1 Pins and Needles from the President Hello Ladies. Even though by the time you receive this the holidays will be over, as I sit here I am wishing you the happiest Christmas and New Year ever. I pray for health and prosperity to each of you and your families, too. Some of you have had some real challenges this year with health issues as well as well as with some of your family. I sincerely pray 2018 will be better. With the Bonnie Hunter class this month, added to my cold, I have to confess that I’ve been rushed to get things done. And for those who noticed, I’ve been completely in a fog. Eek! But, no fear, what needs to be done is and what isn’t can wait. Right? This year has been a good year with lots of happenings personally and for the guild. My great grand babies came to visit. Oh, how I loved that. They are so sweet. And for those who took the Bonnie Hunter class, wasn’t that fun?! Thirty-Six (36) signed up for the class so we had a full house. I love the Winston venue. It was so bright and warm, if at times a little too warm. Our teacher made the rounds in the room making sure everyone was encouraged and helped. The highlight of the day had to be Corinne’s, Marley Woodward, who made a lovely Sisters Choice block and shared a beautiful quilt she had made and quilted herself. Bonnie has shared Marley’s picture and quilt on several of her posts. You should check it out at Quiltville.com. January is right back at it with guild meetings and a class by Violet Craft, which by the way, still has room if you are interested in taking the class. It is paper piecing but many of the pieces are large and there should be (I’m trusting in this) many helping hands. I stopped by the quilt shop and got some help with fabric choices. I really appreciate those of you who are so willing to offer help and advice. As with Bonnie H. class if you wish to do a project other than Mt. Hood, Violet has given permission to choose a pattern of your choice. Pins and Needles from the President

Hello Ladies. Even though by the time you receive this the holidays will

be over, as I sit here I am wishing you the happiest Christmas and New Year

ever. I pray for health and prosperity to each of you and your families, too.

Some of you have had some real challenges this year with health issues as

well as well as with some of your family. I sincerely pray 2018 will be better.

With the Bonnie Hunter class this month, added to my cold, I have to

confess that I’ve been rushed to get things done. And for those who noticed,

I’ve been completely in a fog. Eek! But, no fear, what needs to be done is

and what isn’t can wait. Right?

This year has been a good year with lots of happenings personally and

for the guild. My great grand babies came to visit. Oh, how I loved that.

They are so sweet. And for those who took the Bonnie Hunter class, wasn’t

that fun?! Thirty-Six (36) signed up for the class so we had a full house. I

love the Winston venue. It was so bright and warm, if at times a little too

warm. Our teacher made the rounds in the room making sure everyone was

encouraged and helped. The highlight of the day had to be Corinne’s,

Marley Woodward, who made a lovely Sisters Choice block and shared a

beautiful quilt she had made and quilted herself. Bonnie has shared

Marley’s picture and quilt on several of her posts. You should check it out at

Quiltville.com.

January is right back at it with guild meetings and a class by Violet Craft,

which by the way, still has room if you are interested in taking the class. It is

paper piecing but many of the pieces are large and there should be (I’m

trusting in this) many helping hands. I stopped by the quilt shop and got

some help with fabric choices. I really appreciate those of you who are so

willing to offer help and advice. As with Bonnie H. class if you wish to do a

project other than Mt. Hood, Violet has given permission to choose a

pattern of your choice.

LET’S COLOR TOGETHER!

Oh, Right, Black and White.

Black withholds the light and White beams

from it, opposite sides of the spectrum of

color, provides definitive contrast with lines

that represent modern design elements. The

stark contrast between the two are like ying

and yang.

OH! The possibilities!

FROM THE EVENING CHAIR

It’s 2018! As many recover from December project deadline and holiday activities, we are also thinking ahead to our quilts for the new year. Some of you are much more realistic than I am in estimating what we can get done in the time available, which I find admirable. If you’re a resolution maker, here are a few of my quilting resolutions for 2018.

Post a list of all UFO’s in my “activity” room to encourage completing some of those this year. (I do love checking things off a list.)

Shop my stash and use some of those beautiful fabrics I love.

Complete the re-organization in my room to better access what I have.

Increase participation in Community Quilts. More important than any of these is People Before Projects. I’ve adopted this since retirement because it isn’t necessarily my nature. Our family and friends treasure the gifts we make for them, but I believe they treasure the time we spend with them at least as much, if not more. This can be sewing with friends, sharing a skill or teaching a family member or friend how to sew or quilt. It can also be taking a break from a project to hang out with someone who needs our attention. Many of you do this naturally, and you’re a great encouragement. I’m looking forward to quilting and hanging out with you in 2018.

Pins and Needles from the President (continued)

Remember, the Let’s Color Together color for January is Black and White. Bring your fat quarters

and make something interesting with black and white.

Refreshments: Please remember as we don’t have a Kitchen Chair, those with last names

beginning with L—N are to bring refreshments and have kitchen clean-up duty afterwards. Thank

you.

I would also remind you to set aside the third Tuesday, Sew Day, for Stitch and Sew Emporium

stitching. Patti R. has told us she will have projects for us.

Violet Craft will have trunk shows at the evening and day meetings. I would also remind you to

come early (5:30 pm evening; 9:15 am day), if you want a longer social time.

Working together on our Friendship Quilt,

Donna

Community Quilts:

In talking with Joan S., she has some

interesting stories of how our quilts are being

used to help the children in our community.

Stories that reinforce that the quilts and the

efforts we put into them, make them not just

‘blankets’ but tools to bless, encourage and

teach while they also keep them warm and

tell them they matter and someone cars.

We also learned from Battered Persons

Advocacy that our efforts are so valuable

that there are others in the community who

are willing to dollar match the value of the

quilts donated. We have been asked and will

consider, a one-time donation of a full size

quilt, for their auction. If making a full size

quilt for them is something you would

personally like to consider, please let me

know. A Footnote is that the guild has a quilt

we could donate. So let me know your

thoughts. We are involved with many

organizations now and there is some feeling

we are spread too thin, that taking their

auction on as on-going project may not be

something to take on at this time. But as a

one-time offering or as quilts and time allow.

Perhaps. Again. Your thoughts.

Joan continues to work hard getting

quilts ready and delivering them. Tell her

thank you, if you get an opportunity.

A seating arrangement map will be available

at the January meetings. We will also be

sending out an information page via e-mail.

There will be some printed copies on the

January sew day for those who don’t have

internet access.

Don’t forget your challenge fabric project.

Reminder, the project will be donated to the

The Umpqua Valley Quilter’s

Guild was established in 1982.

An evening group began

meeting in 2000. The meetings

are held at 10:00am on the

first and third Tuesday of each

month. An additional meeting

is held at 6:00pm on the first

Monday of each month. Both

meetings are held from

September through June.

Check the calendar for

additional dates, times and

special events.

The purpose of the UVQG is to

promote the joy of quilting as a

creative expression and an art

form. The meetings are a time

set aside to learn more about

the history of quilting, explore

new quilting techniques, and

share the joy of quilt making

with the community. The guild

is a 501-C-4 nonprofit

organization.
