Why They Can’t “Just Quit”

5

Nicotine addiction often requires repeated attempts to overcome.

Only 4-7% of smokers are able to quit on their own.

Addiction to tobacco use is physical, behavioral, and psychological.

Nicotine is as addictive as heroin, 1000 times more potent than alcohol, and 5-10 times more potent than cocaine.

Health Benefits of Quitting

6

If your last cigarette was: These are some of the changes you may experience:

20 minutes ago Heart rate drops to normal

12 hours ago Carbon monoxide level in bloodstream drops to normal

2 weeks to 3 months ago Heart attack risk begins to drop and lung function begins to improve

1 to 9 months ago Coughing and shortness of breath decrease

1 year ago Added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's

5 to 15 years ago Stroke risk is reduced to that of a non-smoker's

10 years ago Lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker's; risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas decreases

15 years ago Risk of coronary heart disease is back to that of a non-smoker's

Some people feel they have smoked too long to benefit from quitting. Others feel they haven’t smoked enough to be at risk. No matter how long you have smoked, there is good news- You will be healthier starting the minute that you quit.

A Group Health Member Said:"I am about to finish the chantix, and I know I won’t be smoking ever again! I really appreciate all your help with the medication and the support. I couldn’t have done it without you!“

"The little booklet you sent out was incredibly helpful“

“Because I feel like the counselors are good. They call you. The medication support is good, like with the chantix or whatever you want to use.”

A Uniform Medical Plan Member Said:“I have been quit for 26 days and you guys have been way more supportive than even my doctor.“

“Because it's free phone support that you can call in anytime. And that was really helpful for me. I really liked getting gum, those were really helpful. Having the support and structure of the quit date.”

“Because it was an opinion that was unbiased, and they gave me a lot of tips with my triggers that on one else had been able to help with.”
