New findings in Beethoven’s first piano concerto
The Bärenreiter editor and Beethoven expert Jonathan Del Mar who has received international acclaim for his highly successful editions of Beethoven’s works now turns his focus on the piano concertos.
In the Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major op. 15, Del Mar has found no less than 17 corrections in Beethoven’s autograph which were made after the work was published. These have been brought to light in this new Bärenreiter edition. A detailed critical commentary documents all the sources and findings made by the editor.
This new critical edition sets the highest scholarly standards without losing sight of the needs of modern performers.

GabrielFauré:Barcarolles
BÄRENREITER URTEXTEdited by
Christophe GrabowskiBA 10842 · approx. € 20.50
To appear in March 2013
Fauré’s 13 Barcarolles, composed over a period of almost four decades (1882–1921) are highly representative of his output for piano and are regarded as his most characteristic works. They reflect his breaking free from the Romantic idiom, particularly that of Chopin and Mendelssohn, developing an independent musical language in which he combined tradition and the emerging modernism.
ChristopheGrabowski who is a French pianist and doctor of musicology studied in Warsaw and Paris. He has edited a volume of the Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré, is Series Editor of the Complete Chopin. A New Critical Edition as well as two volumes of the Édition Complète des Œuvres de Claude Debussy. Together with John Rink he published the Annotated Catalogue of Chopin’s First Editions in 2010.
Fauré’s four Valses-Caprices (1882/83–1894) demonstrate various forms of his treatment of the waltz in combination with the free form of the caprice. The composer drew his inspiration for his Valses-Caprices in the first place from works such as Liszt’s Valse-Impromptu and his Valse à capriccio and the famous Valse-Caprice by Anton Rubinstein.
These important groups of works are now made available in scholarly-critical Urtext editions based on the Œuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré and reflect the latest state of research. Detailed forewords offer information on the genesis and significance of the compositions as well as valuable suggestions on historical interpretation. All the available manuscript and printed sources as well as piano rolls containing recordings by the composer have been taken into consideration, leading to new discoveries particularly regarding the Valses-Caprices.

BÄRENREITER URTEXTEdited by Thomas Kabisch
With fingering by Martin WidmaierBA 10818 · approx. € 17.95
To appear in June 2013 Debussy links the 12 Préludes in his first book not by a tonal scheme, but by means of a chain of associative mottos or titles which appear at the end of each piece and which may give a hint of the overall poetic content. The musicologist Thomas Kabisch who specialises in Debussy’s piano music has edited this Urtext edition based on the latest research findings, resulting in an authoritative publication. The edition has a clear layout, practical page-turns and fingering by the experienced teacher Martin Widmaier, professor of piano at the Robert Schumann University, Düsseldorf. This fingering traces musical lines and supports sensitive sound production. There are also special fingering exercises to assist in the learning of the chordal structures. Thus, the edition provides the necessary prerequisites for studying these works.

BÄRENREITER URTEXTEdited by Jens RosteckBA 10807 · approx. € 7.95
To appear in April 2013
No distribution rights forthe USA and France.Between 1889 and 1897 Satie composed a series of piano pieces. He
gave these the eccentric title Gnossiennes and provided consciously ironic performance instructions in which he satirized the excessive gestures of Romantic piano playing. This Bärenreiter Urtext edition offers new variant readings and presents Gnossienne No. 7 in its authentic form for the first time. Like the Gymnopédies (BA 10804), the Gnossiennes are particularly suitable for piano teaching because of their easy to medium difficulty level.Suggestions for performance are given by the Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher. In addition a detailed foreword by the distinguished musicologist Jens Rosteck provides valuable information on the background to the composition, its significance and interpretation.

Major works by Dvořák innewly engraved editions
It was the Slavonic Dances for Piano Duet op. 46 which brought Antonín Dvořák unexpected international fame. An unerring business instinct led Fritz Simrock, at the beginning of 1878, to ask the Czech composer for some works for piano duet into which Dvořák incorporated musical themes from where he grew up. Following in the footsteps of Brahms’s Hungarian Dances, Dvořák refrained from a literal portrayal of individual kinds of dance. As a result, he created unique masterpieces of European music for domestic use and concert performance.
This edition of both series of the Slavonic Dances is based on the Complete Edition of the Works of Antonín Dvořák. The main sources are the first editions published by Simrock.

The catalyst for the piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition, composed in 1874, was a memorial exhibition held that year for the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. He was a friend of Mussorgsky who had died in 1873. It is not only Mussorgsky’s most important contribution to the piano repertoire, but through its relationship to Hartmann’s pictures and the translation of this idea into a composition, the cycle holds a unique place in 19th century piano repertoire.
ChristophFlamm, an internationally renowned specialist of Russian music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, has edited this Urtext edition for Bärenreiter. He has re-evaluated the sources and in the process has discovered surprising variant readings of the well-known musical text. The edition will meet the demands of advanced piano students, teachers and pianists.

With his Douze Préludes op. 36 and Trois Nocturnes op. 35 composed between 1914 and 1916, Vierne followed in the Romantic piano tradition, whilst lending the historic models that special sound between elegance and expressivity, as is characteristic for French music of the period. The editor of the volume is the distinguished pianist Olivier Gardon. As a performer and scholar, he has researched Louis Vierne’s piano music for over twenty years of which he has an unparalleled knowledge. This can be convincingly heard on Olivier Gardon’s complete CD recording of 1995.

“Eine kleine NachtMusick” is how Mozart entered the Serenade in G major in his personal catalogue of works on 10 August 1787. It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing Don Giovanni, a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer.
Eine kleine Nachtmusik “... written with ease, but skillfully refined”
The work is one of the jewels of Mozart’s output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting.
The manuscript was inaccessible to the public for almost half a century, but now Bärenreiter has received exclusive permission to produce a new facsimile of Mozart’s original. The edition reproduces the facsimile pages as individual sheets and leaves, reflecting the way the original copy has survived. These pages – in high-quality colour printing,

In 1887 Antonín Dvořák composed two terzettos for two violins and viola in quick succession as occasional compositions for amateurs. A little later, Dvořák arranged the second terzetto as four pieces for violin and piano with the title Romantic Pieces op. 75. Both works, that is the first Terzetto in C major and the Romantic Pieces, were published in May 1887 by Simrock in Berlin.

The String Quintet in E-flat major op. 97 (with two violas) is the third work Dvořák composed during his stay in America. “This quintet may be said in three of its movements to show the influence of American life and American music upon the composer” wrote the American music critic Henry Krehbiel on 7 January 1894. The use of particular melodic and rhythmic elements in his American compositions, as typically found in Afro-American gospels, strengthened the gathering conception considering Dvořák to be the founder of an American national style of music. The String Quintet in E-flat major was premiered on 12 January 1894 at the Carnegie Hall and was published shortly afterwards in score and parts by Simrock. This first edition is the main source for this publication.

Christopher Hogwood’s scholarly-critical edition of Brahms’ final and perhaps greatest trio op. 101 is based on two main sources, the first edition and the autograph. The foreword of this edition presents information on contemporary performance practice; Hogwood has drawn on the comments of Fanny Davis, a Brahms student, to shed light on this. She describes how Brahms played the trio with Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann at an informal reading (with Clara Schumann turning pages) in Baden-Baden in approx. 1895. Davis’ descriptions have much to do with articulation, dynamics and tempo fluctuations; in short exactly those aspects of performance practice where we lack real direction.

Well-known slow movements, melodies and arias have been arranged for two violins – with a passion for detail, but above all with convincing musical results. The arrangements stand out for their high fidelity to the original works. Both players are of equal importance and the melody with its expressive themes, moves frequently from one player to the other. Perfect for weddings, auditions or busking.
The arranger VladimirBodunov is a versatile musician from Belarus. He performs throughout Europe as a soloist, in orchestras and particularly in duo with his wife Marta Danilkovich.

Friedrich Seitz (1848–1918) was one of the best-known and most sought-after violinists of his day. This concerto starts with a resolute allegro in G minor, followed by a gentle adagio in E-flat major and flows into a cheerful dance-like final movement in G major. In order to play this, violinists must be able to master 1st to 3rd positions. A concise foreword by the renowned string pedagogue Kurt Sassmannshaus introduces the work and points out the relevant playing techniques required.
The series Bärenreiter’s Concert Pieces forms an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus string methods but can also be used to supplement any other string tutor.

Realization of the basso continuo by Christoph Harer
BA 10257 · approx. € 21.95
To appear in May 2013By means of their high degree of consistency and maturity, Handel’s chamber duets constitute a highlight of this genre. The six chamber duets for soprano and alto selected for this volume were written in 1710–12 in Hanover (HWV 178, 185, 197) and 1740–45 in London (HWV 181, 190, 186). They are musically demanding and structured contrapuntally: the earlier works are stricter, more scholarly and more elaborate in terms of counterpoint but masterly in their craftsmanship. The later ones are composed somewhat freer, but more compact.

Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine is without doubt one of the most popular sacred works of the 17th century. Apart from the many available recordings, it is frequently performed in its entirety or in parts. The Urtext edition of this well-known work has unusual origins. It originated from a graduate seminar at the University of North Texas, under the direction of the Monteverdi specialist Hendrik Schulze. The result is an edition which combines the latest in musicological research specifically with the needs of the performer in mind. This has lead, for instance, to a divergent evaluation of the Lauda Jerusalem oriented towards performance practice, with numerous additional accidentals and a new interpretation of the melodic variants from the different part books. These new musical and performance practice insights make a modern interpretation of this 400-year-old work possible.

The choral scene is in a state of change! On the one hand, more and more choirs are lacking in male voices, yet at the same time, more and more female choirs are looking for high-quality literature beyond folksong arrangements. Bärenreiter is responding to these general trends with the publication of arrangements for three-part female choir (SMA) of well-known, frequently-performed works. The first editions to be published are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Coronation Mass K. 317, a much-performed work within the standard repertoire and the Missa brevis in D major K. 194, a charming alternative for use in church services. With great skill and sensitivity to the music, Heribert Breuer has carefully retained the substance of the original works, at the same time giving them a completely new sound quality.
The arrangerHeribertBreuer was professor of choral conducting and music theory at the Berlin University of the Arts until 2010. He is founder and director of the Berlin Bach Akademie, and has made a name for himself with his numerous arrangements of works from Bach to Schubert.

Pergolesi’s famous Stabat mater, a work for two soloists, strings and continuo quickly became a success throughout Europe. However there are numerous indications that it was also performed by choirs from very early on. Particular movements were very probably sung by a two-part choir, whilst the arias were kept for the soloists. In this edition, the outer movements and no. 8 are now scored for three-part choir (SMA) in contrast to the solo aria movements. Three further movements are set as trios for three solo voices. The added parts are derived from the existing musical material. These lend this well-known work a completely new charm and provide a welcome addition to the repertoire for choral concerts.
The arrangerMalcolmBruno is the editor of the Urtext edition of the Stabat mater (BA 7679) and a renowned expert in 18th century Italian music.

With the publication of the six and seven-part motets, a revised version of the Geistliche Chor-Music is now complete. As Schütz wrote in his foreword to the collection, all parts to the motets can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally. These motets offer smaller choirs and ensembles new possibilities to perform these works, based on historically-informed performance practice. The basso continuo realization follows the composer’s intention of using the score merely as a basis for performance, but with its relatively simple realization, it also allows performers to create their own version.

Bach’s famous cantata for solo soprano, trumpet, strings and basso continuo BWV 51, Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, was probably composed in 1730 in Leipzig. The soprano and trumpet parts are particularly captivating due to their virtuosity. For a performance in Halle Bach’s oldest son Wilhelm Friedemann expanded the original scoring for numbers 1 and 4 by the addition of a second trumpet and timpani, increasing the brilliance of the work even more.
W. F. Bach’s arrangement has now been published for the first time as supplementary performance material. This version can be combined with the existing string parts.

And so, this monumental and complex composition has come to rank amongst the high points of Western culture. For good reason the “rediscovery” of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music began in 1829 with the performance of this work by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the Berlin Singakademie.
The autograph manuscript is regarded as one of Bach’s most beautiful – the fair copy demonstrates the importance he attached to the careful preservation of the work for posterity. A further special feature is the coloured ink with which he wrote the biblical text and the music of the chorale “O Lamm Gottes, unschuldig”.
This facsimile edition reproduces the autograph score of the St Matthew Passion for the first time in high-quality colour printing. The Bach specialist ChristophWolff introduces the background to the work’s composition andthe characteristics of the manuscript.
Barbara Schneider-Kempf and Martina Rebmann (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) provide further details regarding the history of the autograph manuscript.
The seal is used exclusively for facsimile editions published by Bärenreiter which meet the highest demands in both scholarly and technical terms. The distinguishing features include:● a facsimile in high-quality
colour printing● scholarly commentary● attractive cover design

Handel set the myth about the love of the shepherd Acis for the sea nymph Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses a total of three times: in the cantata Aci, Galatea e Polifemo HWV 72 (1708), the masque Acis and Galatea HWV 49a (1718) and finally the pasticcio-like serenata Acis and Galatea HWV 49b (1732) of which the original version is now made available in its complete form for the first time.A particular charm is provided by the use of two languages in the serenata. The work was originally conceived in English, as was required for the first performance. However, Handel’s Italian singers were criticised for their poor command of English, – so in the end, many numbers were sung in Italian. The extensive appendix to the vocal score includes the additional arias and newly composed movements for the versions used in the 1734 and 1736 performances.

In 1736 Handel composed Alexander’s Feast or The Power of Musick, a two-part cantata based on John Dryden’s poem of the same name.In 1790, at the suggestion of Baron Gottfried van Swieten, Mozart arranged this work using a German translation of the poem made by Karl Wilhelm Ramler in 1770. As in other arrangements of Handelian works, Mozart’s re-instrumentation leads to a change in the sound character of the work, placing the composition in the tradition of the Viennese Classic.
• Vocalscoreavailableonsaleforthefirsttime
NowinarevisededitionFor the new edition of Handel’s Alexander’s Feast, the dynamic markings have been thoroughly revised. The three movements which Handel had added are published for the first time in the vocal score. The readability of the edition has been much improved and the writing of the piano part has become more idiomatic.

In 1774 Gluck undertook to deliver six stage works for the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. He fulfilled this commission partly with reworkings of works premiered earlier in Vienna, such as Orfeo ed Euridice. In the case of Alceste which was premiered in 1776 and was the prototype of the “reform opera”, he wrote a completely new version:the libretto was translated from Italian into French and changed at the same time. The music was also fundamentally reworked; for example, Gluck newly composed the recitatives and either expanded, cut or changed some scenes around. The public’s rejection of the work caused the composer to finally rework the third act again, including the introduction of Hercules as Alceste’s rescuer. Bärenreiter is now publishing the meticulously revised and corrected vocal score, newly-engraved and brought up to current Bärenreiter standards.

The preference of English audiences for large-scale vocal works led to Dvořák being commissioned in November 1883 to write a cantata for solo voices, chorus and orchestra for the 1885 Birmingham Musical Festival. As the basis for his composition, Dvořák chose the ballad text Svatební košile (literally “The Bridal Gowns”) from the collection Kytice z pověstí národních (“A Garland of Folk Tales”) by the Czech poet Karel Jaromír Erben (1811–1870). Dvořák stipulated that the premiere take place in Bohemia. The work was then taken up in England with great enthusiasm.

The Glagolitic Mass, a significant sacred work in Leoš Janáček’s output only appears towards the end of his life. Janáček composed this work for soloists, chorus and orchestra in Old Church Slavonic in the spa resort of Luhačovice in the summer and autumn 1926. He revised it at the end of 1927 after its first performance (Brno, 5.12.1927). The score of the mass was only published after the composer’s death in 1929.
The later revision, known as the “final authorised version”, is contained in this study score edition. This is the significant version which is mostly used for performances. It is richer in orchestration, easier to learn and more stringent in some important passages.

La Calisto received its first performance in Venice in 1651 but only really achieved its breakthrough in the 20th century. It is one of Cavalli’s most frequently-performed operas today. The reason for this success may have been the late acknowledgement of its masterly dramatic and musical structure. The musical text is not presented in the usual small study score format, but in the vocal score format (19 x 27 cm). This results in an optimal and well-presented layout of the work. The study score is ideal for analysis as well as for rehearsing the vocal parts.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7 was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in August 1883 and received its premiere on 22 April 1885 in London conducted by the composer himself. The following June the second movement was shortened by some 40 bars and the work was published in this form in 1885 by Simrock.
The editor of this new scholarly-critical edition is Jonathan Del Mar who has gained an international reputation for his edition of Dvořák’s cello concerto in B minor (BA 9045), not to mention his editions of works by Beethoven and Elgar. Del Mar has drawn on all the available sources including letters. The original version of the second movement appears in the appendix as well as in the performing material.
This new Bärenreiter edition sets the highest scholarly standards whilst also taking the needs of modern performers into account.

Haydn’s Sturm und Drang symphonies along with the London symphonies belong to his most popular works today. The Sturm und Drang symphonies contain not only masterpieces like the recently published Farewell Symphony (No. 45, BA 10971) and the Maria Theresia Symphony (No. 48, BA 10972), but also gems such as La passione (No. 49).
The publication of this symphony presents a continuation of the collaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large vocal compositions, operas and symphonic works. La passione is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn and is published with a full score and performing material on sale in a large format.

To appear in June 2013The fifth volume of this well-established Urtext edition includes the Dix Pièces and the Fantasietta with variations on a Provençal theme, which are published for the first time since the first printed edition. The Dix Pièces have a clear formal structure, and, like many other works by Dubois, who was organist at the Paris church of La Madeleine, reflect the composer’s desire to create works which could be performed equally well in church services or the concert hall. As with the previously published volumes, this edition includes facsimiles, a critical commentary with a full listing of the sources as well as a detailed foreword which contains a biography of the composer and sheds light on questions relating to the instrument and performance practice.

ModestMussorgsky:NightonBaldMountain
Transcription for organ by Zsigmond SzathmáryBA 11211 · € 16.95
Already published
Night on Bald Mountain is one of the best-known works of 19th century Russian programme music in the world. With virtuosic orchestration, the composer depicts a demonic witches’ sabbath on St John’s Night on the Triglav mountain.
ZsigmondSzathmáry (b. 1939), the internationally-known concert organist, has reworked the music of this symphonic poem to create a new work which puts the sound possibilities of the concert organ fully to the test. In the process, a virtuosic work has been created, a technical and musical challenge for organists and a guaranteed treat for audiences. “Tonally expressive dimensions coupled with unheard-of virtuosity”, rejoiced one music critic after the performance.
