HappeningsWe had lots of fun at the Paint & Pour on Friday night and the Knight Out Dinner on Saturday. We’ve sold out our bus for the November 18 beatification of Fr. Solanus Casey. We have some cabins still available for our January 2018 Southern Caribbean cruise. We continue to collect bottles and cans for our World Youth Day pilgrims who’ll travel to Panama in January 2019 to meet Pope Francis. We are a parish with many opportunities to be involved, get involved and encounter your fellow members of our faith family. The Connection always has an ample listing of needs for you to apply your time, talent and treasure. I invite and encourage you to do more and BE MORE in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Liturgical Ministers DayAll who serve in any liturgical ministry will be invited to this gathering on the morning of Saturday, November 11. We’ll have a keynote speaker and breakout sessions for input and updates. This is a perfect time since we begin a new liturgical year at the end of November. Coming Soon: A One-Woman PlayOn Sunday, November 19 at 4pm, St Cyprian will again be a patron of the arts by presenting. “Rooted in Love: One Woman Play.” In the play, Sr. Nancy Murray, OP, (the sister of comedian Bill Murray) brings the story of the life and martyrdom of Sr.

Dorothy Stang, SND to the stage. This event is free but a freewill offering will be taken. Come hear her story and be inspired by Sr. Dorothy Stang’s courage, her moral compass and her fierce passion for justice and human rights. In February 2005, Sr. Dorothy Stang, a Sister of Notre Dame, was shot and killed by hired gunmen as she walked along a dirt road in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. Her death had been arranged by influential Brazilian landowners who wanted to stop her work on behalf of farming families in the region. It was Sr. Dorothy’s dream for the people to live self-sufficient lives, and to be able to use the land in sustainable ways. The native of Dayton, Ohio, had been visiting with some of the struggling farmers in the interior when she was killed. She was 73, and had given nearly 40 years of her life to the fight for the rights of the poor. Now, twelve years later, dioceses and parishes in the U.S. pause to remember Sr. Dorothy’s work in this country, and to celebrate the progress being made in Brazil through the continuing work of the Sisters of Notre Dame, activists and “Dot’s people.” Mark your calendar now for this great opportunity to learn about and grow in appreciation of Sr. Dorothy’s sacrifice and the church’s ministry in Brazil. Mercy in ActionA Day of Service at St. CyprianCatholic Charities of Southeast Michigan is delighted to collaborate with parish Christian Service and volunteers throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit for our second annual Mercy in Action Day of Service.

Mercy in Action volunteers will be providing corporal and spiritual works of mercy. We are united as one in Christ and bring love, mercy and compassion to all people.

This year St. Cyprian will be hosting a Mercy in Action event on Wednesday, October 18th from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. A lunch and a free t shirt will be provided to all who participate. The Christian Service Commission along with our St. Cyprian Crafters will be hosting this event. Come make comfort lap pads for the Madison Center in Wyandotte for students from ages 3 to 24 years old. No sewing experience needed. If you cannot attend this event, you are welcome to come get the supplies and make them at home and return them to Kim Switzer. Please come and share in this event to serve others. Red Cross Blood DriveOur hearts and prayers go out to all who are suffering. Please come and donate blood for those in need.

St. Cyprian will host the Red Cross Blood Drive on Sunday, October 29th. By sacrificing our own blood, we can bring new life to others. The drive will take place from 8 am to 2 pm in the Social Hall. You can sign-up online as you have in the past or in the gathering space before and after all masses on October 14/15 and October 21/22.

The Red Cross is now offering RapidPass. RapidPass allows you to start the blood donation process from the comfort of your home and save time at the donation site. The process is simple: just visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass, read the information and complete the questions online, then print your RapidPass and bring it with you or show it on your mobile device. This way you don’t have to read the booklet and answer the questions at the donation site so the process can flow more smoothly. The RapidPass must be done the day of the drive. So give it a try!

Halloween Ministry Sacred Heart Major Seminary It’s that time of the year again! Halloween is just around the corner, and Sacred Heart Major Seminary needs your help. Each year the seminary community opens their doors and their hearts to over 2000 children from the surrounding Detroit neighborhood so that the kids can have a fun and safe place to play games and trick-or-treat. But they need your help to make this year a success! They are asking for donations of Halloween candy that will then be passed out to the many kids. If you are willing to

participate in this important ministry by donating bags of candy you can bring them to the parish office or there is a box in the gathering space in church.

Our RCIA Journey Develops We’re continuing our RCIA journey as seekers of Christ and have begun to experience formation and teaching together. Currently we have two candidates who are seeking to discover more about the call of God on their lives and how they can draw deeper into relationship with Christ and His Church. Please keep these candidates and their sponsors in your prayers and ask God to continue to call forth many more people to respond to His invitation. Why Does RCIA Take So Long? RCIA cannot be reduced to the mere transference of knowledge. The courses are not academic in the sense that they represent a series of topics that must be studied in order to graduate into Catholicism. RCIA must be primari-ly a formative process rather than simply an informative one. The stress on formation over information is due the fact RCIA is introducing you to Jesus Christ. Truth cannot be reduced to a concept but is rather a person—the per-son of Jesus Christ; and, just as it takes time for an individual to be formed in a relationship with a friend or spouse, it takes time to understand the person of Jesus Christ. Moreover, you cannot love that which you do not know. We must come to know Christ in order to love him. As such, we must allow ourselves to be formed by the teachings of Christ, the knowledge of Christ, in order that our hearts may be able to make a true commitment to Jesus Christ. -© St. Peter’s List, 2017

St. Cyprian Parish has a dedicated group of people who pray for the needs of parishioners. How does it work? If you need prayers for a particular reason (health, peace of mind, financial problems, etc.) you call the parish office at 734 283-1366 ext. 110 and tell me or Sue that you would like to be put on the prayer chain and give us a brief reason for the request so that the prayer team can pray for your specific needs.

We are also looking for more people to pray for our parish. If you like to pray for the needs of others you can sign up to be on our prayer team by calling the office and letting us know that you are willing to get a phone call with a request to pray for someone and then calling the next prayer chain team member and forwarding the message that you received. Being a member of the Prayer Chain is a beautiful ministry for people who want to minister right from their home —you can do it whether you are home bound or out working.

St. Cyprian Book Club In October we will be reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. This book tells the story of two teenagers during World War II, one a blind girl in Nazi-occupied France, the other a German orphan boy pressed into service by the Nazi army and how their paths collide as they both try to survive the devastation of their worlds crumbling apart.

We will meet on October 25 at 7pm in room 102 at St. Cyprian — the Riverview Library Book Club will be joining us. I am looking forward to a very fun and lively discussion of this book.

Stewardship Thoughts Today’s Scripture passages focus on stewardship. The prophet Isaiah teaches us that God will provide for those who trust in Him. In the parable of the wedding feast in St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus describes God’s invitation to all to join Him in holiness. Sadly, because Jesus invites but never forces, many reject His call. In his Letter to the Philippians, St. Paul is grateful for this generous community’s financial support, granted not out of St. Paul’s needs, but from their own desire to give. God invites us, as Christian stewards, to return the “first fruits” of our labor to Him in gratitude for His abundant blessings. This sacrificial offering pleases God because we forego something in order to give. When challenged with difficult financial circumstances, we should make a leap of faith in our giving and trust that God’s generosity is never outdone. The Biblical practice is to tithe 10 percent to the Lord. To build to that tithe, begin slowly and increase in small increments — 1 percent or less — each year.
