Quotes CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

“The performance is so good that the applause lasted longer and louder. From time to time, I closed my eyes to
appreciate the beautiful music. To be honest with you, BYU Orchestra is the world class orchestra.”
Peter He, China
“The BYU Chamber Orchestra demonstrates what the Hawkshaw Foundation is all about. It proves there is
exceptional talent in our young people when they are given a chance, both in the UK and the USA. The future of our
orchestras need not diminish when we have the talent out there.”
Alan Hawkshaw, Radlett, England
“The concert was wonderful. The students were all so nice...and everyone that came were absolutely delighted. All
of my students that attended were inspired and highly motivated by the experience because it gave them a glimpse of
what they can work toward.”
Cybele D’Ambrosio, guest musician, Taranto, Italy
“I don’t know how we will ever be able to thank you and BYU for sending us such a great group of young men and
women. Everyone has been raving about them ever since they performed at the Barclay Theatre. I have heard
comments on what great musicians they are and how “clean and wholesome” they looked. The president of the
Orange Symphony Orchestra said they perform equal to most mid-sized city philharmonic orchestras, and, in fact, are
better than most. He went on to say he thinks ‘they are the finest university orchestra he had ever heard’.”
Ed Griffith, Irvine, California
“The orchestra members were gracious, extremely talented, and were orderly, respectful and followed the
suggestions of the house manager….Kory Katseanes is a superb conductor. His cues were explicit, and the orchestra
followed them to a ‘t’.”
Harold Knight, CEO of Live From the Plaza, Thousand Oaks, California
“The concert of BYU Chamber Orchestra in the Big Hall of the [Moscow] Conservatory was wonderful and
successful. The program was very original and Symphony No. 2, by BYU faculty member Murray Boren, was of
great interest to the Russian public. I like very much conductor Kory Katseanes—he is a professional of high level.”
Gennady Dziubenko, pianist husband of Moscow Conservatory faculty member, Moscow, Russia
“The Orchestra played wonderfully, and the audience was most lavish in applause, standing and clapping with the
rhythmic clapping so common here as a sign of approval.”
President Wilfried M. Voge, Kiev, Ukraine

Brigham Young University’s Chamber Orchestra plays an expansive variety of classical music, including
traditional orchestral works for small orchestra.
The musical group is currently preparing for their spring 2014 Tour to Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and
Turkey.
The Chamber Orchestra is conducted by Professor Kory Katseanes. He is currently Director of the BYU School
of Music, as well as Director of Orchestras within the School of Music, overseeing the orchestral program that
accommodates nearly 450 students enrolled in the five university orchestras. He also directs the graduate
orchestral conducting program. Professor Katseanes also served as Assistant Conductor of the Utah Symphony
from 1987 to 2002.
The ensemble consists of 45 musicians, including string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. Members,
ranging between the ages of 18 and 27, come from all parts of the United States. Most are pursuing professional
degrees in music performance or education.
Chamber musicians follow a demanding schedule which includes the preparation of their campus concerts during
the academic year (September to April) on the university campus, in addition to regional and international tours.
In the spring of 2011, the orchestra visited China, performing in the annual Meet in Beijing Arts Festival. They
combined with the Beijing Dance Academy, as well as with orchestras from four universities in China for
concerts and workshops.
The orchestra traveled to the Pacific Northwest in May 2009, giving 5 concerts in Idaho and Oregon.
The group was presented in the famous Carnegie Hall, as well as in many other performance locations throughout
the historic eastern United States cities in a tour in May 2008.
In May 2006, the Chamber Orchestra took their repertoire to England, Wales, and Scotland.
In February 2002 the Chamber Orchestra, as part of the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra, recorded music for the
Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, and also performed two concerts
at that time.
The Orchestra has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, China, Egypt, Israel, and Jordan.
The Chamber Orchestra originates in the School of Music in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at
Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. BYU is one of the nation’s largest private universities with an
enrollment of 30,000 students from throughout the United States and 120 foreign countries.
