QUESTION: ANALYSE CRITCALLY THE
PERFORMANCE OF PRIVATE TV CHANNELS IN
PAKISTAN WITH EXAMPLES.
Before 2000, tv channels were limited to the
State-run PTV, PTV World and Channel 3, but a
newly-introduced open media policy caused
many new private channels to spring up over
the years. These initially stole away nearly all
of the PTV-Network market while the initial
hype lasted, but soon audiences were shunning
even these channels for lack of quality.
Media and Judiciary are two independentpillars to save the country from suddenslippage.judiciary put down number of good decisions inher little age of independence which is only one
year.Whereas media is older than judiciary and itshows no positive alterations in people'sattitude towards the ridiculous change.

Hence we can say that in Pakistan theresponsibility of media is much more than anymedia in the world, because Pakistan needs abig change and only media is now, as muchpowerful.
When the electronic media boom occurred in
Pakistan, there was a severe lack of qualified
manpower; anchors, experts and techniciansfrom the state-owned PTV provided the bulk of
this manpower, as many people left PTV to join
a financially more lucrative private media. On
the other hand, as the existing major media
houses opened their own TV channels, journalists from the print media joined these
stations. The wave of young people who
comprised the initial bulk of reporters and
journalists joined the media straight out of
universities, having little or no practicalexperience. Therefore, from its very inception
the electronic media was functioning with many

handicaps that were reflected in their
transmissions.
A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE ROLE PLAYEDBY THE PRIVATE TV CHANNELS IN
PAKISTAN.
The media is a double-edged sword; it can work
positively as well as negatively. Through the
use of innovative techniques and newtechnologies such as the 'sound bites' -- that is
the out of context use of words -- the media has
complete leverage over what to show and how
to show it, thus undermining the authenticity of
the reporting event. Investigative reporting inthe print media is another tool to highlight the
different angle of a particular event or story.
Through these techniques certain sections of
the media have blackmailed individuals,
business groups, politicians and governmentofficials. However, in certain cases the
investigative reporting has been very effective
in highlighting wrong doings. There are two

important examples; one was the 'Farh Dogar
Case' in which the daughter of the former Chief
Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan wasgiven extra marks by the Federal Board of
Education in Islamabad that allowed her to
qualify for admission to medical school. Another
was the 'Rental Power Projects' that exposed
the present government's purchase of electricity
at inflated prices that ultimately translated into
higher electricity prices for consumers.
In its positive role, the media is an important
source of information and news. What happens
around the world is shown right on the TVscreens. The new-found role of media has also
provided it a chance to create social and
political awareness among the masses, thus
making people aware of their social, economic
and political rights. It scrutinizes thegovernment working both in domestic and
foreign affairs, and as such is a watchdog over
the government policies. Moreover, media has

become a full-fledged industry and an important
source of revenue. Since 2002, $2.5 billion had
been invested in the media industry. The printand electronic media together earn around $2.5
billion (Rs.20 billion) every year, with a 40 to 60
ratio from the advertisement, while the industry
as a whole provides employment to over
150,000 people.
On the other hand, due to intense competition
to break the news first, media often resort to
sensationalism; without confirming the news
and event, it flashes the news and starts
discussion, thus creating unseen fears andpanic. Today, popular TV anchors such as Dr.
Shahid Masud (previously of Geo, now with
ARY), Kamran Khan (Geo) Hamid Mir (Geo),
Javaid Chaudhry (Express), Kashif Abassi
(ARY) discuss, analyse and scrutinisegovernment policies. They set the agenda and
they form the public opinion. These anchors
discuss and debate major political issues in

their prime-time broadcasts (8-10 pm), when
most of the people are glued to their TV sets.
Therefore, a handful of 5-6 TV anchorsdominate the public policy debate, often
promoting sensationalism based on
ungrounded speculations and unfounded
theories. However, some anchors such as
Najam Sethi (Dunya News, now Geo), Talat
Hussain (AJJ News, now Dawn News) and
Moueed Pirzada (Dunya News) are more
balanced and suggestive to government
policies. Another confusing trend by the
anchors is the switching over from one TV
channel to another, which often smacks ofunprofessionalism and creates doubts in the
public mind about their credibility. Therefore,
the media in Pakistan plays both a positive and
negative role. Whether this role will be more
effective and constructive in shaping the nationwill depend on the level of maturity, experience,
professionalism and training in the media.

approaches. Therefore media is cautious indebating on such sensitive issues by big groupsis also obstructing the expansion of smallerchannels. The government indirectly restricts media bywithholding advertisements PAMERA havefrequently threatened to cancel the license. Also other government agencies pressurize. The political issues are so debated that other
social, religious and psychological aspects arenot properly addressed. Though the media asan institution enjoys enormous power andinfluence, media organizations are not charityhouses: they operate as businesses and havecommercial interests. There is a natural
tendency to indulge in corruption andmalpractice when an institution enjoys absolutepower, particularly in the absence of a strongsystem of accountability.
The Government verses Media

Our country is rapidly drifting towardsdestruction due to the ever-increasingcorruption andpoor governance.Since independence, corruption andmismanagement have become common norms. Now media has to work hard to sweep the dirt.As a result, the government considers it ashumiliation and defeat. The anchors like
Kamran khan, Dr Shahid Masood, HamidMir,luqman Mubasher, Talat Hussain etc. havesuccessfully criticized missing people, steelmillscase, Kerry Lugar bill, NRO, rentalprojectors, victimization by members of theassembliesand the inside stories of DEALS with
each other. This government has no ability or a morallyupright resource to take cognizance of it;ourattorney-general has resigned due tocorruption charges, the minister forparliamentary affairshas been named in a
corruption case involving tens of million rupeesand it is needless tomention the conduct of ourex-chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar.

The banning of Meray Mutabiq is unacceptableto 170 million Pakistanis who believe in thefreedom of speech. This is an attack on freespeech and the media by the current regimewhich must be resisted. Dr Shahid Masood hasbeen bringing the facts before the nation. He isa professional journalist and must be allowed tocontinue his show.Sensationalism in the Media
What is sensationalism? Dog bites Man. This isold news. We already know the outcome.Manbites Dog. This is sensationalism: it immediatelystirs the listeners mind and is the cause forgreat hype. The dramatic background music, images of
clashes between security officials and civilians, and riots all form a part of sensationalism, enticing the viewer to turn on the television set.Whatever the truth, does not matter, televisionis selling, making money and that is the truemotive.
On the other hand the growing trend inbroadcast media for attracting anchors onheavy remunerations, anchors who possess

skills of creating sensationalism and who spicenews with hypothesis, is an example of howmedia channels are departing from objectivityand balanced reporting.Furthermore, the frequent switching of anchorsfrom one channel to another mainly foreconomic gains in utter disregard of the basicethos of the journalistic profession alsosupports the argument that broadcast media in
Pakistan is headed for over-commercialization.These channels sometimes most of the timehave been guilty of over-doing things with theirmoment-by-moment commentary. Give themsome time (a decade at least!), theyll matureover time.
Also they would just cut anybody, a politicianwould be there talking and they will cut him inthe middle saying buhat buhat shukriya app ka.During the Lal masjid episode she even oncesaid to DG ISPR app qaum ko koi peghamdena
chahin ge. he said, BB main yahan apni duty deraha hoon, qaum ko pegham dene nahin aya.The claim of Sub se pehley has started a madrace.

The media has realized its power and ability topenetrate an innocent mind and they areexercising it so savagely. The private channels are owned by biginvestors with a purpose to enhance business. They have to afford massive expenses, so,competition to excel others makes themirresponsible. In In order to attract more viewship and resultantly more commercials-they
even sometimes forget the damage caused tonational interest.A bold and blunt anchor person undermines theset standards. The petty events are heightened.Tiny is made mighty and vice versa-on thegrounds of personal grudges or at the behest of
the owners.
Moreover still, the mood of the public is not asmature as in the strong democracies due tolack of education and weak sociopolitical andcultural norms.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the proliferation of privatetelevision channels has had a positive impactin three important dimensions. It has led to
the creation of a niche for alternative dramasand has broken the rigidity of religious shows;it has played a major role in opening up of thepolitical debate in Pakistans electronicmedia; and it has benefited both theelectronic media and advertising industrythrough revenue generation.
Over the years, the Pakistani media hasseen many ups and downs in its growth
and progress but the media boom in the
beginning of 21st century has presentedtremendous opportunities and challenges. In its very brief life of just 8 years, private electronic media has played animportant and effective role in nationalpolitics. From opposing the black laws
and media restrictions of thegovernments to the restoration of theChief Justice of Pakistan, it has beenbold, proactive, vibrant and penetrative

both for the government and public. However, it is still young and lacksprofessional training, maturity andresponsibility. Nonetheless, given itspotential role, it would be an importantsource of positive and constructive socio-
economic and political change in thecountry.
This is an era of satellite televisions, internetconnectivity, and mobile telephony. To summarize, media can help stabilize andstrengthen the country by playing educational
and informative role and by impartingknowledge to the masses as knowledge ispower and only a well-informed society candevelop a positive approach towards fife. The objective of media freedom can be realizedonly when public trust and confidence reposed
in the media is respected and protected by themedia itself by acting as a true watchdog, keeping an eye on the government on behalf ofthe public.
