Sanjay Ekka was ordained a priest on 28 January 2014 by Most Rev. Paul Lakra, DD, Bishop of Gumla Diocese in Deogaon parish. The parishioners carried the Bishop and Sanjay on a 'Palki' with the traditional beat of

the Nagara up to the parish. The school girls at the entrance were ready to take over for the entrance dance. There were nearly 40 priests including 17 Jesuits priests of our province to witness his ordination. During the Mass , the Bishop quoted the words of Saint John Marie Vianney in his sermon and said – 'Leave a parish for twenty years without a priest and they will end by worshiping the beasts there for a priest is not a priest for himself but he is a priest for you...' Deogaon parish along with his far and near relatives were overjoyed to see their son at the altar. The school children and youth linked their hands together to make the day a memorable one. The choir sang with their hearts on their tongue while the dances added color to the event. Whereas the members of Mahila Sang were active serving the guests throughout the day, Alok and Neelam were there with their camera to capture the event on their lenses.

Soon after the Ordination Mass, Sanjay's family and relatives honored Most Rev. Bishop by presenting the traditional tribal 'Gamcha'.

Then the newly ordained priest was felicitated by the villagers and well wishers. The villagers put up a beautiful skit for Sanjay. The Jamshedpur Jesuits took every one by surprise by singing a scintillating 'Ho' song to wish Sanjay. Fr. Joe Surin, the Delegate of the Provincial, presented a framed photo of Sanjay as a memento to the family, and said ‘We are taking Sanjay with us, but he will be with you always in and through this framed photo.' And in his speech he welcomed and coaxed many young men like Sanjay to join Jamshedpur Province. Banners were displayed and leaflets were distributed to the young men to encourage more youngmen to join the priesthood and religious life from this parish.

O n t h e e v e o f 2 7 January, the Jesuits from J a m s h e d p u r w e r e welcomed to Sanjay's family with traditional drum 'dhank baza' and ' s h a h n a i ' . T h e t w o Sisters from Rengra were welcomed as well. Sanjay introduced his family members to the guests in what we call

such an evening as “meet and greet”. Soon after that he went to the parish to prepare himself spiritually. His uncle, Amrit Kujur, popularly known as 'father mamu' was there to help Sanjay.

- Neelam Sanjeev Kerketta

Anil Ajay Kerketta was ordained a priest on 30 January by Rt. Rev. Bishop Vincent Barwa DD, Bishop of Simdega Diocese, in the presence of about 50 priests at Sa langapose in the p r e m i s e s o f Salangapose primary school. The campus was adorned exquisitely for this auspicious occasion. The ordination ceremony began at 9:00 am where Anil Ajay's brother and sister-in-law

accompanied him to the altar to labour for the Lord's vineyard forever… a p r i e s t f o r e v e r according to the order of M e l c h i s e d e c k . T h e D e l e g a t e o f F r . Provincial, Fr. 15 February 2014 will be remembered as a red letter day not only for the province of Jamshedpur but also for Mukti Clarence, as for the first time ever that Jamshedpur Province has had any vocation from Bihar for Jamshedpur. Mukti was ordained a priest in his own home parish of Chuhri of Bettia Diocese on that day. It was a solemn occasion as the Archbishop of Patna, Most Rev. William D'Souza, (needless to mention that he once was the parish priest of the same parish himself was there to ordain Deacon Mukti a priest in the presence of a good n u m b e r o f P a t n a Jesuits, most of whom were related to Mukti, and diocesan and other p r i e s t s n u m b e r i n g about 40. Jamshedpur P rov ince was we l l represented for the auspicious occasion by the Provincial, Fr Mike T. Raj h imsel f , the

Mission Superior, Fr Tony S Raj, PCF, Fr Joe Surin, the Assistant PP of Tangrain Parish, Fr Alfred Bodra, Fr George Thana and two of our RTC Ranchi theologians Ranjit Minj and Rethesh.

The whole of Chuhri Parish pitched in to make the day a solemn

occasion and a great success. The whole program was an amalgamation of the Bihar and Jharkhand culture. Prior to the ordination the whole Basti (inhabitants of Mukti's village) of Mukti led him to the parish (which is just a stone's throw away distance from his house) dancing with the music and 'shahnaai' as “Barat”

When the time came for the family to hand over their son Mukti to the Bishop, his mother, brother and sister-in-law led Mukti to the altar placing before him the “Dalia” (bamboo basket)

After briefly explaining to the deacon the nobility of the call to the priesthood the Bishop laid his hands on Anil and anointed him a priest and, thereafter, Anil had the 'good feeling' of

having all the priests present lay their hands on his head in blessing. At the end of the priestly ordination, the priests who came all the way from Jamshedpur, greeted and congratulated the newly ordained priest. The Delegate, Fr. Joseph Surin, thanked the entire family and parish for offering Anil to Jamshedpur Province. On the eve of the ordination, the PCF and the other priests from Jamshedpur were warmly welcomed to Anil's home. Our Jam priests witnessed the

people's joy over the ordination of Anil as they welcomed him and the entire contingent of priests with Nagada, Mandar, dance and singing. As is the custom , the feet of the guests are washed but due to the biting cold, their hands only were washed. The entire family was introduced to us . Fr. Joseph Surin , representing the Provincial, draped a shawl over Anil's brother and his wife and presented a memento of Anil to remind them that while the

Province was accepting their gift of Anil to work in the vineyard in Jamshedpur Diocese, the Provincial was leaving behind a large framed picture of Anil for them to recall their supreme sacrifice of Anil to labour as a priest.

OPPOSITION TO THE BRIEF OF SUPPRESSION

The letter of the Archbishop of P a r i s , C h r i s t o p h e r d e Beaumont, to the Holy Father dated April 24, 1774, opposing the Suppression:

[Continuation of the letter from the previous issue]

“In any case, Holy Father, it is

impossible for me to ask the clergy

to accept the Brief; for in the first

place, I would not be listened to,

were I unfortunate enough to lend

the aid of my ministry to its

acceptance. [...]

Moreover, if it is true that the

Order is to be condemned under

the specious pretext of the

impossibility of peace, as long as

the Society exists, why not try it on

those bodies which are jealous of

the Society? [...]

“For what is that peace which is

incompatible with this Society?

The question is startling in the

reflection it evokes; for we fail to

understand how such a motive had

the power to induce Your Holiness

to adopt a measure which is so

hazardous, so dangerous, and so

prejudicial. Most assuredly the

peace which is irreconcilable with

the existence of the Society is the

peace which Jesus Christ calls

insidious, false, deceitful. In a

word what the Brief designates as

peace is not peace; Pax, pax et non

erat pax. It is the peace which vice

and libertinism adopt; it is the

peace which cannot ally itself with

virtue, but which on the contrary

has always been the principal

enemy of virtue.“It is precisely that peace against which the piety of the Jesuits in the four quarters of the world have declared an active, a vigorous, a bloody warfare; which they have carried to the limit and in which they have achieved the greatest success. To put an end to that peace, they have devoted their talents; have undergone pain and

to put his feet into to walk till the altar. Another touching symbolic gesture was Mukti washing the feet of the relatives and lay people of the parish before the ordination symbolizing that a priest is at the service of the Church, the spouse of Christ. It was indeed a touching gesture for all.

The crowd was mind blowing which included the boys and girls of the parish who also took care of all the dances, Bible dance and offertory, as it happens in Ranchi area. The choir was excellent with the priest and religious candidates leading the choir with their voices

lifting up our hearts and spirits. After the ordination a grand felicitation program was arranged by the parishioners and the school children. The parish members and the school boys and girls put up a spectacular show to the amazement of the large gathering The whole program ended with the fellowship meal “Agape” for all, which, of course, was the climax and indication of a well organized religious gathering. No wonder all went back with the feeling of déjà vu.

SUPPRESSION and

RESTORATION (No. 8)

The priestly ordination of Dn. Bhincent Bhengra, to remember, was record breaking, indeed. An exaggeration, of course, but also

a genuine expression of my mood at that time. Dn. Bhincent was ordained a priest by the most reverend Bp Kishore Kumar Kujur, DD, Bishop of R o u r k e l a i n t h e c o u r t y a r d o f S t . M a r y ' s C a t h o l i c Church, Sundargarh on 22 February 2014. D n B h i n c e n t B h e n g r a , t h e c o n g r e g a t i o n o f priests numbering about 45 (17 from Jamshedpur) and the Rev. Bp Kishore were led to the altar in a procession, with more than a hundred ladies, girls and little girls dressed in all colours possible, dancing. Frs. Mike T Raj, the Provincial, S Tony, the Mission Superior, were on either side of the ordaining prelate. Our Provincial, Fr Mike T Raj, as usual presented Dn Bhincent to the Bishop as he was brought to the altar with an Adivasi ritual. The encouraging and inspiring homily of Most Rev. Bp Kishore then began, where he explained the inner meaning of the sacrament and the demand of responsibility and accountab i l i ty for i t . Woolsie, Gyanprakash, Oscar Horo, Donald D'Silva and Praful Barla were some of those who formed the Jamshedpur contingent. Fr. Mike T Raj took charge of the proposing the vote of

thanks before the f inal b lessing. He expressed gratitude to the Bishop and Bhincent's family, and all the faithful present, for the generous gif t of Bhincent to Jamshedpur Province and Diocese. He also spelt out his feeling of perceiving the absence of younger men in the congregation with an obvious hint that they are too following the footsteps of Bhincent in the near future.

The previous evening with Bhincent's family was a memorable one for us. After the customary washing of hands, Ajit Soreng introduced us all to the family and villagers present. In turn, the family too was introduced to us. In the beautiful prayer before the banquet by Oscar Horo who prayed for Dn Bhincent, his parents, family, village and

villagers and all that we could think of. Finally, the Provincial blessed Bhincent and then honoured his p a r e n t s w i t h tradit ional shawls. Surely the Society accepted the gift of their son to work in the Lord's vineyard, b u t w e w e r e attempting to fill the void in their hearts with a framed picture

of their son - for them to remember their generous offering of Bhincent to the Society.

suffering. By their zeal and their eloquence they have striven to block every avenue of approach, by which this false peace might enter and rend the bosom of the Church; they have set the souls of men free from its thralldom, and they have pursued it to its innermost lair, making light of the danger and expecting no other reward for their daring, than the hatred of the licentious and the persecution of the ungodly.

“An infinite number of splendid illustrations of their courage might be adduced in the long succession of memorable achievements which have never been interrupted from the first moment of the Society's existence until the fatal day when the Church saw it die. If that peace cannot co-exist with the Society, and if the re-establishment of this pernicious peace is the motive of the destruction of the Jesuits, then the victims are crowned with glory and they end their career like the Apostles and Martyrs; but honest men are dismayed by this holocaust of piety and virtue.

“In this letter I am not constituting myself an apologist of the Jesuits; but I am placing before the eyes of Your Holiness the reasons which, in the present case, excuse us from obeying. I will not mention place or time, as it is an easy thing for Your Holiness to convince yourself of the truth of my utterance. Your Holiness is not ignorant of them. […]

“In a word, most Holy Father, the clergy of France, which is the most learned and most illustrious of Holy Church, and which has no other aim than to promote the glory of the Church, does now judge after deep reflection that the reception of the Brief of Your Holiness will cast a shadow on the glory of the clergy of France; and it does not propose to consent to a measure which, in ages to come, will tarnish its glory. By rejecting the Brief and by an active resistance to it our clergy will transmit to posterity a splendid example of integrity and of zeal for the Cathol ic Fa i th , fo r the prosperity of the Church and particularly for the honor of its Visible Head”

SUPPRESSION and

RESTORATION

Newly-ordained-Priest Benjamin Lakra, accompanied by his brother and sister-in-law, came back to Bordor from home on 31 January. The St. Paul Miki parishioners were eagerly waiting for him and welcomed him in the church on 2 February. He offered his first and solemn Ho Mass for the faithful. The same day, we had the anticipated feast day celebration of St. Paul Miki and the Annual Sports Day of the school. For the sports day, Mr. Rohit Rajpal, the D i r e c t o r o f E d u c a r e , Jamshedpur was the Chief Guest and Gregory D'Silva, the Guest of Honour. The children took part in the various events with lots of enthusiasm and allowed their latent talents to come through.

Oscar Horo's elder sister Miss Susana who is in Mandar, donated a 5 KVA. generator to Bordor. It was through Oscar's intervention that we got what was a crying need for all of us. We sincerely thank Miss Susana and the family

members for their generosity.

Niranjan says that the harvest is plenty so we need to go out. With this

idea he went out for vocation promotion for a week. Meanwhile, he also went to attend Deacon Bhincent's s Priestly Ordination. To better our level of competency with regard to accounts Benjamin and Niranjan went to Jamshedpur to attend the Workshop arranged by the Province Treasurer, K. M. Joseph. In

Loyola on 23 February.

Bene, after his almost three months stay in Jamshedpur for

the treatment of his sickness, came back to Bordor on 24 February. He says that he is alright now.

In the midst of Mage Porob, the students of St. Paul Miki are single mindedly waiting for their annual exams which are to begin from 4 March .The question papers are in the press.

The month of February was busy for the Juniors. Overall the classes are very intensive as the Juniorate studies are slowly approaching the last days of the final term. On

2 February, all the Juniors visited the Science City. It was a day of fun as well as acquiring visual knowledge of our universe. Just after two days, we had a chance to see all varieties of books at the International Book Fair. On 8 we had a community picnic at the p i c tu re pe r fec t su r round ings o f the

Sundarbans. We spent the whole day in a large motor boat relaxing and entertaining ourselves with different games, music, etc. On

19 both the Provincial, Mike T Raj, and the PCF, Joseph Surin, made their annual v is i tat ion to Dhyan Ashram. It was a happy moment in which they encouraged us to

'never give up' in our endeavour to put our whole heart and mind to do well in our studies.

- David Kullu

It has been a phenomenal month for us in which we witnessed a variety of happenings that took our breath away!

On 5 February evening, DNC community had the rare opportunity to listen and interact with Fr. Jose Gabriel Funes SJ, the d i r e c t o r o f t h e V a t i c a n Observatory, Rome. His highly intelligent and informative talk on “Jesuit Mission at the Vatican Observatory” was much appreciated by all.

Then came the most awaited event of this

academic year the 'DIAKONIA'. rdTen of our 3 Year scholastics

were confer red Diaconate Ordination by Most Rev. Valerian

D'Souza, Bishop Emeritus of Pune, on 8 February, in the Papal Seminary Hall. They

were ordained Deacons along with 25 other Holy Cross and the Diocesan brothers. Due to some

unavoidable circumstances this year we could not have the DIAKONIA at DNC. However, our deacons were given a special felicitation in the community later in the afternoon. At the

JDV level, the 'Diakonia Day' ended with a glittering ceremony to honour the newly ordained deacons. To honour them, in the evening, JDV in collaboration with 'Kalahrdaya' presented a 'Bharatnatyam' on Biblical and traditional themes in the Papal Seminary Hall. Fr. Saju George SJ and his troupe from Kolkata with their heart-throbbing 'Nritya-Sandhya' made their explosive p r e s e n c e f e l t w i t h t h e i r mesmerizing performances. It

was indeed a wonderful treat to watch their splendid performance.

As part of Santal apostolate on 16 February we had a grand celebration of 'Baha Porob” organized by the DNC tribal brothers. More than 400 Santals from Mumbai and Pune city joined us for the occasion. It was an opportune forum both for the Christian and non-Christian Santals to be able to celebrate the feast with such joy. Around the same time we had in our midst several of our pastors from our own province. Along with George Antony they were here for a three-day

JEPASA meeting. On 19 evening the DNC community hosted a sumptuous dinner in honour of all the pastors of all the provinces.

On 16 February, John Karuvelil along with his elder brother George SJ, went to Bangalore to see his cousin, Sr. Gracy Karuvelil (of Satya Seva Sisters) who was admitted in the ICU of St. Martha's Hospital, Bangalore. He became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich

(cf. 2 Cor 8:9)

Dear brothers and sisters, may this Lenten season find the whole Church ready to bear witness to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ. We can do this to the extent that we imitate Christ who became poor and enriched us by his poverty. Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.May the Holy Spirit, through whom we are "as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything" (2 Cor 6:10), sustain us in our resolutions and increase our concern and responsibility for human destitution, so that we can become merciful and act with mercy. In expressing this hope, I likewise pray that each individual member of the faithful and every Church community will undertake a fruitful Lenten journey. I ask all of you to pray for me. May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you safe.

The month of February was a challenge for us to find meaning in the ordinariness of life. We are

delivering sermons has already started. The Second Years are preaching in the Kanke parish whereas the First Years are horning their skills for effective sermons in the weekday Mass at Tarunoday itself both in Hindi and English. Get-togethers in ministry places still continue. On 23 February Retesh had an enjoyable picnic with his ministry people. We have hardly one and half months left for the academic year to end. The remaining days in RTC will be quite enterprising as we are engaged in writing our Integration Paper. Besides the regular annual exams this

Integration Paper helps us integrate and consolidate our learning so far from acquired knowledge. The full bloomed mango trees in the campus remind us that summer is approaching and thus the p lann ing fo r ou r summer programme has already begun.

Community: With the dawn of the spring season the relentless d r u m b e a t s o f m a r r i a g e ceremonies inevitably rend the air enhancing the glamour of a change of season. On 22 F e b r u a r y, s u c h a f e s t i v e ambiance permeated throughout the territory of the Sundargarh Parish on the occasion of Fr. Bhincent Bhengra's priestly ordination. Out of more or less forty priests, 17 were Jesuits hailing from different parts of the province so as to raise the then Deacon Bhicent Bhengra to the status of priesthood.

On 20 February, three of our community members, namely, Gyan Kujur, Biranchi Soreng and Mahesh Nayak we re present at Rutungia on the occasion of the blessing of the Church Rutungia Parish.

On 2 February, four of our community members, namely, Gyan, Blacius, Bipin and Biranchi went to the Salunki D a m s i t u a t e d c l o s e t o Khajuripada of Kandhamal for the Deanery picnic. Seemingly, the Jesuit presence and participation was quite overwhelming and entertaining to all the clergy and the religious.

Parish: In the history of the Tumudibandha Parish, the month of February 2014 stands out to be the most significant one on two grounds, first, fragmentation of t h e p a r i s h a n d , s e c o n d , inauguration of Roda Church.

On 18 February, the Tumudibandha Parish g a v e b i r t h t o t h e Kotagarh Parish losing two of its vibrant Mandalis (Christian Communities) situated in the plain locality of Kotagarh. On this emotionally charged occasion, some catechists probably expressed their dissatisfaction to our Parish Priest,

Romanus Kerketta saying, “Ame Kuade hele jibu” (We will go to some other denominations). His fatherly affectionate response was, “It is for nothing else but for their better pastoral care”.

On 19 February, the newly erected Roda Mandali Church was inaugurated by His Grace, Most Rev. John Barwa, the Archbishop of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archdiocese. On this occasion, the church was jam-packed and another vast majority remained outdoors despite the discomfort under the scorching sun. It is worth-mentioning that the villagers took the Archbishop for a tour in their village during their reception ceremony.

On 11 February, the L u r d e F e a s t w a s observed with great

pomp and gaiety. On this occasion, Ajit Soreng, the Parish Priest of the Rutungia Parish, was the main celebrant and homilist. Reportedly, he inspired our parishioners through his heart searching homily and brought them evermore closer to our Beloved Mother Mary. Hats off to you, dear Fr. Ajit!

Odisha Citizen's Initiatives (OCI): Apart from NTFP (Non-timber Forest Products) and SMC (School Management Committee) training programmes in both Mundigada and Subarnagiri GPs, the OCI, Tumudibandha inaugurated Shanti Sadbhavna Volleyball Tournament 2014 for the youth of the Mundigada GP from 14 to 17 February. Altogether 16 teams registered themselves for the historic tournament and the OCI, Tumudibandha, received full co-operation from both the team members and the villagers of Seshargaon. Undoubtedly, the volleyball tournament has helped to blend the youth of the Mundigada GP with Shanti Sadbhavna (peace and fellowship). The dazzling success of this innovative youth programme has further boosted us up for many more youth programme in the near future.

From 11 to 12 February, a two-day seminar on “Violation of Human Rights in Odisha” was organized by All Odisha Human Rights Forum in Bhubaneswar. A kind of picture of the Adivasis and the Dalits was separately presented by various resource persons hailing from different corners of Odisha. “It was a grace-filled encouraging forum for me to see many young lay human rights activists in the seminar” recounts Biranchi Soreng.
