Dear Brothers and Sisters,In the Gospel last week, we read about Jesus in the synagogue on the Sabbath. People went to the synagogue on the Sabbath, just as we come to Mass on Sundays, for communal worship of God. Jesus was giving us an example. He was telling us that it is good to come together and worship.Last week Jesus upset some people by healing a man. He was showing us that the stuff of our lives, our distractions and anxieties, belong right there in the place of worship. We don’t need to hide that stuff or pretend it’s not there when we come to Mass, because that stuff, our stuff, is just what Mass is for. God wants to be with us through all of it.This week Jesus also gives us an example, and again, His example upsets some people. This time, He goes off by Himself and prays. People were looking for Him. They wanted Him to spend more time in their town. But Jesus needed time to quietly pray. Last week, He showed us that communal prayer - Sunday Mass - can be an occasion when all are welcome. We can’t really expect that experience to be completely quiet and focused. Yet, we do need that kind of uninterrupted solitary time with God. Jesus gives us that representation this week.Do you pray? Do you set aside some time everyday for just you and God? There is a saying that is often attributed to Zen Buddhists, but is actually more accurately attributed to St. Francis de Sales. He says that everyone needs to spend at least half an hour a day in mental prayer with God, unless you are very busy. If you are very busy, you need to spend an hour a day in mental prayer! With all that we have to do each day, I know it’s not easy to set aside time for God. But honestly, that can easily be a cop out too. So do you pray? There is a song called “Oh Lord” by the artist NF that I think maybe I’ve talked to you about before. There is a line in the song where NF sings: When ya healthy, we don’t really care for Him then. Leave me alone God. I’ll call you when I need you again. Which is funny, everyone will sleep in the pews then blame God for our problems like He’s sleeping on you. We turn our backs on him, what do you expect Him to do. It’s hard to answer prayers when nobody’s praying to you.Should you pray everyday? You know the answer. Can you pray everyday? If you make a commitment you can. You might even want to Google St. Francis de Sales for some good advice about ways to do it. But now,the big question is: Do you pray everyday? Will you?Peace and Love,Fr. Matt

We’re reading St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians these days. What was the town of Corinth like? It was a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul’s day it was a wealthy city with inhabitants from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul’s heart; he wrote to them sometimes “with

many tears” (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There’s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. The glory of the city Paul knew has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. ~ By the Rev. James Field

THE SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to “help our neighbor in their spiritual needs”.

COUNSELING THE DOUBTFULEveryone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way.

INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANTLearn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith.

ADMONISHING THE SINNERDo not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ.

COMFORTING THE SORROWFULBe open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren’t sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference.

FORGIVING INJURIESForgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God’s limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God.

BEARING WRONGS PATIENTLYDo not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit.

PRAYING FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEADPrayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God’s care.

THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They “are chari-table actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs”. They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.

FEED THE HUNGRYThere are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources.

GIVE DRINK TO THE THIRSTYMany of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working toward greater accessibility of this essential resource.

SHELTER THE HOMELESSThere are many circumstances that could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face.

VISIT THE SICKThose who are sick are often forgotten or avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer to those who take the time to visit and comfort them.

VISIT THE PRISONERSPeople in prison are still people, made in the image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they deserve the opportunity to hear the Word of God and find the Truth of the message of Christ.

BURY THE DEADFunerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who mourn.

GIVE ALMS TO THE POORDonate money to organizations that have the ability to provide support and services for those in need. Do research and find organizations that put people in need first, rather than profit.

For powerful suggestions on how to LIVE these Works of Mercy, log onto: http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/new-evan-gelization/jubilee-of-mercy/the-corporal-spiritual-works-of-mercy.cfm

Mercy is caring for the needs of people’s minds, hearts and lives. It means to share in God’s forgiveness and love.
