Atonement Theology “Jesus died for our sins.” We hear this expression quite often by people making a connection between salvation from sin and Christ’s crucifixion. In other words, “Jesus died so that I can go to heaven.” This connection between our salvation and the death of Jesus on the cross is often understood through the idea of atonement. Atonement interprets Jesus’ death on the cross as a sacrifice that brings us back into a right relationship with God. In short, “we are saved because of the cross.” The beginnings of this theology are found in New Testament attempts to find meaning in the execution of Jesus as an enemy of the state and one cursed by God. At its core, atonement theology helps us understand how Jesus’ execution relates to our salvation. It can help us understand how we can be at peace with God despite our sin. Yes, Christ died. But he also became human, lived, healed, taught, modeled, and was raised from the dead. And that matters for our salvation, too. All three of today’s readings from Sacred Scripture draw our attention to how Jesus suffered not because of his own offenses, but for the sins of humanity. “He gave his life as an offering for sin” Is 53:10. “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” Heb 4:15. “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink?” Mk 10:37. When someone accepts the punishment deserved by someone else, they atone for that person by taking their place. Jesus atoned for
human sin then and now through his suffering and death, thereby making us eligible for salvation. There are other ways of understanding Jesus’ death, but atonement is the most common because it “makes sense” based on our limited human understanding of things that go beyond our full comprehension.

The RCIA journey to discover Catholicism has been going on for over 6 weeks now for our candidates and sponsors. An introduction to Catholicism, however, is really an introduction to a person, the person of Jesus Christ. As such, learning about Catholicism, about Jesus Christ, is less like a linear academic pursuit and more like the blossoming of a relationship. Just as you would come to know a friend or a spouse, persons come to know Christ and his Church. As the RCIA class goes deeper into discovering the Catholic faith, many foundational concepts will unfold further and help them come to know Jesus Christ, the person, more intimately. Please keep these candidates and their sponsors in your prayers as they journey to the Easter Vigil and full Christian Initiation. May we all also be living witnesses to the joy and blessings of our Catholic faith to them.

Fleece BlanketsPlease join us on November 4, 2018 for the 4th Annual Fleece Blanket making event. We will be in the Social Hall from 4-6pm making blankets for the Karmanos Center, Veterans, Crisis Pregnancy Center and the Homeless. Please bring your fleece in the following sizes (2 pieces are needed for each blanket): Lap size 1 ½ yards, adult blanket 3 yards, child 2 yards, baby 1 yard. We will have some fleece available for those who cannot get their own and we have people who are willing to teach those who have never made a blanket.
We will be providing pizza, pop and chips for all that come. All ages are welcome!

Youth GroupWe will be meeting in the Youth Room located in the basement of the Parish Office building October 21, 6-8pm. All those in 8th grade through High School are welcome. Be there or be bored!!!
Day of Mercy…Kids helping KidsThis past week the 1-5 grade children were given the opportunity to participate in the Archdiocese Day of Mercy. They were asked by our Christian Service Director, Kim Switzer, to stuff the cloth animals, hearts and footballs made by our crafters. They were also asked to make cards. These items along with the books that were collected throughout the month will be packaged together and given to children in various hospitals. This was a wonderful evening for not only the students but the catechists as well. It was amazing to see the children take the time to make beautiful cards knowing that the will be cheering up another child. This was truly a God in Action experience for all.

Confirmation RetreatThe nineteen Confirmation Candidates and 3 parent chaperones attended their retreat at St. Paul of the Cross in Detroit. This is a beautiful facility and our facilitator, MaryLee Becker, was amazing. She is very upbeat and faith filled. Her enthusiasm along with her knowledge of the faith made this a wonderful afternoon for all. The candidates learned what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus and that they have the power to make a difference. They had time to interact as a small and large group, listen and pray. I feel that this was great way to start their faith journey toward Confirmation on March 2, 2019. Please keep all of them in your prayers as they continue to meet over the next few months.

St. CyprianTuition Assistance ProgramWe are now accepting requests for Catholic elementary school tuition assistance for the 2018/19 school year. The awards will be in the amount of $300 per child. Awards will be paid directly to the school upon verification of enrollment and parishioner status as of October 1st annually.
To qualify for a 2018/19 award, you must have been a registered parishioner at St. Cyprian Parish as of April 1, 2018. The definition of “good standing” will be determined by the Pastor or his delegate, but will focus on a parishioner’s commitment to the concepts of good stewardship of time, talent and treasure.
If you are interested in applying for an award, please send a letter of request to: Denise Traeder, Director of Finance & Administration, St. Cyprian Parish, 13249 Pennsylvania Road, Riverview, MI 48193. The request should include the name(s) of the child (children) and the name of the school(s) they are attending. The 2018/19 deadline for requests is November 30, 2018.

Stewardship Thoughts Today, Jesus professes in St. Mark’s Gospel, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant. The Book of the Prophet Isaiah and the Letter to the Hebrews also indicate examples of Christ’s humility for us to model. In other words, glory in God’s Kingdom is not achieved through high status or rank, like the secular world proclaims, but through being a humble servant to all. This includes service to the poor among us. In a spirit of evangelization, expressed through stewardship, we strive to offer our time, talent, and treasure in thanksgiving to God to our parish and other worthy causes. Every parish community is always in need of readers, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Parish Pastoral Council members, Finance Council members, Evangelization and Stewardship Committee members, and school volunteers, to name a few ways to in which we can serve God through the Church. God graces everyone with at least one unique gift to use to build up the Kingdom that no one else can do. To discover your gifts, attend a Called and Gifted seminar in your area.
