Director’s Notes I n d e p e n d e n t . . . C o n f i d e n t . . . O u t s p o k e n . . . I n t e l l i g e n t . . .

If most of us were born in Shakespeare’s time, we might have been considered a “Shrew.” It wasn’t a grand time to be a woman. Petruchio tamed Kate with mind games, starvation, and overt kindness. In Kiss Me, Kate, the actor, Fred, follows the chauvinistic attributes of his character to “tame” his ex-wife actress, Lilli. But in the end, who’s taming whom? Their story is the central storyline in our saga. It is a love story - much like I’ve had with this musical since 1972.

At 17, I was cast in the chorus of Bloomington Civic Theatre’s production of Kiss Me, Kate. This was just one of many theatre gigs in the Twin Cities for me through the early years of my life. But time and again, my thoughts would return to this show and I’d dream about certain scenes and what I would have done differently. So it was for years. Life goes on. When the Thief River Falls Community Arts Council decided to produce “Kiss Me, Kate” for the central event of 2010, I knew what I must do — get healthy, get confident, get back into life to direct and costume the one show that’s stuck in my heart for decades.

And I have.

It’s been a joy, and you are coming with me. Let’s romp backstage, behind thescenes for rehearsals, costume changes, drama and love stories. We have givenyou a backstage pass. Interact with the cast. They will be right on you, next to you, making you laugh, cry and involved. Revel at the clever transformation from 1947 toShakespeare’s time. Cheer for the outspoken Kate as she stands her ground.

This cast, these people, this theatre group, this community, this time, this place, is magical. My dream come true. And I thank each and every one of you.

Andrea Thibert

P.S. Please notice Lois’ first appearance costume, played by Jean Larson. This vintage 40’s suit, mink and hat belonged to Margaret Saetre, part of her trousseau. Margaret loved my passion for vintage clothing and made sure I received her precious collection after her death. Thank you dear Lady.
