Skill Level: Confident Beginner Finished Quilt Size: 70 1/2" x 70 1/2"

Please read all instructions before beginning. Pre-washing NOT recommended.

WOF is 42" width of fabric from selvedge edge to selvedge edge.

LOF is length of fabric, parallel to the selvedge edges.

Remove as little fabric as possible when trimming selvedges and squaring strip ends.

1 Butterfly black panel • Fussy-cut (4) 16" squares, keeping the frame even

on all sides.

2 yards floral stripe • 4 LOF black floral strips 10" x 70", beginning 3/4" out from the rainbow curls stripe on 1 edge

and cutting 10" over as shown.

1 yard rainbow flower print • 2 strips 3" x WOF; cut into (2) 3" x 18 1/2" sash

strips and (1) 3” x 39” sash strip. • 12 strips 1 3/4" x WOF for framing and outer border.

2 yards black solid • 4 strips 1 3/4" x WOF; cut into (8) 1 3/4" x 18 1/2"

strips. • 4 strips 1 3/4" x WOF; cut into (8) 1 3/4" x 16" strips. • 6 strips 2 3/4" x WOF for inner border. • 8 strips 2" x WOF for outer border. • 8 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding.

5 yards of 42" backing fabric • 2 strips 84" x WOF OR 2 1/2 yards wide backing fabric • 1 piece 84" x 84"

Batting • 1 piece 84" x 84"

Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press all seams as directed.

1. Sew a 1 3/4" x 16" black strip to the sides of each panel square. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch a 1 3/4" x 18 1/2" black strip to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips. Repeat to make a total of (4) Butterfly blocks.

Refer to the exploded quilt diagram on the next page throughout the following steps.

1. Sew a 3" x 18 1/2" floral sash strip between (2) Butterfly blocks to make the 18 1/2" x 39" row 1. Press seams toward the sash strip. Repeat to make row 2.

2. Sew the 3” x 39” floral sash strip between the two rows of blocks to make the 39” x 39” quilt center. Press

seams toward the sash strip.

3. Trim (2) of the 1 3/4” x WOF rainbow flower print strips to a length of 39” and (2) rainbow flower print strips to a length of 41 1/2". Stitch the shorter strips to the sides of the quilt center and the longer strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.

4. Trim (2) of the 2 3/4" x WOF black strips to a length of 41 1/2". Sew the remaining (3) 2 3/4” x WOF black

strips short ends together to make one long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into 2 strips 46". Stitch the shorter strips to the sides of the quilt center and the longer strips to the top and bottom to complete the framed center. Press seams toward the strips.

5. Center and stitch a 10" x 70" floral stripe strip to opposite sides of the quilt center, beginning, ending and locking stitches 1/4" from the corners of the quilt center. Repeat with the 10" x 70" strips on the top and bottom edges. Miter corners using your favorite method, checking to be sure that the stripe sections match and all corners lie flat. Trim mitered corner seams to 1/4" and press open. Press border seams toward the border strips.

6. In the same manner as step 4, join the 2" x WOF black strips; cut into (2) each 65" and 68" strips. Stitch the shorter strips to the sides of the quilt center and the longer strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.

7. Again, in the same manner as step 4, join the remaining (8) 1 3/4" x WOF rainbow floral print strips short

ends together to make one long strip. Press seams to one side. Cut into 2 strips each 68” and 70 1/2". Stitch the shorter strips to the sides of the quilt center and the longer strips to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top. Press seams toward the strips.

8. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long

edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim to make the 84" x 84" backing piece.

9. Layer the quilt top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the top.

10. Join the black solid binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip. Press seams open. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together. Bind the quilt edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
