Over $500 million will now be invested on sport and transport infrastructure as a direct result of the successful bid. “Congratulations to the Gold Coast, to Queensland and Australia – we did it!” said Ms Bligh. “Our united community welcomes these games. “In 2018 we will be ready to host a unique world- class and friendly event that builds on the Commonwealth brand and enhances our city’s reputation. “This city will be transformed with new infrastructure and a buzz that only a big international event like this can bring.” The Premier said the successful bid to host the games would mean infrastructure upgrades including:

Increasing the capacity of Metricon stadium from 25,000 to 40,000 seats New badminton and mountain bike facilities A world class squash complex Development of the Coomera Sports and Leisure Centre. Upgrades to the Broadbeach Bowls Club, Gold Coast Hockey Centre and the Gold Coast Aquatic

Centre. “Ever since I picked up the phone to the President of the Commonwealth Games Association Mr Sam Coffa during the Beijing Olympics to suggest our games bid I knew the Gold Coast was in with a chance,” said the Premier. “Today we hit the bullseye – 2018 is the Gold Coast’s time to shine!” Ms Bligh paid tribute to Sri Lanka’s bid city Hambantota. “Make no mistake this was a tough contest and all Queenslanders should be thrilled with the result,” she said. “These games will bring superb tourism opportunities for the Gold Coast and for Queensland. The Games will also act as a catalyst to fast track infrastructure development. “We will see new sporting facilities, improved transport and a new Health and Knowledge precinct adjacent to the $1.76 billion Gold Coast University Hospital. “We have made a promise to the Commonwealth Games Federation and will deliver on this promise.” Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Bid Chairman, Mark Stockwell said the whole Bid team is overjoyed with the result. “Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Bid and this outstanding result, it was a collective effort and one that Gold Coasters, Queenslanders and all Australians should be very proud of,” Mr Stockwell said. “The games will put the spotlight on the Gold Coast, and whilst we don’t want to lose our ‘famous for fun’ character, we do need to reinforce our capabilities as a serious business community with strengths across a number of diverse industries. “A lot of very hard work went into the Bid but it doesn’t stop there – we need to put the same amount of energy and passion in to prepare and deliver the very best event the Commonwealth has ever known.” “Congratulations Gold Coast – let the Games preparations begin,” Mr Stockwell said.

Stymied byworld woesGLOBAL economic uncertainty isweighing on the minds of propertyinvestors far more than interest ratemovements and real estate prices, according to a national survey bymortgage broker Loan Market.

A survey of the company’s mort-gage brokers found 43 per centb e l i e v e d t h e g l o o m y g l o b a le c o n o m i c o u t l o o k w a s t h emajor influence.

Loan Market corporate spokes-man Paul Smith said only 9 per centof the 209 brokers who respondedbelieved interest rates were a keyfactor for investors.

Mr Smith said despite investorsshowing concern about the debtcrisis facing Europe and the UnitedStates, brokers had seen them as agrowing force in the home financemarket this year.

‘‘A recent survey had found 33 percent of our brokers believed prop-erty investors would be the majorconsumer group in the housingfinance sector in 2012,’’ he said.

‘‘Further interest rate reductionsand softened property prices havebeen enticing investors and first timebuyers, who also targeting invest-ment properties as their entry pointto the property market.’’

Buyers jumping inMORE than 20 per cent ofhomesites in AVJennings’ firststage at the Big Sky community,Coomera, have sold ahead oftheir construction completion laterthis month.

The developer has officially laun-ched the first 26 homesites in the$140 million residential com-munity, off Finnegan Way, pricedfrom $234,900.

AVJennings chief operatingofficer Mark Henesey-Smith saidmore than $1.1 million in sales hadbeen made, with interest from adiverse mix of buyers, includingyoung families, couples and con-struction workers.

‘‘Coomera is undoubtedly theGold Coast’s growth area and is setto remain so for years to come.

‘‘As a result, it appeals to adiverse range of buyers and theinterest has reflected that,’’ he said.

‘‘These first homesites haveattracted those who see this as agreat opportunity to get in on theground floor and be part of thefuture growth of the community.’’

Mr Henesey-Smith said interesthad continued to increase on theback of the recent announcement

by the Queensland Governmentthat the $10,000 Building BoostGrant would be extended by threemonths to the end of April.

‘‘Buyers often simply don’t leavethemselves enough time to gothrough the process of researchingand selecting a homesite that suitstheir needs, finding the perfecthome to match and finalising theirbuilding contract,’’ he said.

‘‘The extension is a great oppor-

tunity for these purchasers to takeadvantage of the grant and forthose just considering building anew home to start the process, withthe comfort they have time tomake the right decision for them.’’

Mr Henesey-Smith said AVJen-nings would release a total of 318homesites at Big Sky over the nextfive years, including a mix of lots tosuit a variety of buyers from com-pact low-maintenance 410sq m

homesites to traditional 756sq msites. The 17 homesites in thesecond phase of stage one are duefor completion in April.

‘‘Our vision for Big Sky is tocreate a place for families to growand come together, with thehomesites set among a proposed 17hectares of open space, which is setto include a network of bikeways, walkways and parkland,’’ he said.

‘‘The community is also ideallylocated to take advantage of all thegreat amenities now available, under construction or proposedfor Coomera , inc lud ing theplanned Coomera Town Centre, which is just across the road, theCoomera TAFE campus, schools, theme parks and the Gold CoastCity Marina.

‘‘Its ease of access to the M1,which puts the community just a15-minute drive from the centralGold Coast and 40 minutes fromBrisbane, and the Coomera RailStation, also make it appealing tothose looking for proximity to boththe Gold Coast and Brisbane forwork and recreation.’’
