Chicago United is an advocacy organization that enriches the economic fabric of Chicago by building

sustainable diversity in business leadership. Chicago United is a corporate member organization whose

active participants are the most senior level officers of the corporations. Our membership is made up

of both corporate CEOs and minority enterprise CEOs. These leaders are closest to the key issues in the

business environment and recognize the value of diversity and inclusion in their own organizational

health and success as well as the larger positive impact on the economic fabric of Chicago and our

nation. As the thought leaders that develop the advocacy position and programs of Chicago United,

our members focus on sustainable diversity in the business community as a channel through which

they can contribute to and impact the local social and economic structures in which their businesses

operate and thrive.

Acknowledgements

Dear Conference Participants,

An inaugural event cannot be developed and delivered without the support of an active membership and many friends. First and foremost, I thank Tim Schwertfeger, Chairman of the Executive Committee and all its members for the unwavering support and belief in the concept of a conference focused on the development of multiracial leadership. To Bill Osborne and John Rogers who signed up to support the conference while the concept was still in rough form, I appreciate your leadership and your confidence in the organization. The individuals listed below participated in development meet-ings, they organized and hosted events supporting the conference and its mission, and many provided input via emails and phone calls, some recommended press contacts and helped secure speakers. To each I owe a debt of gratitude including:

The team at Chicago United is the hardest working group ever to be assembled. I can only begin to express my personal appreciation. Ana Souchet and Teresa Sarna provide incredible, dedicated and seemingly tireless support. Arin N. Reeves, PhD., the president of the Athens Group has been an inspiration in diversity strategies. Glenn Eden, thank you for incredible pro bono assistance in public relations. Judy Mathews, president of Community Interface – you are the unsung hero. This conference would not have made it past the concept stage without you.

The CU team also appreciates the dedicated work of Patricia Vogt Design, PJH & Associates, MELODY’service, Fusion Technology Partners and Wedgeworth Business Communications.

To all who made this conference a success, thank you.

Sincerely,

While we as business leaders must certainly continue programs that help more minorities reach management and executive positions in our companies, the ultimate goal for our city and our nation shouod be creating a society that is so fair and so just that it renders such programs obsolete.

In the workplace and the marketplace the number of women and people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants and people among other demographic groups have grown significantly. What this says is that we must be inclusive. Inclusive in the clients we serve and inclusive in the hiring, development and deployment of those who serve those clients.

As a company rooted in a world-class city like Chicago – with all its rich diversity, it is only natural that what is important to our diverse communities is also important to us. That’s why we build diversity into our corporate culture by tying the diversity of our employee base to our executives’ compensation, opening our doors to minority partners and advancing the professional growth of our minority employees. Uniting people from all walks of life is a legacy we should leave in our business and in our own neighborhoods.

Cultivating diversity within a company isn’t a concept that manifests itself solely in an expanded customer base or a reflective employee roster. Corporate diversity is the conscious effort to bring individuals and business partners with varied backgrounds, preferences, experiences and cultures to the table, as active participants in the process of meeting the needs of our diverse customers.

Bridge Award Introduction

TH E BRI DGE AWARD

The Bridge Award celebrates the accomplishments of the Chief Executive Officer of a publicly held corporation who has inspired and implemented diversity at the Board of Directors level. The award also recognizes the corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management as well as in their business partnerships, especially with diverse vendors.

The Bridge Award Recipient and Corporate Governance Honorees were selected as a result of extensive research of the Fortune 1000 publicly-traded companies. Based on a thorough and rigorous examination of publicly available data, a team of external diversity consultants selected the companies based on quantitative and qualitative criteria. The five companies were further reviewed by an internal and an external committee consisting of current and retired corporate executives and academicians. The members of each committee reviewed the data and categorically rated each company accordingly.

Committee members were selected based on their neutrality and were not compensated for their participation. The final award was based solely on a cumulative point system of the rating criteria given to the each committee.

TH E ADVOCATE AWARD

The Advocate Award celebrates the accomplishments of a public- or private-sector citizen who actively recognizes the importance of diversity to our country’s economy and global competitiveness. The recipient must have demonstrated, through meritorious public or private sector service, successful strategies for stimulating and promoting inclusion in public or private sector governance, workforces and business partnerships; and their efforts to leverage their position to continue to elevate the discussion of inclusion.

The Bridge and Advocate Awards are presented during the annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and Bridge Awards Dinner held annually in Chicago, Illinois. Each award is presented by the Chairman of our Executive Committee and Presenting Sponsor of the event respectively.
