Rev. Martin T. Marren, Pastor Rev. Kevin Mullins, O.S.A., Weekend Associate Robert Landuyt, Permanent Deacon
QUEEN OF MARTYRS CHURCH Evergreen Park, Illinois
Fr. Marty’s Musings God’s message to Isaiah in today’s first reading instructs us, “Observe what is right, do what is just.” The Message trans-lation renders the same passage as “Do what is right and do it in the right way.” We are challenged in our faith to do the right thing. We have been slammed with the issues of unequal justice, inequitable opportunities based on race, and an unbalanced economy while dealing with a world-wide pandemic. Let us do the right thing and do it for each other. Yesterday was the 75th anniversary of VJ Day and the end of World War II. Let us learn from the Greatest Genera-tion that we can counter evil and overcome great obstacles. Together, we can face the challenges of the moment with sacrifice and a spirit of community. Let us make great strides towards justice and healing. The Isaiah passage concludes with God’s command, “My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” Let us strive to be a more welcoming people and pray that human hearts might become stronger in love.
The other readings echo the generous invitation from God. The Church, through the witness of Paul, apostle to the Gentiles, blew up the definition of a chosen people. Christ’s expanding mission and the wise Canaanite woman counter those who prejudge those who differ as “other.” The Gospel presents both a test and a teaching moment. The woman recognized the true power of Jesus as Lord and Christ answers her faith with healing love.
Welcome back to the students, faculty, and staff for the new school year. We have extra hurdles to deal with as we teach and learn, but we have implemented protocols to protect health and safety of students and staff after a five-month gap. Welcome to Doc Mathius, our new principal, and the new faculty and students. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!

With the pandemic, our sacramental celebrations fol-lowed a different path than planned at the beginning of the last school year. In the past few weeks, we had two First Holy Communion Masses and two celebrations of the Rite of Confirmation. Social distancing required that we split the groups. The Bishops of the Archdiocese were not able to handle all the rescheduled Confirmation celebrations, so Cardinal Cupich granted the faculty to the pastors and administrators of the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In a letter from Bishop Ron Hick (now bishop of Joliet), the delegated faculty was granted in accord with Canons 884 and 885.2:
To administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to the members of the parish’s current confirmation class in as many ceremonies as may be needed. This extraordinary faculty to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation will lapse on December 31, 2020 unless extended by competent authority. (Canon 142.1).
Outside of RCIA at the Easter Vigil, these two evenings were my first experience as a minister of Confirmation. Please keep the newly confirmed and the First Communi-cants in your prayers that they will continue to grow in faith.
Fr. Marty Marren

“What will become of us? Whatever God wills! We are in God’s hands. God is our support, our hope in the midst of doubts, anxieties, fears, and all the inner sufferings we endure.” (Blessed John Martin Moye) The mother in today’s gospel first demands that Jesus heal her daughter. When Jesus ignores her, she then humbles herself and prays at Jesus’ feet. We need to remember that we are here to serve the Lord not make demands of him.
