FERROVIAL AGROMAN AND YOUR CHARTERSHIP

Definition of a chartered civil engineer?Chartered civil engineers are recognised around the world. Chartership shows that you have applied your skills and knowledge in the civil engineering industry and beyond. It demonstrates your commitment to learning, development in your field, and your responsibility to maintaining or creating new standards in the industry.

Why become chartered?Being chartered proves to your peers in the civil engineering world, that you have the confidence and ability to work on complex projects without supervision. Chartered engineers are often selected for senior positions when tendering for new projects. Clients prefer engineers to have chartership status as well as experience for the key roles.

Becoming chartered with Ferrovial Agroman will not only further develop your skills and abilities but will also put you in a stronger position for senior roles on future projects.

At Ferrovial Agroman, to become a chartered engineer (CEng), incorporated engineer (IEng) or engineering technician (EngTech), we have developed an industry-leading training programme. What are the Key steps to becoming chartered?

The road to becoming chartered is a fulfilling one. There are many stages to the process. As a graduate at Ferrovial Agroman, you will already have the educational base knowledge to succeed on this journey.

By enrolling onto our ICE Training Scheme you will also be able to develop and implement all of the skills that are required to become a modern-day civil engineer.

Our ICE-accredited Chartership Programme has been designed to enable civil engineers to gain the required experience and demonstrate all necessary attributes to achieve chartership status. We have developed a framework that supports your continuous learning, the recording of your IPD, and that capitalises on the experience of a network of well established engineers within the business. A key element of this is to have a 1-to-1 meeting with our ICE consultant to draw up a tailored development plan to ensure that the targets, timeline and any specific training requirements are identified. By running our Chartership Programme alongside the three-year Graduate Programme, we are ensuring that our graduates are not only developed in areas of leadership, stakeholder management and influence, but also have rounded technical knowledge and experience to become the future leaders of Ferrovial Agroman.

Page 17: QUEST UNDERGRADUATE SPONSORSHIP · 2020. 9. 3. · The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations in 2015 are the blueprint to achieving a better and more

The ICE, along with the Engineering Council, has a set range of Attributes in which all members must show ability in. As a prospective professional civil engineer, you must have a sound knowledge and of the construction process and the activities connected to it. You must also be able to identify, understand and manage risks to everyone engaged in the process.

KATY-LEIGH SMITHCremorne Wharf Depot, Environmental Lead, Thames Tideway TunnelI have been with Ferrovial Agroman as a Graduate for 2 years now. You would not believe it was this short of a period if I told you everything I have learned and experienced on the way. I joined Ferrovial Agroman straight after my MSc, without a full understanding about the construction industry or what my role would entail. My first day on the job I was straight into the deep end, and with the aid and support of my colleagues around me I very quickly learned new skills and what it takes to be an environment professional in the construction industry. I have always been supported and encouraged to be the best I can be whilst being entrusted with lots of responsibilities. If you put your all into the programme you get a lot back and the recognition you can receive is brilliant!

NOUR KASEMPackage Manager - Battersea Station, Northern Line ExtensionI joined Ferrovial Agroman as a graduate in 2016 to work on the Northern Line Extension at Battersea. From the very start I was given responsibility and the ability to delve into different aspects of the project. Within my first year, I was the co-ordinator of all the station precast elements in the civils phase. Now that we are in the station fit-out phase, I am managing architectural elements such as the internal glass reinforced concrete cladding and the precast cladding of the Eastern Head House, which is the station’s main entrance and the only above ground ‘architectural’ structure. To have the opportunity to work on such a prestigious project, where I will leave my mark on one of the oldest underground transport systems in the world in one of the greatest cities is nothing short of extraordinary.

REBECCA COLLINSProject Engineer, HS2Working for Ferrovial Agroman as a graduate has been a great start to my career in the construction industry. Ferrovial Agroman do not treat their graduates as graduates, we are given responsibility from day one and are treated with respect and trusted. The help and support on your project and from head office is fantastic, be it professional or personal. If you have a problem everyone is willing to help, listen and assist.

There are plenty of opportunities to move within your project if you are seeking to diversify from your current role. Along side this there is the opportunity to even move project if you feel that would be a better fit or wish to work in a different sector. In addition to this there are multiple events throughout the year to meet with fellow graduates, at training, or at networking sessions held by the company with your peers and senior management. They also promote additional training which will help with your development.

MOHAMMED BOLBOLGraduate Civil Engineer, Q6 I consider myself a learner regardless of the situation, moment or company I am in. Ferrovial Agroman offered the most complex and complicated projects as well as giving graduates the chance to take on as much responsibility as they can handle - with guidance and support, of course. To me that sounded like signing up to a life school - the bigger the challenge the bigger the learnings. I am now progressing and thriving with the team support, absorbing as much construction experience as possible.

KARACHI OGBONNAGraduate Quality Engineer, Q6 My initial understanding of Ferrovial Agroman was that it would be a very diverse place to work and the culture is one of hard work and drive to deliver challenging projects to the client’s satisfaction. This has certainly been my experience. The one thing that was surprising was the amount of trust and level of responsibility given to graduates from the start. To succeed you definitely need a passion for what you do and a willingness to get involved, to talk to people across all the departments at all levels to absorb as much knowledge as possible.

SAJA-ROSA MAHTATAudit & Inspection Manager, Silvertown TunnelI decided to join Ferrovial Agroman UK as a graduate Civil Engineer / HSQE Advisor because of the multinational scale of the company. Initially my role at Head Office meant I was responsible for the analytical and management reviews side of my department, and I quickly broadened my field of work within the business. I applied and coordinated applications for competition and awards that represented and showcased our innovative ways of working and best practices. I got to work with our HR department in developing two graduate programmes and procedures for our H&S and Environment graduates.

I had the opportunity to work on bids and tenders alongside experienced and knowledgeable directors and engineers. The biggest project I worked on was the Silvertown Tunnel tender, as part of my development strategy after we were awarded the contract, I have gone on to the project to be able to deliver on the elements that I was part of creating.

I couldn’t be happier with the experience I have gained over the past three years and I’m most of all grateful that I have a clear vision on where I want my career to head and I know that I will always be supported throughout it just like I was on my first day of joining.

NIKITA KHARELGraduate Civil Engineer – Farringdon Station, CrossrailI have been working at Ferrovial Agroman for over a year as a graduate civil engineer. I am currently working on the Crossrail project at Farringdon. My first experience being on site has been amazing and I have had many opportunities given to me by Ferrovial Agroman which has helped me to develop my skills and put them to good use on site. Ferrovial Agroman has provided me with many training opportunities which have helped me develop my skills further as a site engineer. Working at Farringdon station, I have had opportunities to work on various items such as managing subcontractors, working on handback packages and setting out on site and planning and managing works.
