Queensland’s Morris Register President, Col Schiller

Hi every one,

Christmas is fast approaching and the event is getting closer. How is your car or project progressing? My 1914 is almost ready, the body is complete but when I went to drive it, I realised the clutch didn’t work, so looks like it will have to be removed and internally inspected. The previous owner supposedly reconditioned the clutch, but maybe it hasn’t been.

Please consider sending Jill an update on your project and she might be able to include it in one of the newsletters.

Apparently we cannot use the word “Rally” to describe the event as the CTP insurance will be invalidated. The Queensland Historic Motoring Council has advised we use words like “Tour, Touring Assembly, Run or something similar”. They suggest that the Insurance companies consider “Rally” to involve competitive motor sport and are refusing to provide coverage. Maybe check with your Insurance company for further advice.

On behalf of my family, I wish you all a

Very Merry Christmas!

Be careful on the roads

and enjoy yourselves. Col

VMR President, Ian Grace and introducing his lovely wife, Jayne Written by Events Coordinator Jill Fowlie

At the 21st National Morris Register meet we will be joined by the Vintage Minor Register (VMR) celebrating their 2nd Australasia Event and headed by Ian Grace. In 2005, at the first VMR rally, about a dozen VMR members gathered in the Hunter Valley and now they are very excited about attending their second event in 2018 on the Fraser Coast. VMR publishes a magazine four times a year and it is encouraging to see that some of Ian’s followers are ‘doing the costings’ to attend. Check the website www.vintageminor.co.uk.

In 2000, the Vintage Minor Register was set up for the pre-war Morris Minors, and then in 2011 the summer rally developed into an all-comers pre-war car weekend based at Prescott in the Cotswold Hills, a speed hill climb venue that is superbly scenic in the west of England (www.prewarprescott.com). Ian and Jayne are ex-pat Brits and live and work in Seattle, USA. Every July they head to Britain to run the weekend.

Ian’s other passion is aircraft. He inherited a love of de Havilland aircraft after growing up in the footsteps of his parents. During the pre-war years Bill and Clarice Grace were a formidable team in the aircraft industry and Ian has put together a 30 page booklet paying tribute to his father. I will have the booklet exhibited at the meet headquarters but for those members wanting to view the document online, the site is: http://www.n5490.org/Pilots/Bill%20Grace/Bill%20Grace.html. Also if you track this URL back to its root you will unearth much more.

Living in Seattle and having three Moth aircraft of his own all under restoration, and running the US de Havilland Club, Ian is in the process of founding a non-profit de Havilland trust to operate them. I now quote Ian: “spare time has become something of a contradiction in terms for me. As Mohammed Ali once said, ‘don't count the days, make the days count.’”

Because of his association with aircraft our Morris Register member, Gary Schulze, has arranged for Ian to visit the Hinkler Hall of Aircraft in Bundaberg before the start of our festivities. If there are members who would like to join Ian and Jayne on their day visit to Bundaberg, please contact Gary on his email address [email protected] Hervey Bay to Bundaberg is 120ks and travel time is 1½hrs.

As Director for the Morris Register of Queensland, I look forward to welcoming you all to the Fraser Coast in sunny Queensland. Australia is a large continent and to go anywhere in our country takes time and days of preparation. We are honoured to have our Aussie friends travel many thousands of kilometres from around our great country to attend the Fraser Coast event. I think we have met our match in extending a warm invitation to those overseas members in 18 countries who are considering this trip and will travel thousands of ‘miles’ with foolproof preparation. We are honoured to have you visit our ‘down under’ shores.

Ian has agreed to be a guest speaker and I’m sure he will have more to tell us.

Please continue next page as Ian has just emailed me with an important message.

Merry Christmas!! Jayne and I send our absolute

best wishes to one and all ‘down under’ The photo of Jayne and I was taken aboard the Cunard RMS Queen Mary 2 on our 35th Anniversary celebrations in 1983. We sailed from New York for two weeks to the Caribbean (married 2nd April 1983). We are SO excited to be sailing aboard the same Queen Mary 2 in just over two weeks on the same trip and celebrating Christmas and New Year at sea aboard this historic, unique and storied ocean liner. And then our next fantastic trip will be our first ever visit to Australia to meet with you guys to coincide with our 35th! Words simply cannot convey to you how totally pumped we are about that! We will be staying with my elder (English) cousin Mike and his super Australian wife Barbie who live nearby. We have not seen them for over 30 years. Also, we'll be meeting up with Col and his FANTASTIC family who we had the tremendous privilege of meeting and spending such precious time with at our Summer Rally two years ago, and you and your husband and so many other VMR and MR members who we have never met before but cannot wait to meet. Things don't get much better than this! The photo of our 1929 Morris Minor fabric saloon covered with SNOW was taken when we spent 8 years in southern Germany when I was working for the European Space Agency in Darmstadt, Germany in the 1990's. The area where we lived was a northern outcrop of the Black Forest (Sschwartzwald in German) called the Odenwald. It was a mountainous area south of Darmstadt and the region was dotted with picturesque and medieval towns, stunning in

the deep midwinter. RIGHT PHOTO: 1929 Minor tourer I had

when living in Michigan.

New topic. Jayne and I would LOVE to invite ANY of you guys who would like to visit the spectacular Pacific Northwest of the USA to stay with us - our house is yours! We are so lucky to live in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and we are getting the first snows of the winter right now. In the next few days, traffic will become busy past our house as skiers head in droves for the slopes! Ian

State Parliament member for Hervey Bay, Ted Sorensen and Kingfisher Bay Resort personnel Leonie Belbin and Sven Reichelt were present for the drawing of the 2 night stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort. Ted drew the lucky winner, Alf and Pauline Padgett of Wallsend, NSW Entry No.39. They were so excited that they had actually won the holiday and can’t wait to tell their friends at the coming Sunday Morris Register run. It’s all go for a holiday on Fraser Island next year.

PHOTO AT RIGHT: A bit of sky-larking in Jill’s 1959 Morris Minor Convertible took them back to their youth, Sven was a bit concerned he may get a sunburnt head and I must admit the vehicle did sink a little when everyone settled in….. good job we were parked.

Kingfisher Bay Resort (KBR) will be giving away an even bigger prize to be drawn on Easter Sunday Awards night at the RSL. See my report on page 9 plus page 10 for KBR details

Alf and Pauline Padgett of Wallsend NSW

Congratulations Alf and Pauline

Following is the report from Gary Schulze. He doesn’t believe in a big fan fare, but I do. The Logo, we now have a logo thanks to Gary and his team. You may have noticed the logo on the front cover. It has come

together very well even though it did pose a challenge when the directive came through and he had to rethink the two clubs’ titles and their respective logos. Anyway the committee was pleased with the outcome. Well done Gary.

Regalia Officer, Gary Schulze

The logo has now been finalised and can be utilised

as an embroidered patch. It comes up nicely for our

shirts and hats as well as stickers and metal badges

etc. The shirts are polo type in four colours (white,

red, black and pale blue) with attractive piping.

I was fortunate enough to arrange for Ian Grace, a

visit to the Bundaberg Hinkler Hall of Aviation. We

are looking at visiting the Hall of Aviation before the

main event festivities on Tuesday, 3rd April. An

invitation is therefore extended to any other

participants who would like to attend. I have been

associating with the Hall for some years now, it is

well worth seeing and I can guarantee a very

informative day. We will remind members of this

offer as the Morris Register meet gets closer.

Numbers will be required so please give it

consideration.

Overleaf is an extract taken from the Bundaberg

Regional Council website. As mentioned earlier,

Hervey Bay to Bundaberg is 120ks and travel time is

1½hrs. Transport would be your own responsibility.

Margaret and I extend our Christmas greetings to

all……

HINKLER HALL OF AVIATION The Hinkler Hall of Aviation, located in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens on the city’s northern outskirts, is a major Australian tourist attraction operated by the Bundaberg Regional Council. The complex is an outstanding example of several communities working together with all levels of government to celebrate and honour the life and pioneering efforts of Bundaberg’s own aviation pioneer, Bert Hinkler.

The Hinkler Hall of Aviation pays tribute to Bert Hinkler as a pioneer of flight and as a person who was significant in the advancement of aviation during the early 20th century.

The Hall itself is a modern, dynamic and unique structure, made of soaring glass and steel, and filled with the personal story of Bert Hinkler. In this very building, Bert’s accomplishments are brought to life, offering the ability to view and obtain a real understanding of the historical, social, technical and physical impact arising from the achievements of one of Australia’s leading aviators. The experience brings together every element of Bert’s earliest dreams of adventure and imagination, and stands as one of Australia’s most significant cultural and educational attractions, catering for residents of and visitors to Bundaberg, history students and the budding aviation enthusiast.

A key element of the Hinkler Hall of Aviation is its foundation as a cutting-edge interpretive facility that educates and entertains through the preservation of Hinkler artefacts and memorabilia. Much more than a museum, the Hinkler Hall of Aviation celebrates pioneering aviation in all forms, and seeks to enrich our lives as a living storybook.

The facility houses original documents and photos plus six key aircraft associated with Bert Hinkler’s aviation history. Interactive displays, touch screens, a glide simulator, atmospherically controlled display gallery, lecture theatre, artefact work preservation and restoration facility and archival area all feature in the modern complex, designed to replicate the sleek and dynamic design of an aircraft wing.

In March 2010, Fairymead House was added as an exhibit of the Hinkler Hall of Aviation. Information on the history of Fairymead House is available on the Hinkler Hall of Aviation website.

You will probably notice a few changes here and there all to do with the word ‘RALLY’. The Queensland Historic Motoring Club has given us a directive on Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance for Special Vehicle Clubs in Queensland when coming together for an event. To ease concerns all around, our committee has decided to drop the use of the word ‘Rally’ for our Easter 2018 event hence there is a small amendment to the name of the two club ‘events’. Our President, Col did touch on this issue in his report on page 2 and he sums it up well in his last sentence, quote: “Maybe check with your Insurance company for further advice”.

Good to see the entry registration numbers are increasing for our 21st Nationals:

United States of America 1 Australian Capital Territory 2 South Australia 4 New South Wales 16 Victoria 15 Queensland 22 TOTAL: 60

Kingfisher Bay Resort is working with me to make this a holiday you won’t forget so think about a tour to Fraser Island. Leonie and Sven are offering two tours with a 15% discount. The Explorer Day Tour and the Fraser Island Adventure package are excellent tours and now is the time to think about it because they can be taken either before or after the rally. If before or after does not suit some members, maybe the ladies may prefer to take a day while attending the 21st Nationals over the Easter period BUT YOU WOULD HAVE TO BOOK WELL AHEAD being Easter – it’s the busiest time in Australia. Ring the reservation number at the end of the next page and make an enquiry. Don’t forget to tell them you are with the Morris Register Club Rally.

Nearly forgot…..our Christmas message: ChristmasGreetings to all our Friends and a

Safe and Happy ‘New Year.
