QAC MG Annual Plant Sale! May 11, 8:30-11:30 am, QAC Extension Office
The plant sale is our largest group volunteer activity of the year! It is the only event that raises funds to help offset the cost of our educational programs and activities. Please sign up, donate plants, green ele-phant items, consider baking, or join us in preparation for the sale. There are many volunteer opportunities the morning of the plant sale; please go to signup.com and add your name to a job. We have started hundreds of vegetable and flower plants in the greenhouse. We will sell them for $1 each! We are growing the to-mato varieties that were selected as the “winners” at the 2018 Tomato Tasting Event in Chestertown along with a few other fa-vorites. What a great opportunity to start a garden with thriving plants at a low cost. Tell all your friends and neighbors. Get the word out!
The morning of the Plant Sale is a time for gathering together with the community to share our knowledge and experience with gardens, natives, vegetables, Bay-Wise, pol-linators, IPM and more. The Plant Clinic “Ask a Master Gardener” booth will be set up with volunteers ready to answer ques-tions.
Thank you to all our MG’s who grow, divide, pot and bring plants to the sale every year. Your donations showcase some of the na-tive varieties that MG’s love to promote in
home gardens. Louise Shearer continues to provide her help in creating the won-derful plant labels. Please send infor-mation for specific labels to Lee or Louise ([email protected] or [email protected]) as soon as you can. We will be putting together packets of labels April 4th at 10:00 at the extension office. Please come and join us. Cleaning out your garden shed? Do you have pots, tools, seeds, garden gnomes? Gardening books that are gathering dust? The plant sale is the perfect opportunity to donate your items. The “Green Ele-phant” table will be back under the direc-tion of Sue Goward. All donations are welcome. Please drop off your items at the extension office or bring them with you the morning of the sale.
Bake Sale: The Bee and Flower cookies will be back along with biscotti. Can you bake? Please contact Sharlotte Beecher to help out: [email protected], 443-480-8333.
Plant donations can be dropped off any-time on Friday May 10th. If you plan to bring plants the morning of the event, or need to drop them off earlier in the week, please call Rachel (She will be back in May) or Lee to make arrangements.
We are counting on everyone to make this a success year after year!

Recording MG Hours-The New System
In early January the State MG Program launched our new MG Volunteer Manage-ment System (VMS) replacing the Online Tracking System (OTS) for recording volun-teer hours. For more information on record-ing and reporting volunteer data go to: http://extension.umd.edu/mg/program-management/tracking-volunteer-hours Once you become familiar with the functions of the new system, we hope that you will find the experience to be much more user friendly and offer new opportunities to re-
port and view your volunteer records. 2019 BAY-WISE MEETINGS Submitted by: MG Debbie Pusey

The Bay-Wise Committee met on Tuesday, March 19th. Topics of discussion includ-ed information for the Bay-Wise folders, articles for seasonal press releases and the KI Library Seed Swap. Thank you to Cathy Tengwall and Barbara Graham for handling the Bay-Wise exhibit there; 14 people signed up for Bay-Wise visits! Cathy, Margaret and Debbie will divide these up for contacting. In addition, Joyce Anderson will be the lead for any requests for Symphony Village.
Our first Bay-Wise visit of the season is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26th. We are in the process of organizing and contacting the list of homeowners who have al-ready signed up.
There were several people at the Seed Swap who expressed interest in rain gar-dens. We will look into developing a list of online resources including rain garden information to be added to the Bay-Wise folder given to homeowners. We also hope to have a press release article on rain gardens this spring.
One of our goals this year is to certify as many MG’s as possible. We will have a sign-up sheet at our regular monthly meetings for anyone who is interested. We would like to be able to do 2 to 3 a month. Again, this is not a beauty contest for your yard and we don’t care about how many weeds you have!
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 21st at 1:30pm at the Extension office. All are welcome to attend.

DEMONSTRATION GARDEN UPDATE Submitted by: MG Debbie Pusey
Our first workday for the Centreville Library rain garden will be Thursday, April 18th, starting at 9:00am.
We usually work for 1 – 1 ½ hours – that’s our limit!
As of this writing, the rain garden looks pretty good. Heavy rains on Thursday, March 21st left the rain garden almost completely full of water. However, by Saturday, the garden was completely drained. Although the overflow pipe is again blocked by stones from the center path, the garden is still functioning as planned. By the time we have our first workday, we should see some good signs of growth
and recovery from winter.

This is the perfect time of year to start thinking about all those seed catalogs. As most of us have cabin fever and are eager to get out in the garden, it seemed like a great idea to have the topic for the March plant clinic about “Starting from Seed.”
We had a display board featuring a “how-to” and “step-by-step” process for starting those seedlings with plenty of handouts and seed packets to give away. Deane brought a “soil block” maker which got some attention. This is an ingenious little device that com-presses the growing medium to form blocks that hold their shape, then you can start the seed in them and then transplant when ready. We gave out flyers about the upcoming Seed Swap at the Kent Island Library and Karen Wim-satt was with us to encourage those who stopped by to attend the seed

swap. In addition, we had the usual “Monthly Gardening Tips.” About 20 peo-ple stopped by to check out the display and chat with the master gardeners about starting gardens. Thanks also to the other MGs who helped out, Barbara Graham, Jackie Kelly, and Debbie Longhurst, and Carol Romano.
The next plant clinic will be Thursday, April 11, and in keeping with the upcom-ing growing season, we’ll have a “Grow It, Eat It” theme. Come join us if you can in April – it’s a great way to get those MG volunteer hours!
Liz Hammond [email protected] Deane Horowitz [email protected] We’ll be at Christ Church, Stevensville, 830 Romancoke Rd. Upcoming Plant Clinic Dates, 3:30-6:30pm April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, October 10, November 14, December 12. To sign up for a particular day email Liz, come to an MG meeting or click on this link: http://signup.com/go/SyMwafK
Vegetables Plant a late crop of basil, cilantro,
and dill. Plant a last crop of snap beans the
first week of August. Plant cool season crops, including
spinach, lettuce, carrots, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, Chinese cab-bage, turnips, kale and mustard. Keep seedlings moist and mulched.
Order garlic, walking onions, and shallots for fall planting.
Harvest leaves of herbs before they flower. Pick individually and dry indoors, or hang the stems in a dry, semi-shady room. Store dry leaves in air-tight jars. Fresh basil leaves freeze well in plastic bags that can be sealed.
Keep weeding and watering.
Lawn In dry periods grasses go dormant
but recover when rain returns. Newly seeded or sodded lawns may actually be dead and will need to be reseeded.
Mid-August through mid-October is the best time to start new lawns and renovate or overseed existing lawns. We recommend a turf-type tall fescue cultivar at a rate of 4 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sq. ft. of area for overseeding, or 8 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. for new lawns.

Garden Program at Kent County Middle School Just like last year, we will be providing a pro-gram at Kent County Middle Schools on a number of Thursday mornings. We did this last year as well and it was pretty successful. The main idea is that we work in the garden, try to grow food and prepare/cook food as well. We will have about 20 students from grades 6-8. We meet every three weeks Time: 7:30-9:00am!!!!
Last year the students made a salad, sweet potato pancakes and tortillas from scratch; we dissected flowers and started seeds indoors; we made insect hotels and did a lot of work in the gar-den.
The dates are as follows: 3/21, 4/11, 5/2, 5/23
Please contact Sabine Harvey if you would be interested in helping out with one or more of these sessions. [email protected], 410-778-1661
