We believe our friends and sandal makers at Sseko Designs have said it best. They hope to inspire customers to see more in their sandals than a “lifeless product on a shelf”, but rather to “see the lives and dreams of the hands who made them.”

Lives and dreams of inspiring young women like Mercy.

“If I have a skill, then I can use my skill to live.” Mercy, Sseko Graduate

Dear Potential Donor,

At the center of Mustard Seed is relationships, we work every day to connect with our customers, the Columbia community and our producer groups. By focusing on relationships we provide more than just a store with a shopping alternative. We are inspiring consumers to share the heart of our mission, creating a network of individuals and organizations who are embracing the vision of fair trade. Throughout our early years, we have mastered the fine art of accomplishing much with very little. We launched our vision for Mustard Seed with only 60% of the necessary funds. Despite this deficit in ini-tial funding, we have experience remarkable growth. However, our ability to sustain that growth over the long and short term has been crippled by the low base inventory we started with. Compelled by stories like Mercy’s and a desire to continue providing opportunity where once none existed, we have launched a new fundraising campaign.

We ask you to be an even bigger part of this story; contribute to our Feed the Seed campaign so that Mustard Seed can continue to support programs like Sseko Designs. With Your donation of $100, $500. $1,000, or a monetary amount of your choice will allow us to first, increase our base inventory to sustainable levels and second, increase the varying selection of products available for purchase.

meet mercy. Among the brightest and most committed young women

in Uganda, Mercy graduated from secondary school with ambitions of a higher education, a career, travel, and more.

However, like many of her peers, going to university was a dream financially out of reach. The struggle to find

employment was a disheartening obstacle that was all too familiar for young women seeking opportunity within

impoverished societies.

enter sseko.A world apart, a midwestern college graduate abandoned

the dailiy grind for an “outlandish adventure to another land” that would soon become the opportunity Mercy so des-

perately yearned for. In 2009, Liz Bohannon (adventurer turned micro entrepreneur) founded Sseko Designs, LLC- a not-just-for-profit company that bridges the gap between

ability and opportunity for women in Uganda.
