A SOLEMN SALUTE TO CAPT. JEROMER. HECK

9/26/2018 Hawai‘i Craftsmen - NEWSLETTER June 2017

http://hawaiicraftsmen.org/admin/website/?pageId=1853233 2/15

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Captain Jerome R. Heck, a long time Hawaii Craftsmen member and friend to theHawaii art community. Jerome, who passed away on May 7, 2017, was an American studio ceramist living and working in the hills ofPupukea near Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He was greatly admired by his peers and art lovers everywhere forhis hand built and wheel thrown functional and nonfunctional sculptural ceramics. At times rakufired, at time gasfired, his workconveyed a sense of timelessness in its form, unique colorations, and textured surfaces.

Jerome was honored with multiple purchase awards by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and won numerousawards in juried exhibitions throughout his art career. His work has been published in RAKU A Review of Contemporary Work(1994) and Raku second edition (2005).

Jerome grew up in rural South Dakota and received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts at Northern State University, Aberdeen,South Dakota. During his years as a career Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer he earned a Master of Science degree inOceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Shortly before his retirement from active duty, Jerome startedtaking wheel classes from Sally Fletcher Murchison at Hickam AFB. He was a quick study. Out of curiosity, he attended a RakuHoolaulea event in 1990, and that was it for him.

In Jerome’s own words, from his feature in the book Raku: A Review of Contemporary Work, by Tim Andrews, he said:

“I like to think about Japanese raku by making tea bowls, but my work does not reflect their traditions. Clay allows me to dosomething that is truly my own expression, and reap the pleasure when others enjoy the work. For me, raku was an awakening ofa spirit inside, something unexplainable.”

This does indeed reflect the inimitable spirit that infused his work and his life. It was a privilege to know him and to work with him,and the universe is poorer for his passing. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and the Oahu art community at large.

Message from the Acting PresidentAloha Hawaii Craftsmen members.  I suspect many of us take for granted the well-established programs offered by ourorganization -  including the Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition, Aha Hana Lima Artists Workshops, Raku Ho`olaule`a,and the biennial Fiber Show - but the fact is, these flagship events don’t just happen.  Each one of them involves carefulplanning and skilled execution by HC board members and other member volunteers.  Several years ago, former boardpresident Kay Mura wrote in this space, “It would be unfortunate to see Hawaii Craftsmen disappear but it’s a definite

9/26/2018 Hawai‘i Craftsmen - NEWSLETTER June 2017

http://hawaiicraftsmen.org/admin/website/?pageId=1853233 3/15

possibility if more of the membership doesn’t step up to help.  We need new people to provide the leadership that keepsHawaii Craftsmen a force in the community.”  What Kay expressed then still very much applies.  Our organization, whichhas nurtured and promoted Hawaii’s diverse craft community in good times and bad over the course of 50 years, absolutely depends on its members’ skill sets, enthusiasm, and commitment to continue producing quality programs andservices.

The HC Board of Directors currently has several openings and we are seeking nominations for new board members. Perhaps you have had questions about how the organization conducts it business, or suggestions on ways it can improveits offerings.  Well, now is the time to step up and get involved in the governance of HC.  Remember, HC is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization.  No one can do this but ourselves and in Kay’s words, “…it will only happen if you sayyes…”

We will present a slate of board officers and other board nominees at the next annual meeting. Please consider “throwingyour hat in the ring” - or suggest names of potential candidates who may not be HC members - by contacting me, otherboard members, or [email protected] as soon as possible.

Mahalo,

Terry Savage

Acting President

Deanna Gabiga, StudioDeanna had the inaugural opportunity to hang her hand-crocheted copper wire sculpture piecesat ROC (Real Office Centers) where our board meetings are held & John Friend accomplishes much for our organization. He introduced her to Celine who manages the space for all of the businesses utilizing the ROC.

On a daily basis the ROC space does serve a different customer base than the window box at The Arts at Marks Garage, which can be an advantage. HC members can still reach the First Friday crowds by coordinating openings for yourdisplayed works. Between the inside conference area and the outdoor space, a reasonable Opening Reception could easilybe accomplished. Celine from ROC was very supportive and had suggested this herself. She helped ensure Deanna had agood experience hanging her work. They do have a ladder available on site, also.

There are several box pillars with covers available for more traditional settings. When displaying your work, please berespectful of the space, the paths in which people walk, and leave the space as unmarked as possible for the next artist.

So who’s next?  Contact JuvanaSoliven (at) hawaiicraftsmen dot org Real Office Centers (ROC) is located at 1110 Nuuanu Ave.

For Fiber Artists who work with indigoFor Fiber Artists who work with indigo-you might be interested in this study group that is forming:

Many of us have been frustrated by the conflicting and often unreliable information available concerning the growing anduse of Japanese tadeai indigo (Persicaria tinctoria, a.k.a., Polygonum tinctortium ) in North America, so a few of usdecided to band together and try our hand at finding growing methods that work well in different regions of the UnitedSates. Toward this end, we will be making a good-hearted attempt to remove as many variables from the process as weare able in our attempts to gather and standardize the information we plan to present here. In addition, our goal is toperform several experiments with the results of our harvest, and then as a group test the fastness of our colors to repeatedwashings, sun exposure, and crocking.

Whether you are part of the immediate group or not, your suggestions and questions are always welcome, along with anypersonal experiences on the subject you may care to share.
