LETTER FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Your chamber continues to lead the way in providing outstanding programs and services, advocating for your business interests and seeking ways to make Effingham county attractive for business success and community growth.

We were recognized as the 2016 Outstanding Chamber of the Year by our peers in the chamber industry by the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives November 4 in Quincy.

The award recognizes organization excellence and benchmarks a chamber’s strengths in the areas of leadership, governance, finance, advocacy and membership development.

With our Centennial year on the horizon, you can expect even more leadership from the organization that began in 1917 to support business and industrial growth and increase business opportunities in Effingham. We have grown and changed with the needs of the community and are proud to represent the needs of Effingham County businesses.

The Journey - The Vision is our centennial theme and you can read about our plans to celebrate this milestone year in our Chamber’s history on page 13 of this issue. We welcome your involvement as a volunteer and/or sponsor of our Centennial year.

As we’ve done for 99+ years, our success depends on your involvement and ideas. Join us in this unique opportunity to celebrate 100 years of business growth, opportunity and engagement in helping Effingham County shine in east central Illinois.

Steve Grant, Dale Carnegie Training

The Chamber welcomed Madam Eva Wu from New Silk Road Vocational Education Services in Hong Kong and Dr. Jim Hull from Lake Land College to Effingham to discuss educational collaboration.

“The Effingham County Chamber has shown that commitment to membership and strong leadership can grow an organization and positively impact its community.”

Desiree Bennyhoff, 2016 IACCE Chair

“Way to go! We are very fortunate to have such a powerful, productive chamber that has so much to offer. You are always moving forward. Keep up the good work.”

With our mission of providing innovative programs and services to address business

success and community growth, the Chamber is proud to announce formation of the Chamber

Business Outreach Center.

When many of the State’s Small Business Development Centers closed at the end of 2015 due to state budget cuts, the free and confidential business consulting services the chamber was able to provide to entrepreneurs and growth businesses ceased. Our Business Development team went to work to find other options for providing these needed services to ensure the start of successful businesses in Effingham County. Our response is the Chamber Business Outreach Center Mentor program.

Through this initiative, we will be using a team of highly qualified volunteers to provide mentoring assistance as a step toward building and strengthening our business community. Led by Brad Hastings and Dan Woods, we are currently recruiting local residents willing to provide mentoring support. By utilizing subject matter experts with real world experience, we will be able to provide advice, guidance and support for entrepreneurs and business owners facing growth challenges and keep Effingham County full of active, involved and successful businesses.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming an Outreach Center mentor, please contact Chamber President Norma Lansing at [email protected] or call 217-342-4147.

THE EXPERIENCE OF SHOPPING LOCAL

By now you must have heard of “Shop Local” marketing campaigns – encouraging people to shop in their own community and support the “Mom and Pop” stores with their purchases. And, happily, this message is resonating in a positive way. Even in our own community, we are encouraging people to shop smart with our own Shop Local Holiday Treasure Map. Sounds like a fun experience, doesn’t it?

That is all part of the appeal of shopping local and supporting small business. Today, people – especially younger people - are looking for ways in their own communities to have more unique and personalized ‘experiences’ that they can share with others.

According to a recent Edelman Digital study, 40% of Millennial participants preferred to shop locally, even if they would have to pay more for their purchases.

Our Effingham County community’s beauty is that we can offer exactly what both older and younger generations desire: unique, one-of-a-kind shopping experiences that are close to home.

Effingham County is home to small retailers that offer customized services. Whether you are looking for retail that is tailored to your needs, local bakeries that specialize in personalized products, or restaurants that prepare locally sourced meats and produce, Effingham County has a lot to offer. Local shops also have the advantage of our “small town” friendliness that positively impacts the patrons’ shopping experiences.

Local shops also have the advantage of our “small town” friendliness that positively impacts the patrons’ shopping experiences.

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS ISN’T ANYTHING NEW.IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE MAKING A COMEBACK.

Several local business owners agree that community support not only helps boost their business & the economy,

it also allows them to form close-knit relationships with customers.

According to Stacia Bloemer, owner of The Thomas Shop along with her mom, Kathy

Thomas, says,

“The Thomas Shop has been located in downtown

Effingham for 80 years and we have developed

some beautiful, long lasting relationships with clients,

their children and even their grandchildren.

Thanks to the support of our customers, we are able to

give back to the Effingham community by supporting the CEO program, local charities and other fundraisers, too.”

Kay Spruell, owner of Burkland’s Florist and Gifts,

adds,

“One of the best ways to show pride in your city is to support

local business.

Shopping local also helps to protect the businesses that

make your community unique. Burkland’s has been in business since 1932 – and thanks to the

Effingham community, we will be celebrating 20 years in business under our ownership

in November 2016!”

“Without a doubt, Nuxoll Food Center wouldn’t

be in existence without the support of our local

community. We have been serving area families since

1934.

Three and four generations of families shop our store because they know they are getting high-quality

products, like produce, meat and candies, that we buy

from local providers as well,”

says Fred Nuxoll, owner of Nuxoll Food Center.

Make it a priority to support your local economy, as well as your friends, neighbors & colleagues. Seek out, support, and experience your Effingham County Community Businesses!

Supporting local business certainly has benefits that help strengthen the economic base of the

community. Typically, local businesses hire local people and are more invested in local communities.

Even entrepreneurs are now more likely to start their specialized businesses in smaller communities,

according to recent economic research.

DO YOU KNOW A BUSINESS THAT IS DESERVING OF CHAMBER MEMBER OF THE MONTH RECOGNITION?

The Member of the Month Program celebrates the contributions that our members make to our community and the local economy through their continued growth and expansion, innovation and

community support. Criteria and nomination forms are available on the Chamber website at www.effinghamcountychamber.com/member-center/member-month.

In 1881, Effingham’s population was just over 3,000 people and the city only had one bank. That’s when four businessmen showed the can-do attitude Effingham is known for today and opened the private bank of Eversman, Wood & Engbring. The private bank was chartered as Effingham State Bank in 1903

and then became Midland States Bank in 2005.

135 years later, the bank has continued to contribute to the growth of the community and has itself grown to include more than 80 locations across the U.S. Midland States Bank offers a full range of commercial and consumer banking products and services, credit card, insurance and financial services and trust & investment management. The bank also provides commercial equipment leasing services and multi-

family and health care facility financing.

The bank and 180+ employees in the corporate office and branch bank facilities in Effingham pride themselves on the relationships they build with their customers and serving the financial needs of the

local community.

They contribute to the community in many ways, from the Midland Institute’s efforts to expand the CEO program into multiple states to fundraisers benefitting many organizations and individuals and leadership on many local boards and community

initiatives.

The Chamber is proud to have Effingham Market President Mel Stock as the Chair-Elect of our Board of Directors and the bank’s support through sponsorships and employees serving on various

planning and event committees.

Global Technical Systems has been doing business in Effingham County since 1994 and like many business start-up stories, the business began in the basement of co-owner Terry Poe. Poe, along with his partner Christopher Ginder, took their education and experience in electronics and the telecommunications industry to found a company that focuses on accurate

system design and reliable and prompt service.

GTSI is now an industry leader in communications and outdoor warning systems and operates out of three locations throughout central Illinois with a staff of 20 talented and dedicated staff members. The company represents the industry’s finest manufacturers and is recognized as a worldwide Top 10 Reseller for Zetron; a Red Diamond Kenwood Dealer and a top distributor for Whelen. The recent remodel of their Effingham location added office space and employees and earned them the Effingham Central Business Group’s

Downtown Improvement Award.

Company employees are active in their local communities through sponsorships and support. Employees volunteer hours for many communities, which supports local churches, charities and other

quality of life needs.

GTSI’s Effingham Manager Mike Schabbing is a Chamber Ambassador and member of the

Membership Development Committee.
