Exploring Fairmount AvenueWilliam Penn called this neighborhood Fairmount, because the once rural community was at the top of the largest hill in the area. Others call it the Art Museum area, the reference quite obvious to anyone who has toured the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation or the many other museums of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. We call it one of the best neighborhoods in the city for food, fun and quirky traditions, like Bastille Day when “Marie Antoinette” lets them eat Tastykakes tossed from the roof of the Eastern State Penitentiary and Halloween, when the penitentiary turns from a history-lovers’ haunt into a haunted house.
