CCC RECEIVES LARAC FUNDING The Salem Courthouse Community Center is pleased toannounce it has received LARAC funding in support of two worthy initiatives. The 2013 grant willenable the CCC to once again offer its Music in the Courtroom chamber music series under thedirection of accomplished pianist, conductor and educator, Daniel Shulman. The Sunday concertsat 3 pm will be offered on June 9. Mr. Shulman has lined up an impressive roster of talentedperformers who will present compositions by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mozart.Mr. Shulman’s commentary before each selection provides great insight into the lives of the composersand the times in which they lived. LARAC has also funded Art for Young Students, a wonderfulopportunity for art instruction which will be offered over the spring school break from April 1through April 5. The classes are being conducted by Gabi Moore, an artist who lives in Cambridge.

Gabi has extensive teaching experience including eleven years at Fordham University. Studentsbetween the ages of 5 to 9 may take advantage of “Painting for Fun” from 1 to 2 each afternoon.“Extreme Drawing” is being offered to students between the ages of 10 to 14 each afternoon from2:30 to 3:30. entertaining summer read, Saturday, June 1st at Hermit Hill Books on Main Street in Poultney,Vermont, from 10 am to 2 pm. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE- The officers and members, Ladies Auxiliaries, Men’s Auxiliary

and Sons of the Legion of Greenwich Post #7291 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Greenwich

Post #515 of the American Legion invite you to our annual Memorial Day parade in Green-

wich Friday, May 31. Participants will assemble along Washington Street. You will be noti-

fied on the order of march for your unit upon arrival. The parade will start at 6 PM following

a brief ceremony on the bridge over the Battenkill River honoring those who died at sea.

The parade will then continue marching west on Main Street, onto Abeel Avenue, ending at

the VFW building. Heavy vehicles and equipment will be directed down Wilson Avenue for

easy exit from the rout, either west on Wilson or east on Forrest Ave. We would be very

appreciative if all youth athletic coaches formed up their groups on Elbow Street. A final

tribute will be held on Thursday, May 30th, the traditional Memorial Day, at 5:30 PM begin-

ning at the monument at the corners of Church and Salem Streets, continuing at the Civil

War Monument at the intersection of Rte. 29 and Washington Square, then on to the two

cemeteries and ending at Veterans’ Park at Main Street and Corliss Ave.

Q: What is Memorial Day all about?

A: Memorial Day is a United States federal

holiday which occurs every year on the final

Monday of May.[1] Memorial Day is a day of

remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States

Armed Forces.[2] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the Ameri-

can Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the

Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Ameri-

cans who have died in all wars. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation

season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who

have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each

grave in national cemeteries.By the early 20th century, Memorial Day was an occasion for more general ex-

pressions of memory, as people visited the graves of their deceased relatives in

church cemeteries, whether they had served in the military or not. It also became

a long weekend increasingly devoted to shopping, family gatherings, fireworks,

trips to the beach, and national media events.

Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late

spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the

mountains. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well

as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the

character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of

miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew

contacts with kinfolk and others. There often is a religious service and a "dinner

on the ground," the traditional term for a potluck meal in which people used to

spread the dishes out on sheets or tablecloths on the grass. It is believed that this

practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin

of the "memorial day" idea.Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of

remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day

celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, living or dead.
