GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF COMMUNION

For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ's prayer for us "that they may all be one" (Jn 17:21).

Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3). For those not receiving Holy Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. For non-Christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

NORMAS PARA LA RECEPCIÓN DE LA COMUNIÓN Para los católicos Los católicos participamos plenamente en la celebración de la Eucaristía cuando recibimos la Sagrada Comunión. Se nos anima a recibirla frecuentemente y con devoción. Para estar debidamente preparados a recibir la Eucaristía, los fieles no deben haber cometido pecado grave y deben haber ayunado por una hora antes de comulgar. Quien haya cometido pecado grave desde su última confesión no debe recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor sin antes haberse confesado con un sacerdote, excepto en situaciones extremas cuando no hay oportunidad de confesarse. En tal caso, los fieles deben estar conscientes de la obligación de hacer un acto de Contrición perfecta con la intención de confesarse lo más pronto posible (Derecho Canónico, canon 916). Se anima a los fieles a recibir el Sacramento de la Penitencia con frecuencia. Para los cristianos no católicos Damos la bienvenida a todos los cristianos, como a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a esta celebración de la Eucaristía. Rogamos para que nuestro bautismo común y el Espíritu Santo nos unan unos a otros en esta Eucaristía y que comiencen a disiparse las lamentables divisiones que nos separan. Siguiendo la oración del Señor "que todos sean uno" (Jn 17:21), rogamos para que estas divisiones sean aminoradas y finalmente desaparezcan.

Los católicos creemos que la celebración Eucarística es una señal de unidad en la fe, la vida y el culto. A los miembros de las Iglesias con las cuales no estamos plenamente unidos, por lo general no se les invita a comulgar. Para compartir la Eucaristía en situaciones excepcionales, con cristianos no católicos, se necesita obtener el permiso del obispo diocesano según las provisiones del canon 844 &4 del Derecho Canónico. Instamos a los miembros de las Iglesias Ortodoxas, de la Iglesia Asiria de Occidente y de la Iglesia Nacional Católica Polaca, a que respeten las normas de sus propias iglesias. As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Broth-ers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the minis-try of the word.”

The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nich-olas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the Apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.

The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly.

The ones who will be ordained as Deacons are called forward and presented to Bishop Walkowiak. Father Mark Przybysz, director of ministry and life of permanent deacons, testifies to their readiness. The Bishop announces the election of the candidates:

Bishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and of our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these brothers for the Order of the Diaconate. All: Thanks be to God. The response is followed by applause.

The candidates stand and make these promises: to be consecrated as a minister of the Church, to serve with humble charity, to proclaim the Christian faith in word and deed, and to pray faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours. Laying On of Hands and Prayer of Ordination The gift of the Holy Spirit for the office of Deacon is conferred on the candidates through the laying on of hands by the Bishop and the Prayer of Ordination.

At the end of the prayer, all respond: Amen. Investiture with Stole and Dalmatic The stole is a sign of Holy Orders and of service. It is to be worn by the Deacon whenever he exercises his distinctive liturgical ministry. The stole is worn over the left shoulder, and extends diagonally across the front and back of the upper body and over the hip. The dalmatic is a special tunic that is worn primarily at Mass.

Daniel Esch and his wife, Pa-tricia, are members of St. Jude Parish in Grand Rapids. They were married at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Parish in Jack-son, Michigan. They have three adult children; Madalyn, Abigail and Joseph. Dan is re-cently retired after a forty-year career as a civil engineer. He completed his pastoral

internship under Father Anthony Pelak at As-sumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Belmont. Dan has been assigned to his home par-ish of St. Jude.

Michael Hollern and his wife, Frances, are members of Holy Family Parish in Caledo-nia. They were married at St. Thomas the Apostle in Grand Rapids. The marriage was wit-nessed by Michael’s father, Deacon Dale Hollern, who served in the Diocese of Grand Rapids until his death in 2011. Michael and Frances have

three adult children; Kara, Kyle, and Caitlin. Mi-chael retired after a career in operations man-agement at Steelcase. He completed his pastoral internship under Father John Vallier at St. John Vianney Parish in Wyoming. Michael has been assigned to St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Grand Rapids.

Thu Le and his wife, Hong Dinh, are members of Our Lady of La-Vang Parish in Wy-oming. They were married at the church of Tam Thai in Vietnam. They have two sons; Peter and Thomas. Thu is a supervisor at L3–Harris. He completed his pastoral intern-ship under Father Peter Vu at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in

Kentwood. Thu has been assigned to his home parish of Our Lady of La-Vang.

Donato Perez and his wife, Maria, are members of the Shrine of St. Francis Xavier & Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Grand Rapids where they were married in 2013. They have three children; Kevin, Mayra, and Adamaris. Donato is a self-employed painting contractor. He completed his pastoral internship under Fa-

ther Stephen Dudek at Holy Name of Jesus Par-ish in Wyoming. Donato has been assigned to his home parish of St. Francis Xavier & Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Brian Piecuch and his wife, Carmen, are members of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Hol-land. They were married at St. Theresa Parish in Palatine, Illinois. They have five chil-dren; Armand, Sofia, Cristina, Lucia, and Austin. Brian is the director of development and stewardship for the Saint Benedict Institute at Hope

College. He completed his pastoral internship under Father William Vander Werff at St. Luke University Parish in Allendale. Brian has been as-signed to his home parish of St. Francis de Sales.

Thomas Roberts and his wife, Cindy, are members of St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Grand Rapids where they were married in 1984. They have three adult children; Kel-li, Kaitlin, and Charles. Thom-as retired in 2021 after a ca-reer in banking. Thomas has been assigned to St. Mary Par-ish in Marne and St. Michael

Parish in Coopersville where he completed his pastoral internship under Father Ayub Nasar.

Gregory Sokolowski and his wife, Cheryl, are members of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Parish in Belmont. They were married at St. Jo-seph Parish in Wright. They have four adult children; Jere-miah, Kenneth, Lorae, and Samuel. Gregory is a self-employed painting and dry-wall contractor. He complet-

ed his pastoral internship at St. Bartholomew Parish in Newaygo and St. Joseph Parish in White Cloud under Father Steven Geerling. Gregory has been assigned to Holy Family Parish in Sparta.
