Upcoming Activities…
Mass Borrowing Activity by National Library Board (NLB)
9. Our school is collaborating with the NLB to encourage students to read for pleasure. As part of
our efforts, we will be conducting termly mass borrowing sessions for our students. During these
sessions, a wide variety of books will be brought to the school for our students to browse and borrow
on the spot. Students can also approach the NLB librarians for book recommendations. In Term 3, the
mass borrowing sessions will be conducted from Tuesday, 16 July to Wednesday, 17 July.
10. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the following so that your child/ward
will be able to borrow the books.
Ensure your child/ward brings his/her school EZ-Link card / library card and a bag to store the
books borrowed from 16 July to 17 July 2019.
Pay the fines (if any) in your child’s/ward’s library account.
Return all books in your child’s/ward’s account before the mass borrowing activity.
If your child/ward has lost his/her library card, please report the loss at any public library and
make a new library card. (Note: A fee will apply for a new library card).
11. Kindly ensure that the NLB books borrowed in the school from 16 July to 17 July 2019 are
returned to any public library by the due date that is indicated on the loan receipt. This is a teachable
moment parents/guardians can tap on to share with your child/ward the importance of being a
'Responsible Individual’.

our QtPS programmes through interactions with our students, teachers and school leaders. For existing
parents and students, it is a showcase of a cross-section of QtPS school life, with exhibits and activities
covering our academic, co-curricular and enrichment programmes. If you know of any parent/s who is/

Extravaganza cum Open House. For more information regarding the Learning Extravaganza cum Open

P6 Preliminary Oral Examination
13. All P6 students will be sitting for their Prelim EL/MT Oral examination on Thursday, 1 August
and Friday, 2 August. As such, all P1-P5 students will be dismissed at 12.00 pm on these 2 days so
that teachers and our P6 students can get ready for the examination in the afternoon. Please make the
necessary arrangements to fetch your child/ward at 12.00 pm on these two days. Parents/Guardians
whose child/ward takes the school bus will not need to make alternative transport arrangements for 1
August and 2 August.
National Education (NE) Show 2019 for P5 Students
14. As part of our NE programme, each batch of our P5 students will attend the NE Show. Since
1997, the NE Show has been organised to instil a sense of pride and belonging in our students and to
bring across the significance of our National Day. Every year, the National Day Parade (NDP) full dress
rehearsal provides an opportunity to inculcate NE values in our students. Our P5 students are privileged
to be part of this celebration where they will get to preview the NDP. All P5 students are expected to
attend the NE Show. Details of the NE Show will be given in a separate letter to all parents of P5 students
in due course.
e-Waste Collection Drive
15. In the 2019 Youth of Environment Day message, Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the
Environment and Water Resources, highlighted that Singapore generated 7.7 million tonnes of waste
each year. At the current rate of waste generation, Singapore’s only landfill, Semakau Landfill, will run
out of space by 2035. Hence, the ministry has designated 2019 as the Year Towards Zero Waste.
16. To support the Year Towards Zero Waste, our school will be participating in the inaugural
Singapore Environment Council - StarHub E-Waste Challenge. The e-waste collection drive will take
place from 1 July to 2 August 2019. A StarHub collection bin will be placed at the school foyer near the
front of the security counter. For a list of items that can be recycled, please refer to this website
https://www.starhub.com/about-us/corporate-sustainability/recycling-nations-electronic-waste.html or
the QR Code below.
17. E-waste refers to discarded electrical and electronic items such as wires, mobile phones,
computers, batteries, etc. E-waste contains toxic substances and its improper disposal can lead to serious
pollution and health problems. We look forward to your participation and support in this recycling
movement.
3rd Athletics Fiesta (only for P3 to P6 students)
18. Our 3rd Athletics Fiesta which will be held on Wednesday, 7 August 2019 from 7.45 am – 12
pm at Queenstown Stadium. The event will involve only students from the P3 to P6 levels and students
will need to report to school by 7.25 am in their school attire. Sports shoes are optional. Please note that
P1 and P2 students need not report to school on that day.
19. In this third edition of the Fiesta, we have a new Multi-Skills event, in addition to the traditional
100m individual and 4x100m relay races. On top of that, there are more activities to look forward to
such as the parent-teacher relay race and tele-matches for all to enjoy.
General Information…
Safety Matters
20. Student safety is our priority and we care about the safety of our students while they are waiting
at the bus stops outside our school at dismissal times. Thus, we would appreciate it if you can reinforce
5
the importance of road safety with your children and remind them on the importance of safety at bus
stops. Without constant reminders, young children may not fully appreciate the dangers on the road,
especially where there is the presence of big vehicles, such as buses.
21. We have prepared a list of Dos and Don’ts to guide students when they are at bus stops,
regardless of whether the bus stop is crowded or not, for their safety and the safety of others:
DOs
DO flag for the bus in advance.
DO stand behind the bollards (sturdy vertical posts along the kerb of bus stops) until the bus
has come to a complete stop.
DO board the bus in an orderly manner.
DO watch for your safety when boarding and alighting from the bus.
DO look out for oncoming traffic at all times.
DON’Ts
DO NOT step out of the bus stop and onto the road before the bus has come to a complete
stop.
DO NOT stand in front of the bollards to wait for buses.
DO NOT play or run around at bus stops.
DO NOT push one another when boarding the bus.
DO NOT cross in front of a bus.
DO NOT run to catch a bus.
22. Attached on page 6 is a poster on Bus Stop Safety. We encourage you to share these tips with
your children, and to remind them about safe and responsible behaviour at bus stops. Let us all do our
part to help our students to understand the importance of safety at bus stops.
Queenstown Primary Parent Support Group (QtPSG) News Bytes
23. This is a monthly newsletter published by our QtPSG committee which will feature past and
upcoming events/projects and parenting tips. The July issue is attached to this letter for your reading
pleasure.

Concluding Remarks…
“When you say “I can’t”, and expect the worst, then you become weak and unhappy.
When you say “I can”, and expect success, you fill yourself with confidence and happiness.”
By Ramez Sasson
25. Indeed, our mind plays an important role in helping us to achieve success. Having a growth
mindset generates confidence and this fuels our competence. As educators and parents, let us do our part
to cultivate a growth mindset in our children, so that they will possess the confidence to explore and
experience new learning and challenges in life.
26. Thank you and have a wonderful month ahead!
Best regards,
Ms Pearly Ng
Principal
