THE FABRIC

Attention has naturally been concentrated on the New Building, but there are one or two other important matters to report.

The heating system for the New Building is to be serviced by an oil boiler located in the basement of Dokett Building, and pipes are now installed under Friars for that purpose. At the same time, the heating system throughout the old part of the College is being re-planned. Ultimately two boilers will be required, giving a reserve for all requirements that can be foreseen at present.

The roof of the gardener's shed and apple store was fonnd to he in bad condition and has been completely replaced. Opportunity was taken to reorganise the interior, and two new rooms have been provided with entry from the Fitzpatrick Hall staircase. One of these rooms is now reserved for the use of graduate and research students and the other is a quiet room by day and available when required for meetings in the evening.

The Clock Tower was stripped of its paint, and the oak facing was found to be in excellent condition. It has been treated with a transparent varnish, and the hands and weather-vane have been gilded.

Numerous changes have taken place at the back of Friars. There is now accommodation for 130 bicycles, and :five new store rooms have been provided.

~eens· rowing during the academic year 1958-59 can be summed up by the expression 'stenuning the tide'. In the previous May bumping races we hacl fallen four places and it was thus necessary to build the dub up again. The intake of freshmen produced no brilliant or ready-made oarsmen, but several of considerable pronnse.

In the Fairbairn Cup race at the end of the Michaelmas term, the First VIII dropped from fourth. to tenth position. During the Lent term the crew was carefully coached to row a consistent orthodox style. In the bumping races the First boat was bumped on the first two days and the~ improving with every evening's experience, maintained its position on the final two days.

During the Easter vacation we entered for the Putney Head of the River Race, and after an encouraging week's training on the Thames, finished eighteenth having started 248th as a new entry. In the May bumping races the First Vlil was bumped on the last day after three very hard rows on the previous days.

The Club was fortunate in having a large influx of freshmen and these, together with a keen and enthusiastic Seniors' membership, laid the foundations for a successful season.

In the Michaelmas Term the First XV played very well after a disastrous start in which the fust two league matches were lost to Magclalene and Downing. Recovering from this immediate setback to its hopes of promotion the XV, well led by its captain, C. J. van der Lande, went on to win five and draw two of the remaining seven matches. The side finished runners-up to Sidney Sussex against whom a creditable draw was earned, and thus returned to the First Division. The success was du.e mainly to the admirable play of a very strong pack which was particularly fast and mobile in the loose. The backs, though not outstanding, played an important part and were consistently reliable in both attack and defence.

The Second XV enjoyed only mixed success in the Third Division, fuushi.ng up just below half-way. The Third XV nnfortunatelywere relegated to the Fifth Division. The ~eens' XV, now fully revived, had a full fixture list and flourished nnder the captaincy of G. IC Needham.

The First XI began the Michaelmas Term very well, but owing

to a large nwnber of injuries in November, all hopes we had of

winning the League were dashed. However, we ended the season

sixth in the League. In the Lent Term we were wiable to continue

our recent successes in Cuppers. We met Caius in the first round.

The Second XI did not have a very successful season, being

relegated to the Fourth Division. The main reason for this was

a shortage of experienced players, but this lack of success did not

detract from the enjoyment of all who played. fu the Lent Term J. D. Brett represented the University and

The ~eens' League Hockey side in the season 1958-59 had a distinguished start but was halted suddenly by defeat in the game with St John's. They dropped few other points, and came fourth. The second team lost their possibly powerful chance to move out of the Second League, but played very creditably from time to time.

In Coppers Bye Round and First Round the full side played two extremely enjoyable games against Trinity and Emmanuel; needing extra time in the first case but becoming a more effective striking force in the following round. Against St John's m the semi-final this promise broke into fragments.

The Easter Tour at Folkestone was distinctly successful, especially on the field, where the necessary reserves fitted in well.

J. F. Cunningham returned to outside left in the University side against Oxford at Edgbaston. 0. Johnson played for the Wanderers versus the Oxford Occasionals and D. J. Buckton, C. J. Hawthorn and R. Aldred were also elected during the season.

This was to be the last year of athletics at Fenners and on initial showing it seemed that the College should acquit itself well in the Inter-College events.

During the Michaelmas term, the College team was third in the Inter-College Field Events, but only just avoided relegation in the relays by finishing seventh out ofnine. Individual achievements were brighter: four freshmen were selected to compete in the freshmen's match against Oxford; two members of the College competed in the lnter-V arsity Relays Match, and four in the corresponding Field Events Match.

Lent term competitions were limited to Cuppers and C.U.A.C. sports. Because of injuries we were relegated to the Second Division in a year when we might have been near the top. Individual achievements show that the College did not lack talent: M. C. Robinson, R. G. Reynolds and J. R. H. Sale were selected to compete in the University Match in the Hurdles, Shot and Javelin respectively. At the last meeting at Fenners, J. R. H. Sale set up a new undergraduate record by throwing the Javelin 205 ft. roin. He was selected for-the Great Britain 'B' Team v. Norway, and the England Team v. East Germany. M. C. There are a considerable number of squash players in the College. and consequently it is not at all difficult to have three teams playing in the League matches. Unfortunately the First V failed. to remain in the Second Division and was relegated.

J. L. Ramsden, who was last year's University secretary, is to be congratulated on being the :first recipient of a Full Blue for Squash. racquets.

We reached the second round of Cuppers, having beaten Corpus Christi, and then lost to Trinity 3-2.

In the inter-college revolver match, for the Waldegrave Vase, the College pair, C. T. S. Belle and R. J. S. Bates, came second. C. T. S. Belk came fourth in the individual match, the Victory Bowl.

The Club entered two pairs, C. T. S. Belle and A. R. I. Cruickshank (first pair) and J. W. Howard and R. J. S. Bates (second pair) in the small-bore match. Unfortunately, the precise results of this match are not available.

CHESS

President: D. G. ROWSELL Secretary: R.H. GOODALL

Unlike the members of most University Clubs, those who play chess for the University are not thereby debarred from playing for

their College. This is not wholly without disadvantage, however, as it means that the strongest players get rather too much chess. So the policy of the ~eens' Chess Club has been to 'blood' our

freshmen in the Cambridge and District Chess League, reserving

our strongest players for Cuppers matches. This policy has proved most successful for we won the Second Division of the League outright and without difficulty, losing only one match. We

finished third in the final Cuppers pool behind Trinity and Selwyn. We had the great satisfaction of beating Trinity in our individual match, but our Lent Term :results rarely lived up to the promise indicated in the Michaelmas Term.

R. C.Kenned.yagain represented the University against Oxford,

and in the Sununer represented Ireland in top board in the World Junior International Team Tournament in Budapest. In this tournament he beat Gurgedinze, the Russian International Master

in a superb game, which has since become internationally famous. P. J. Meade, now Secretary of the University Chess Club, also

Six debates and four discussions were held during the year, and attendance at the debates was sometimes as high as fifty members, rarely falling below thirty. This considerable increase on previous years was due in part to a vigorous publicity campaign for the benefit of freshmen, and also to an attractive programme of activities. Visiting speakers during the year included: Dr Clive Parry, Mr Alan Barker, Dr E. A. Maxwell, Mr C. S. Deakin, John Cockcroft {President of the Union Society), the Hon. J. P. F. St L. Grenfell and John Mott (VicePresidents of the Union Society), Brian Walsh, Brian Lapping and Leon Brittan (Committee Members of the Union Society), A. A. Stowell (President of the Liberal Club), and Martin Page {Editor of Varsity). At the dinner held at the end of the Lent Term, the President of ~eens' was the chief guest. Disappointing features of the year were the relative lack of interest of third-year members of the College, and (perhaps related to this) the almost complete lack of representation of the Society (and therefore of the College) in the activities of the Union Society. Nevertheless the year was in many ways an encouraging and enjoyable one, and the considerable increase in attendance at debates was of itself an incentive to a higher standard of speaking.

Since the last report not only has the University lost an eininent theologian but the St Margaret Society has lost a beloved President in Doctor, now Professor, Chadwick We very much appreciate all the kind interest and help with which Dr Chadwick has encouraged the Society for many years, and hope that both he and his family will be very happy in Oxford. Nevertheless we are very glad to be able to welcome Dr Maxwell as our new President; music and mathematics have always llllled well.

Throughout the year the St Margaret Society Singers have met each week and provided songs for all our concerts. During the Michaelmas and Lent Terms our weekly Organ Recitals by organists from the University have continued; and at irregular intervals Tuesday evening informal concerts, even smoking concerts, have taken place. At the main concerts in Michaelmas Term the College Chorus gave a performance of Bach's Sleepers Wake and part of the Christmas Oratorio, and in the LentTermwe sang Faure' s Requiem.

At the May Week Concert, Stephen Gold by gave an excellent performance of Mozart's Clarinet Q__uintet and the Chorus sang two 'Tudor Portraits' by Vaughan Williams. In the larger University sphere Stephen Goldby, in the Michaelmas Term, gave a programme to the C.U.M.C. which included a set of Slovak folk-songs by Bartok performed by the St Margaret Singers.

Isherwood and W. H. Aud.en. The presentation of this rarely performed play, typifying the attitudes of the pre-war generation, aroused great interest in the University and the production received considerable critical acclaim in undergraduate journals, Martin Caven receiving high praise for his performance as Michael Ransom.

The Lent Term revue in the hands of Roger Brown gave scope for talent tried and new, and sustained the high reputation of the 'Bats' for the musical revue. Freshman Nigel Farrow contributed some interesting new material.

The May Week production of Much Ado About Nothing broke .all records. Fine weather drew large audiences and over I 500 people came to the four performances, with 468 crammed into Cloister Court on the last night. Frank Bechhofer' s production moved with speed and vigour with some interesting lighting effects. Commodore of the QE;eens' Punts: R. s. VIN.Ell

In the second year of their existence the College Punts, thanks to the fine weather, had a very successful season. It is hoped and expected that at the end of the coming season there will he a substantial sum towards the capital accumulation fund for the eventual purchase of new punts.

THE MAY BALL, 1959

Organizing Committee: MR w. HAGENBUCH,MR P. MATHIAS, DR J.E.

BALDWIN, G. T. HANCOCK, R. G. REYNOLDS, P. J. WALSH, M. H. A

GIBBES, I. G. PARK, J. f. CUNNINGHAM, R. I. COOPER-DRIVER.

The 19 59 May Ball was held in the grounds of the College on 16 June. More than three hundred couples (a greater nwnber than ever before) were able to dance to Bill Savill' s orchestra in the large marquee erected in the Fellows' Garden, or to the University Jazz Band in the Fitzpatrick Hall, or to the Gipsy Serenaders in the Grove.

The beauty of the College was displayed to the full with tasteful decoration, superb floral displays and most effective lighting, all centred upon the Hall, where a truly magnificent buffet was provided.

Julian and Adrian Slade sang together in a- Cabaret that was exactly the right mixture of sophistication, wit and nostalgia.

The Staff of the College gave of their best, and the organizing Committee felt that much of the success of the Ba]} was due to their efforts.
