order

Fifth Grade Report Minor-Premiers

Fifth grade had again a very dominant season and we finished the home and away season as

the minor premiers for the 2nd year in a row. The team was strong in all facets of the game

throughout the season performing consistently week in week out.

We started the season strongly winning five games in a row and by the season break we had

only two losses and a rain affected draw. We then started the second half of the season with

six straight wins. We then had a big win in the qualifying final to book our place in the semis.

Unfortunately we then put in what was probably our worst performance and lost our Semi

Final against a strong North Canberra Golden Eagles side.

It was an exciting year for our side. Personally it was my first season as captain and our first

season in a long time without the legendary Peter Jensen. Many tipped a slight fall in

performance due to the big loss of Jenno. But I was proud of the way we all performed as a

team, nobody relied on another person to get the runs or take the wickets. Everyone chipped

in each week which made my job easier and at the same time harder when it came to

selections at the business end of the season.

This season we had a few new faces due to losing a few young guys and Jenno. We were very

lucky to pick up Mal Towney during the season, he provided us with an x-factor with the bat

and the ball, hitting a few quick half centuries. We were also fortunate to have Graeme

Alexander for the majority of the year, he provided great advice and experience to our side

and a few of the younger bowlers we had in the team at various stages of the season.

And to the younger guys, Tommy Christou (who played the whole season) plus Mitch Fern

and Ollie Hall (who filled in when we were short) were all fantastic in the field. By the

season's end Tommy was coming into his own with his batting and Ollie' bowling was

improving with every game. They brought much needed younger legs to an ageing team.

The seasoned regulars were fantastic also with Jimmy, Ferny, Troy Drayton, Ronny and

Yippa all amongst the wickets this season, racking up fantastic stats.

We had our ups and downs with the bat but we took advantage of some ordinary bowling and

fought hard against quality bowling. Again everyone contributed throughout the season. Most

notably Micah Manners. Micah’s season was a good one, he was great in the field matching it

with the young fellas, his bowling and his contributions with the bat that included 94 and 105

(Micah’s first century).

A special mention for Jimmy Martin, his bowling was fantastic all season, he always bowled

and batted when and wherever I asked him to without complaint. He was always happy to

provide advice and do what was best for the team. And during the course of the season he

became the clubs leading wicket taker, a fantastic effort from a club legend.

I would also like to mention the ultimate team man Bipin, he ran from one end of the field to

the other each over, each week. He also batted in just about every position during the season

and bowled when called upon without complaint. He came early to set up and left later to tidy

up.

Notable achievements –

Jim Martin 548 wickets (Club Record)

Ronny McGlashan 300 games

John Fern 200 games and 300 wickets

Aaron Thorn 150 games

Troy Drayton 100 Games

Chris Howe 100 Dismissals

Micah Manners 105 first century

Over all I think it was a successful season, unfortunately we were unable to replicate the

previous 4 seasons in making the Grand Final. I’d like to thank our experienced guys in

Jimmy, Ferny, Ronny and especially Chris Howe for assisting me throughout the season with

advice for bowlers and fielding changes. It was an enjoyable season and a big learning curve

for me also. I hope everyone returns for another season and we continue to improve and go

one better in Season 2015/16.

Cheers
