Motivation• Southwestern USA during boreal winter may be due to a

northward shift of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), resulting in increased northward transport of water vapor from the tropical Pacific.

• An anomalous low-level anticyclone over the cold sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) of the Philippine Sea was thought to be the key system bridging ‘‘El Nino’’ and a weak East Asian winter monsoon.
