One male and one female overthe age of 18 will be selected toreceive the package valued atmore than $5800.

The winners simply need to liveon the Sunshine Coast, have anambition to take on long coursetriathlon and own a bike (or bewilling to buy one).

Successful candidates willreceive coaching sessions and aprogram from Atlas Multisports, aprofessional bike fit by Cycle Zoneusing the state-of-the-art RetülMuve SL Dynamic platform,chiropractic support from HendreyChiropractic, race kit from AllezSport and entry to November’s

Hervey Bay 100.“This is a remarkably exciting

opportunity for two people to gettheir start in triathlon,” MultisportMecca editor Grant Edwards said.

“Getting involved in triathlon canbe daunting for many. For thosewho see Mooloolaba, Noosa oreven Caloundra triathlons for thefirst time, they can feel intimidatedamong those who are moreexperienced.

“We want to break down thebarriers and help two lucky peopleachieve their goal, and share theirstory with readers along the way.”

Upper body strength is gainedthrough swimming, while cyclingand running does the same foryour lower body.

The Hervey Bay 100 is anachievable distance for even newathletes, featuring a 2km swim,80km ride and an 18km run.

While it sounds daunting, the

longer distance events enableathletes to pace themselvesthroughout, rather than thehigh-threshold pressure of sprintor Olympic-distance events.

“Through assembling this groupof experts we’ll be able to guideour competition winners toconquer this challenge,” Grantsaid.

“There are so many greatpeople involved in triathlon, and

it’s amazing how you meet peoplefrom all walks of life.”

KIEL Mountain’s RichardThompson claimed a remarkableworld record-breaking victory inUltraman Australia at NoosaHeads last Monday.

Competing in front of homefans, the 32-year-old clocked21hrs21min14sec to shatter theold mark by 17 minutes.

“That’s certainly something Ididn’t expect going into the event,that’s for sure,” he said.

“(But) the last three days havejust been clinical.”

The gruelling format included a10km swim and 141km ride,followed by a 264km ride on daytwo before finishing with an 84kmrun on day three.

Richard was the first to thefinish line each day. The only timehe wasn’t leading was just out ofthe swim, when Michael Harveyclocked the fastest time of2:28:35. Richard was just twominutes behind and quickly turnedthe screws when on the bike totake a commanding lead.

“There’s a sense of relief and ahuge amount of gratitude to my(support) team,” he said.

“They’re friends I’ve had foryears and they’ve all doneIronman events and over the lastthree months they have given theirown time to have meetings or trainwith me.

“And it was three days ofabsolute perfection from themcrewing for me.”

Richard only got into the50-strong field in Februaryfollowing another athlete’swithdrawal.

The race provided him with anopportunity to exorcise somedemons which had plagued himsince last year’s Ironman WorldChampionship.

A former age group winner atthe famous Hawaii event in 2008,he was left dejected by his secondouting in Kona, a ninth placing inhis division.

“I rode far too hard tooearly...and for me it was such adisappointment,” he said.

“It’s really grinded the teeth, thefact I wasn’t able to do what I wascapable of so to have this result...”

Before Ultraman Australia, hepicked the brains of formercompetitors, including a “four hourcoffee” with inaugural winnerDavid Kalinowski.

As a result, he adopted arun-walk strategy during the daythree double marathon and itproved crucial, especially becauseRichard had been troubled byknee complaints in recent months.

The leg injury had hampered hispreparation to the point he wasforced to do light water runningwhen he was scheduled to do hislong runs.

He “flipped the mileage” andactually ran a marathon just aweek before he took to the startline.

Richard said ‘home ground’

advantage was also “integral”.“For the past three months I

haven’t trained anywhere but onthe course, except in the pool,” hesaid.

He lives just 10km from the bikeroute.

“So I knew every corner andevery bump, which was a hugeadvantage.”

A qualified lawyer who practicedon the Coast for six years, Richarddecided to focus wholly on T:ZeroMultisport coaching from last year,with Scott Farrell.

He hopes his dogged effortduring the three days inspiresothers to attempt UltramanAustralia next year, when he islikely to be part of a support crew.

Richard won’t race for a while,with a return to Hawaii on theagenda at some stage in the nextfew years. But for now he’s keento support his wife Lisa, who ispreparing for Ultra-TrailMont-Blanc, a 120km run in theAlps in August.

Among the other Coastcompetitors, Ultraman rookiesKeith Maricich and Sam Cookefinished in the top 10. Noosa’s

Andrew Hartnett was 16th.Sean Riley beat the mark he set

last year by nearly three hours,while Ben Johnston was ecstaticwith his inaugural finish.

It was sad news for CarmenAtkinson, who after a strong swimhad pushed into third on the bikebefore a nasty crash at the 90kmmark. She has no recollection ofthe accident which left her inGympie Hospital, but she isalready eyeing an Ultraman return.

STEPPING onto the Mooloolabasand at the culmination of thisyear’s Island Charity Swimprovided an unmatchedatmosphere.

The sense of community whichsurrounds this iconic swim issomething to behold.

Starting on Mudjimba beach,going around Old Woman Islandand then setting course forMooloolaba attracts experiencedswimmers and rookies alike.

For the first time since theinaugural journey by Bill Hoffmanand Ashley Robinson in 2001, acontingency course was usedwhere swimmers undertook fourlaps inside the protectedMooloolaba bay due to strongwinds and predicted swell.

Yet that did little to dampen theenthusiasm – not even some lightrain. Despite the change, 35individuals and 19 teams addedup to 111 swimmers hitting thewater.

Money is still coming in, butexpect between $60,000 and70,000 raised for Nambour andCurrimundi Special Schools.

Seeing the kids deliveringmedals to participants andperforming at the eveningpresentation ceremony is areminder of the worthy cause.

Without doubt, there are a lot ofgreat fundraising initiativesnowadays. Yet you feel humbledthrough being involved with thisevent.

Bill and Ashley are notinterested in any hero-worshippingfor starting this event. In fact theyboth gladly hide from anyadulation while helping in thebackground. They do take pride inthe fact this is become embraced

by the community.Parents of the children who

attend the schools are neverseeking handouts or sympathy,but they are truly grateful for thesupport they receive each year.

For those who haven’t beeninvolved, it’s one for thebucket list. Over recent months I

have trained with some amazingpeople, including Ultraman finisherTony Bryan and triathlete JarrodCovey who both undertook theirfirst Island Swims. There were alsosessions with David Ogg, long-distance veteran Sara Whitelaw,Robbie Andrews, Scotty Farrell,Wade Scougall and 10-time Island

Swim legend David Hendrey.Experienced swimmers,

newcomers and groups, everyoneis welcome.

It’s not about times or places.The reward comes from making

the journey and getting a medalfrom the smiling faces of thosewho truly appreciate the effort.

PODIUM one day, surgery thenext.

Part-time Noosa resident NickKastelein was under the knifeyesterday after breaking hiscollarbone in a bike crash whileracing Ironman 70.3 Barcelona.

But not only did Nick finish therace, he also managed to claw hisway into second to finish behindtraining partner and worldchampion Jan Frodeno.

Jan led out of the swim withNick, Ivan Rana and BertrandBillard in the lead group. Bertrandwas fastest on the bike, and withNick looking to bridge the gap hecrashed in wet conditions withabout 2km to transition two.

Getting back on despite injury,Nick ran himself into second spotwith a half marathon of 1:13:13 –just 1min 15sec slower than Jan.

This courageous performancetakes us back to 2013, when PaulCosta fell off his bike duringIronman Australia and popped hisshoulder out of its socket. Hemanaged to ride the remaining100km and finish the marathondespite excruciating pain.

After that event four years ago,

Paul said, “Everyone feels soreand tired doing an Ironman but itwas nauseatingly sick. That kindof pain which hits you right in theguts”.

“I knew something was prettywrong when every step you think‘I’m going to throw up here’,” hesaid.

BRISBANE professional JoshAmberger won the 22nd annualByron Bay Triathlon on May 13.

The race had its share of dramawith one 31-year-old competitorrequiring CPR after collapsing dueto a medical episode.

He was treated at the scenebefore being conveyed to ByronBay Hospital for treatment withpolice confirming they will not beinvestigating the incident.

Twenty-eight-year-old Joshfinished in a time of 1 hour 54minutes 28 seconds, ahead ofSuffolk Park athlete Matt Slee andthird-placed Nick Hull.

He started the year with asecond place finish at Ironman70.3 in Dubai, before competing inSouth Africa last month and willnow shift his focus to the IronmanCairns Asia-Pacific Championshipin June.

It was a big effort from Matt,who comes from a cyclingbackground and has only recentlystarted competing in triathlon.

He finished in 1hr57m40s whileHull crossed the finish line in1hr59m08s.

Meanwhile, Redcliffe

professional Holly Grice won theopen women’s division in2hrs12m04s. She finished morethan five minutes clear of Grafton’sCelia Sullohern andBrisbane-based Flick Abram.

There were about 1000competitors in all, with a kids’triathlon for the first time.

Leading Sunshine Coastperformances were fromBeerwah’s Ash Hunter who wonthe 25-29 women’s division, whileJenna Bugeja of Mountain Creekwas first in female 20-24.

It was around 3.30pm, as mostrace events were coming to anend, that the competitor collapsedon the ground in parklandbetween the finish line and ByronBay Surf Club.

CHASING an adventure and notjust a race led Jez Peterson toNew Zealand.

The Venture Cycles ownerjoined the prestigious five-dayTrans NZ Enduro last month wherehe finished fourth in the masters40+ men with a time of 2:05:28.

Just getting a spot can bechallenging, with prospectivecompetitors asked to lodge anexpression of interest, including abrief riding history and motivationto join the capped 120-rider field.

Each day featured vastlydifferent trails in the south island ofNew Zealand, starting atCraigieburn in the Canterburyregion and finishing inQueenstown.

Timed downhill sections wereincluded in each day’s three to fivehours of riding.

Competitors covered more than1500m of climbing each day andmore than 2000m of descending –totalling in excess of 12,000m ofdescending for the five days.

“I had done all the endurosaround these parts, and I waskeen to go riding places I hadnever been to before with people Ihad not met,” Jez said.

“I knew a handful of people, butmost of the other competitorswere from all different parts of theworld.

“Trying to hit trails as hard asyou dare when you have neverseen them before...you are hittingeverything blind so that was prettyexhilarating.”

The trails include native beachforest, alpine riding, roots, high-speed flow, loose, steep and rock.

As an added bonus, it’s anall-inclusive journey.

Riders are picked up at theairport, taken to backpacker-style

accommodation and then ferriedto the trails each day with all thefood and drinks provided.

“It’s all very cool,” Jez said.“In Australia I don’t think there is

any multi-day like that. I don’t thinkwe have the trails for it, withoutgoing to somewhere like Thredboand Mt Buller where there wouldbe big transitions.

“I’d recommend anyone to do itif you can get in.”

LAST-minute decisions have paiddividends for Courtney Home.

The Sunshine Coast24-year-old secured her spot atthe Hawaii world championshipthis month with an age groupvictory at Ironman Australia.

Her entry into the race came atthe 11th hour. Courtney onlyclaimed her start line spot on theTuesday before racing Sundayfollowing a discussion with coachRichard Thompson.

That meant she raced with littleexpectation, nerves oranxiousness surrounding herperformance – similar to herexperiences at Tweed andKingscliff where she won her agegroup.

“Originally I was going to doCairns and we were going to seehow I was going at the end of mybuild,” she said.

“All the races I have droppedinto with two or three days notice.I was feeling confident, but I didn’twant to go in with the mentality tosay ‘I’m, here to win’.

“I just wanted to go in with noexpectations and see how I went. Itried to keep it low key to avoid thepressure and the hype. I wantedto race for myself and not thinkother people were watching myresults.”

Courtney got off to a steadystart, completing the 3.8km swimin 1:04:20, before taking the leadduring the 180km bike leg with aneffort of 6:10:52. She then ran amarathon in 4:09:08 to easily winthe 18–24 category.

Ecstatic with the performance,she has endured some toughtimes away from triathlon. Aftermoving to the Coast last year, shehad personal difficulties and wasstruggling with her job.

Formerly from Chicago, andwith her parents still living in SanFrancisco, Courtney battled beingaway from family. But a new job,coach and boyfriend has seenCourtney quickly find her feet andtriathlon enthusiasm.

“I have a wonderful job now, myboss is delightful, I’m coached byRich Thompson and he has beenphenomenal with support inregards to everything in my life,”she said.

“It’s all coming together reallynicely.”

After a couple of weeks of rest,Courtney will now start herrecovery before looking to race70.3 Sunshine Coast in herpreparation for Kona.

“I want to go to Hawaii and dowhat has to be done. The goal isto win the age group,” she said.

“Ultimately I would love to raceprofessionally. It’s going to take alot to get there.

“When I raced Port I was racingat 75% of my potential. I know Istill have a lot in the bag.”

Also booking a spot on the BigIsland was Paul Davies and BarryOelofsen. They finished one-two inthe men’s 35–39 age group, Barryecstatic with the result given hehad two flat tyres during the bikeleg.

Barry, a South African-bornelectrician, is a relative newcomerto the Coast, and his fianceeKatey Gibb secured her firstprofessional win at 70.3 Busseltonon the same weekend as IronmanAustralia. He previously competedat the world championship in 2014and 2015,

EVERY time you get on your bikeyou want to be safe and get whereyou’re going in one piece.

You want to believe your fellowroad users will do the right thingand protect you from harm.

Sadly, already this year we haveseen a bicycle rider die onQueensland roads – this is onefatality too many.

If we are to see a reduction incycling deaths and injuries,motorists and bicycle riders mustboth take responsibility by beingaware of other cyclists on theroads and knowing which roadlaws exist to protect thisvulnerable road user.Know the rules – know yourrightsAs a keen bicycle rider, what canyou do to ensure your safety onour roads? Knowing theQueensland Government’s ‘staywider of the rider’ laws andeducating those around you is agreat place to start.

For motorists this includes, butis not limited to the following:■ Vehicles must stay wider of therider by giving at least one metrewhen passing bicycle riders in a60kmh or less speed zone; and1.5 metres where the speed limit ismore than 60kmh.■ Where cyclists are riding twoabreast, the minimum passingdistance must be kept from thecyclist furthest to the right.■ Drivers can cross the centrelines, including double unbrokencentre lines, straddle lane-lines ordrive on painted islands to passbicycle riders, provided themotorist has a clear view of anyapproaching traffic and it is safe todo so.■ If the minimum distance cannotbe abided in passing a cyclist,then the vehicle needs to slowdown and wait until it is safe topass, at the minimum distance.

But did you know the law onlyapplies to vehicles passingcyclists, not cyclists passingvehicles? The penalty for a driverpassing too close is three demeritpoints and a $353 fine. If thematter goes to court, a maximumfine of $4712 can apply.It’s a two way street – top fiveroad rules for cyclistsWe’ve all heard motoristsnegatively stereotyping cyclists asa result of the unsafe or unlawfulaction of one or two individuals.

While you can’t control theundesirable attitudes of motorists,

you can make sure you’re not thecyclist whose behaviour justifiesthis by following these simplerules:1. Signal when turning right:You must signal your intention todo so with your right arm outhorizontally; your hand open, withyour palm facing forward.2. Keep your distance: Allow atleast 2m distance between youand the back of the car in front ofyou (when following for more than200m).3. Keep to the left: Stay as closeto the left as possible on a roadthat is not a multi-lane road (on amulti-lane road, you can take upany position within the lane). Don’tovertake another vehicle on theleft if it is not safe to do so or thatvehicle is turning left andindicating they will turn left.4. Maintain an appropriatedistance between riders: Avoidriding with more than two ridersside by side unless you areovertaking. Otherwise ride within1.5m of the other rider if you aretravelling side by side withsomeone.5. Use bicycle lights whenriding at night or in conditionswith reduced visibility: White(front) and red (rear) bike lightsneed to be mounted so they canbe clearly seen at least 200maway. Cyclists also need a redreflector that can be clearly seenat least 50m from behind thebicycle.Did you know?Sometimes it’s the lesser-knownroad rules that we may not beaware of that can cause the

biggest confusion and angstamongst road users, such as:■ Bicycle lanes are notcompulsory. Where one isavailable, you are not required bylaw to use it.■ You can ride on the roadshoulder, across a continuouswhite edge line on a bicycle.However, you must give way tovehicles on the road when movingback onto the road across thecontinuous white edge line.■ You’re allowed to ride yourbicycle in special purpose lanes,including: bicycle lanes, bus lanes,tram lanes (you cannot ride on atramway, i.e as exists on the GoldCoast) and transit lanes.■ You can ride across a zebracrossing or children’s crossing aslong as you come to a completestop first, and then:1. Proceed slowly and safely2. Give way to any pedestrian onthe crossing3. Keep to the left of anyoncoming bicycle riders.The path aheadThanks to significant campaigningin Queensland we’re seeingimproved road safety rules infavour of cyclists. But the lawsthemselves are not enough.

Increased awareness andrespects for the rights of cyclistson the roads is needed to promoteincreased respect for theirappearance on our roads.

Whether you’ve just startedriding or you’re an experiencedcyclist, educating yourself onQueensland’s cycling laws is keyto creating safe bikeways. But didyou know that failing to adhere to

these road rules could also impactyour bank balance?

Fines for flouting road laws varyand range from a minimum of $48for failing to keep left of oncomingvehicles to a whopping $1137 forexceeding the speed limit by morethan 40kmh.

Keep other cyclists safe andyour hip pocket happy bychecking out 10 of Queensland’scommonly broken road rules andwhat it will cost you to ignorethem:■ Failing to wear a bicycle helmet– $121 fine■ Riding a bicycle without brakesand a bell, horn or similar warningdevice – $121 fine■ Neglecting to keep left of thecentre of a road – $97 fine■ Overtaking in an unsafe manner– $170 fine■ Drinking alcohol while riding -$365 fine■ Ignoring a ‘Stop’ sign at a levelcrossing or intersection – $365fine■ Ignoring a ‘No U-turn’ sign atan intersection without traffic lights– $97■ Not giving way to a vehiclewhen entering a roundabout –$365 fine■ Failure to move out of the wayof a police or emergency vehiclewith its flashing lights or alarm –$284 fine■ Failing to give way to apedestrian in a shared zone –$365 fine

Real estate agent AndrewHedley of McGrath Noosa hascreated Business on a Bike, amonthly cycle ride wherebusinesspeople can pedal along ina group, keeping fit, makingcontacts and sharing work ideasand challenges.

Similar to the Business Cyclesrides undertaken from GiantSunshine Coast every Wednesdayfrom Mooloolaba, this new ride isa free, non-competitive andconducted at a leisurely averagepace of 25-28kmh. Leaving fromTrilogy Cycles bike shop at NoosaJunction on a weekday beforework, the ride lasts an hour and isfollowed by a half-hour groupcoffee to finish.

“It’s not meant to be peopleforcefully trying to network, butmore a natural process of meetingpeople,” Andrew said.

“If people are looking for a socialoutlet this is a healthy andinclusive environment, and notonly can participants potentiallyget more business, but also shareideas and challenges in a forumthat’s non-judgmental.”

The Sunrise Beach resident saidthe first three Business on a Bikerides had already broughtsuccess.

“We started with four riders onour first event, and last time wehad 10 riders ranging from a retailshop owner, electrician, businessconsultant and hotel resortmanager,” Andrew said.

“The electrician had seen adownturn in large contract work inthe mining sector of late, and saidnot only has he got back intocycling now, but has quicklypicked up some business with alocal retail owner.”

Andrew has a master’s degree

in Exercise Science, and thiscombined with his career in salesand marketing, and now a decadein real estate, helped inspire thisnew initiative, with cycling beingthe obvious choice for the keenrider.

“People are getting more andmore time-poor, sobusinesspeople are steeringtowards things more time efficientthan golf or a social networkinggroup outside work hours,especially if they have a family,” hesaid.

“There’s a huge correlationbetween cycling andbusinesspeople, and Business ona Bike means this socialnetworking can easily fit in withtheir early morning cycling routine,so they’re not missing out on workor family time.”

Andrew said novice cyclists arewelcome to participate.

“It’s non-competitive and moreabout enjoying the scenery at asteady pace,” he said. “Havingsaid that, it encourages people toget into cycling, it’s very inclusiveand we’re hoping to get morewomen along.”

Cyclists typically ride twoabreast (where safe to do so) andchat away at their leisure, as you’dfind in any cycling group ride.Andrew says knowledge of bunchriding is not essential to comealong, and the basics are obtainedquickly.

“When people are riding theytend to be a bit more open; it’s aninformal setting and everyone’s a

bit more relaxed,” Andrew said.“Business on a Bike is anopportunity to allow people thefreedom to talk shop in anorganised ride.”

The next Business on a Bikeride takes place on June 14,leaving Trilogy Cycles at NoosaJunction at 5.30am.

THE Ironman juggernautcontinues its stranglehold onAustralia’s biggest enduranceevents, last week announcingWest Australia’s Cape to Capeand Newcastle’s Port to Port arenew additions to its growing eventstable.

Both events were bought fromZubini Marketing & Management.

They join Ironman’s mountainbike portfolio which alreadyincludes races in New Zealand,

The Motatapu and the multiplestage The Pioneer, the RRRMountain Bike Challenge inCairns, and the Absa Cape Epic inthe Western Cape of South Africa.

Wanda Group bought Ironmanin August 2015 for US$650 million.

It was back in 2012 thatIronman bought USM Events,which used to run the multisportfestivals at Noosa, Cairns,Mooloolaba and Geelong.

The Noosa Summer Swim, presented by Milk &Co, is a bucket list event for any keen oceanswimmer. The event is over a full weekendprogram offering a range of distances for everyability, from junior events to a new 5.0kmmarathon distance where seasoned swimmers canpush their limits. Distances include 300m, 1km,2km, 3km on the Saturday, and then a 5km and1.5km option on the Sunday.
