EDITORIAL

As announced in the 2012 editorial, for EMRA, 2013 proved to be the year of consolidation for the company and its business activities.

First of all, in terms of operations, the EMRA Executive Board (made up of managers from the association's five approved research centres) validated the work of the following subject-focused working groups: assistance for business, public procurement, administration, quality and communication.

In terms of research, the main activity of the partners which takes on a strategic importance, an organization has been set up to meet the numerous challenges in this area. The main goal pursued in 2013 was unquestionably the 2014-2020 ERDF programme, in which EMRA will clearly emerge as a major player in Wallonia in the areas it values most: Materials, Processes and the Environment. An internal EMRA task force has been set up with this in mind, and several portfolios largely made up of EMRA partners have been established.

From an organizational perspective, a large number of colleagues in approved research sites in Wallonia have pursued the initiative to reconfigure themselves as an EMRA Close Association (Association Forte, AF). As a result, several AFs were formed in 2013. It goes without saying that these initiatives follow the desired aim of greater visibility for the activities led in the approved research centres both in the Walloon region and internationally, as well as of greater operational efficiency by pooling convergent driving forces.

From the organization set up onward, EMRA will work on the legal status which suit best its close association organizational model. Based on a study conducted by a Walloon agreement and the recommendations made therein, the Executive Committee is drawing up the legal status (most likely in the form of a non-profit) and the internal regulations that will apply to it.

Once approved by the Board of Directors, this 'legal status' phase will undoubtedly be a major step forward for EMRA in 2014.

By reading this report, you will notice that partners’ activities have been highly rewarding, and particularly flourishing in 2013, as shown by the number of R&D projects running simultaneously (98, compared with 78 in 2012, i.e. +26%) and the overall turnover of the business achieved by EMRA (€23.5 million compared with €23 million in 2012, an increase of +2.2%).

Lastly, with the rotation principle put in place by our Executive Board, Véronique Lardot, Deputy Director of INISMa-CRIBC, assisted by Thierry Randoux, Director of Certech, will be taking over the running of EMRA for a period of two years. We wish her every success in this new role, and hope that the dynamism that motivates her is reflected in the action that will be taken by EMRA over the next two years.

I would like to bring this editorial to a close by thanking the members of the Communication working group, Dorothée Coevoet, Céline Buet, Tiphaine Pacary, Maryse Demuynck and Séverine Marquis, for all their hard work.

I would also like to thank all of our 'intermediaries' at the Centres, who have contributed directly or indirectly to the writing of this report.

WORKING GROUPS

à Services for Business The mission of the working group

specifically dedicated to services for business is to develop synergies within the association. Joint participations in certain common meetings and events with industrial sectors have made it possible to offer an extensive range of resources and services in EMRA's three areas of expertise.

Driven by this working group, files have been prepared relating to equipment available through EMRA. The group has developed a PowerPoint presentation, which is useful when meeting with other companies.

Lastly, the group has worked to set up a special guidance project regarding the materials and skills available at EMRA. This guidance project, finally extended to cover the activities of Centexbel and Celabor, will be financed for 2014 and 2015.

à Public Procurement The aim of the Public Procurement

working group is first and foremost to identify the working methods for purchasing and public procurement in each centre, and thereafter to attempt to tender for public bids jointly through EMRA.

One of the achievements of the Public Procurement working group has been to install software for each EMRA member enabling successful public procurement (administrative and budgetary monitoring of tenders).

à Management Active since 2012, the Management

working group was initially used to draw up a comparative table of the various management processes, such as project management, HR management,

accountancy management, purchasing conditions and billing.

In addition to a greater general knowledge of the functions and special characteristics of each process, the work done by the Management group will work towards providing the particular grounds for deciding the future selection of a company secretarial department or an accounting tool, issues against which any centre can quickly come up. In any case, the most tangible achievement fromthese exchanges within the group wil be the acquisition of a software developed by one of its members. The module will enable project-by-project recordings of the daily services of researchers or technicians and useful time sheets, prepared from different frameworks imposed as part of funded research. The module will become effective in 2014 for all EMRA partners.

à Quality If 2012 was the year dedicated to the

Quality managers in our research centres, 2013 was more of an opportunity to bring our respective Quality Management Systems to life.

The EMRA QRs decided to abandon the meetings format and opt for audits crossing over between centres. As a result, the Materia Nova Management System was audited by INISMa-CRIBC and its purchasing process was audited by the CTP. The CTP purchasing process was then audited by Materia Nova. The Certech Quality System was then audited by INISMa-CRIBC.

Moreover, the QRs will from now on be invited to take part in Quality Circles organised at each of the EMRA centres.

à Communication The Communication group has been

working on various communication channels for spreading information on the expertise and technological resources available in the partner centres. In particular, this has led to the production of brochures and roll-ups used for fairs that EMRA has taken part in. The Communication group has also

established a quarterly newsletter sent out to the 12,000 contacts of the Close Association and it is responsible for yearly business activity reports.

This working group became a source of proposals to present a shared image. EMRA now has a new logo to use through the various communication channels.

NEW PROJECTS

à ANOSTEM Through the ANOSTEM project,

EMRA is developing a platform for skills dedicated to the anodising of lights alloys. Financed by the Wallonia region, it brings together the resources for preparing and defining the surfaces required in order to offer businesses a top research and development service. So, for example, the project will involve a new high-resolution SEM-FEG-STEM electronic microscope to determine with nanometric precision the structure and composition of porosities appearing on the surface of the metal. The platform will offer support for businesses in their day-to-day challenges: production, changes to regulations and innovation. The first topic studied will be the anodising of complex small-scale parts (tubes, hoods, screw threads etc.). Obtaining a uniform treatment in terms of thickness or composition of parts is a recurring issue in production. A partnership with the Institute of Condensed Matter and Nanosciences (IMCN) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) was established in order to offer quality theoretical and fundamental support.

à APERROUT

The value in Wallonia of demolition recyclables in the road sector has been hampered in recent years. These materials are being used less and less on road construction sites due to the reluctance of a certain number of advocates (regional and local authorities, design firms, architects etc.) in relation to some bad experiences, who tend to ban use of these materials on their sites. It should be noted that a large portion of these negative experiences can mainly be traced back to processing, which in the case of certain recyclers was very rudimentary. The object of the research is to be able to provide the road sector with superior recycled aggregates prepared for future development through the improvement of processing technologies and an optimised specific laboratory test for recycled products.

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

17

à BYEFOULING Shipbuilding is faced with the

problem of attachment, with the growth of marine species (algae etc.) on the hulls of vessels resulting in not only forced dry-docking and energy consumption for cleaning, but also excessive consumption of fuel caused by the excess tonnage of the vessel. The response to this problem lies in anti-fouling paints to be applied to the hulls of boats. Application needs to be regularly repeated, however, and paints release toxic elements into the environment that prevent the attachment and growth of marine species. The project stems from the development of durable anti-fouling coatings (through the need to apply them for regular use) and the prevention of the formation of biofilms – the nanostructuring of surfaces and existence of specific bacteria.

à CEROPT

The aim of the CEROPT project is the processing of, with applications as laser host and optical systems. These ceramics could replace glasses and single crystals due to a better performance processing. In this project, special attention will be paid to YAG, a reference material in laser applications, and to BaTiO3, a transparent electro-optic ceramic, ideal substitute of other materials containing toxic elements such as lead, bismuth or niobium.

The achievement of these objectives includes computational simulation, for the formulation of new materials with enhanced properties, and a fast sintering technology (SPS, Spark Plasma Sintering). This equipment allows attaining high density in a

very short time by joining pressure and Joule heating effects. Ã DAO

Preservation of the original aesthetic of building envelopes through using a special surface treatment is a distinguishing feature in the competition sought in the metallic construction sector. By using a surface treatment that prevents fouling, enables natural clean-up by precipitation and contributes to the improvement of the appearance of pre-painted surfaces (UV, corrosion, scratching etc.), the new appearance of buildings can be preserved and maintenance costs can be reduced. Mirage 1 enabled the development and marketing of a pre-painted product for easier cleaning. The performance of the coating in terms of self-cleaning will be improved, while a competitive procedure will be developed. Ã FILMCOTEL

This project consists of implementing liquid formula for manufacturing thin, conductive and transparent layers. The formula and deposition methods will be improved to achieve the best balance between conductivity, transparency and ease of use for an improved response to market demands, and especially in response to the required demands for transparent electrodes.

à GROW2BUILD Grow2Build has been working on the

transition of the economy from northwest Europe towards a bioeconomy. Particular attention has been paid to the integration of the local culture as part of this future economy. Grow2Build pays particular attention to hemp and flax-based building materials: Grow2Build incorporates the entire value chain, from production (production and supply) of hemp and flax based building materials up to the marketing of these products, enabling this business activity to grow sustainably and profitably.

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

à MUNACOR The corrosion of metals has

economic repercussions of some significance in industrialised countries as its (direct or indirect) cost is close to 10% of the GDP. These losses are essentially due to insufficient protection of metals through coating, resulting in additional maintenance costs and even the complete replacement of the materials. For multiple applications, numerous successive protective layers (3 to 4) are necessary to make the materials adequately durable (e.g. for the automotive industry). This has some repercussions on the cost of the materials.

The general objective of the Munacor project is to reduce the number of protective layers, as well as their thickness, while offering the most durable coatings. The project offers an effective and lasting double-coating system which is beneficial from a financial perspective. The specific goal of Munacor is to integrate nanometric charges with multiple features in coatings: active protection against corrosion, maximum blocking effect, strengthened mechanical properties and UV resistance. Ã MATOSOL

Standard load specifications impose a maximum admissible content in terms of organic materials for usable granular soils as this has a detrimental effect on the geotechnical characteristics of soils.

As part of the treatment of the soil with lime or a hydraulic binder, the prior determination of the content in organic materials is significant, as a content which is too high has a negative effect on treatment (slower absorption or the mix failing to harden).

By consideringthe standards, the standard specifications in different regions as well as the internal processes of different laboratories, it can be noted that there are numerous operating methods for determining the content in organic materials. Certain methods provide quantitative results (carbon or organic materials content) or those which are merely

qualitative (result to be interpreted by visual comparison with colour standards).

This research project will make it possible to determinate the limits and potentials of different methods, depending on the type of soil under analysis, and interpret the results obtained based on the complete analysis of the soil and the organic material. Certain methods may eventually be improved. A methodology will be defined. Ã NEWGEN

With a predicted ageing population and increasing expectations regarding quality of life in old age, there is an ever increasing demand for procedures such as total hip replacements, bone reconstructions, and spinal fusions, resulting from conditions such as articular cartilage degeneration and osteoporosis.

Commercial calcium phosphate composites for bone regeneration are restricted to applications that require only moderate load bearing abilities. High toughness bioinert materials are used in the articulating couple of artificial joint implants, but they do not support direct bone/material interfaces or bond. To date there is no tough and strong ceramic in regular clinical use with ability to create a strong, biologically relevant, interface with bone.

New advances in biomaterials, with improved processing, bioactivity and/or tailored shapes, providing enough structural integrity and bone integration/regeneration are currently in development at the laboratory scale. However, due to the gap between academic R&D and commercial production, and between materials scientists and clinicians, medical application of these new materials will never be possible unless companies and medics are involved in the development.

This COST Action, NEWGEN, aims at creating the seed for the European research and industry collaboration, combining basic knowledge from academic laboratories, R&D centres, medical units from hospitals, and a significant number of companies

à MIR2OLED The lighting sector for a complete

mix of applications makes up around 19% of global electricity consumption. Fluorescent tubes are particularly damaging when they break inside a building, as they contain highly toxic mercury vapour, which is required for their performance. LED and OLED lighting is more considerate towards the environment. The cost per lumen, however, is still too high (several thousand Euros per m2). A drastic reduction in the sale price for the mass lighting market is needed by 2015-2020. The OLED project forms part of this context and enables teams to develop OLED with a higher performance while integrating different supports.

à OPTHELCO

Energy management has become a crucial challenge for tomorrow's world. It is imperative in the decades to come to limit the production of greenhouse gases in order to bring a stop to and prevent global warming. Reduced emissions of greenhouse gases, especially CO2, can be achieved in a number of different ways : by using renewable energy sources (solar), improving the yield of more conventional technologies, developing more energy-efficient technologies (LED and OLED) and lastly by extending the lifetime of manufactured products. Faced with this new technological and social challenge, coatings and more generally speaking thin-layer materials (sol-gels, paints and plasma coatings) have a role to play. In fact, the increasing rate of innovations in the fields of energy coupled with the need to improve existing products to meet new demands and standards require the development of high-performance lasting coatings and layers, while combining numerous properties that are occasionally antagonistic. As a result, new demands and expectations are emerging regarding surface protection, coating durability and thermal, electrical and optical conductivity. The term 'smart surfaces' has been coined. EMRA, with the support of the UCL (IMCN), is going to develop a platform for discovering the electrical, optical and thermal properties of thin layers or coatings applied to all types of

materials. Already a recognised player in the physico-chemical definition and development of surfaces, EMRA will extend its services to the development of active surfaces (solar absorbers, heat exchangers, photovoltaic systems, LED and OLED, microelectrics, heat sinks etc.). This will affect all products for which properties of thermal dissipation and electrical conductivity and specific surface optical properties are important details in product performance. Ã PRISTIMAT²

With the need to reduce the size of vehicle engine ("depollution" EURO 6 standards), the significant increase of the engine temperature (temperature higher than 1000° C) and hence the need to protect the thermoplastic materials and electronic systems located in the engine environment, the objective of the project PRISTIMAT² is to demonstrate the potential of functionally graded two-phase ceramic-metal composites for managing the heat flux in the vicinity of blocks automotive engines.

The steps of the project consider the design of the material - from specifications of industrials and from modeling of thermal properties – and the development of a prototype (to be used in real conditions), through the characterization of the thermal and thermomechanical properties.

The originality of the project lies in the design of a monolithic heat shield able to redirect heat to where it can be recovered. Ã PRISTIMED

The aging of the population leads to ever increasing the demands in bone substitutes and other implantable medical devices. Based on the scientific results of the PRISTIMAT project (action Medimat), the project partners wish to encourage the use of technological services they have developed from the concerned firms and particularly the health sector (hospitals, prosthetists ...)

The objective of this project is to illustrate how the combined skills of the partners can meet the needs of the market. A « business model » suitable for customized

production will be carried out to establish an inventory of needs for unique pieces and especially target production quantities. Finally, a study of the conditions of success of a start-up or technology transfer in the field of rapid prototyping of calcium phosphate biomaterials (hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate) will be conducted. Ã RESTAR

ReStaR is the acronym of a research project entitled “Review and improvement of testing Standards for Refractory products”. The project is supported by funding from the Research for the benefit of SMEs Theme of the Capacity Programme, under the 7th Research Framework Programme of the European Union. ReStaR started on 1st October 2013 and will run for 24 months. The project is coordinated by the European Centre for Refractories (ECREF) and involves 13 partners from 7 countries.

Refractories are materials essential for all highly industrialized processes which are performed at elevated temperatures e. g. iron- and steelmaking, cement production, glass, ceramics, nonferrous metals, power production and waste incineration. For the purpose of obtaining the technical specifications of those products of high economical importance, testing methods are described in national and international standardization systems, like DIN, CEN or ISO.

However, progressively, the established standard testing methods no longer fulfill the increasing requirements of the refractory market.

This project is a response to the need for a systematic investigation of the accuracy, precision and reproducibility of the current EN testing standards for refractories with the aim to enhance their relevance, especially to the specific needs of SMEs. It is aiming at generating up-to-date EN testing standards as a save guidance for the producers. An extensive investigation of the current EN testing methods, designs of experiments and interlaboratory tests, more specifically collaborative tests, involving the major European refractory testing

laboratories will be the key approach to attain this objective.

à SELFREPCOAT

In all industrialised countries, the corrosion of metals results in costs amounting to around 4% of the gross national product. Accordingly, there is a significant demand for protecting these metals using efficient and durable coatings. The main objective is to develop effective and lasting protective coatings based on different self-sustaining principles to develop their synergistic effects.

The development of nanoreservoirs, based on the incorporation of corrosion retardants in nano clays which release retardants by ion exchange when the film is damaged or after water is released in the coating, appears to be a promising way to address this problem.

à FSW-PME

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a widespread technique presenting a lot of advantages (no melting, no cracks nor porosity, little deformation , high productivity, possibility of heterogeneous welding ... ) comparing to conventional welding processes . This technique is widely used for the welding of metals with a low melting point such as aluminium or copper. Encouraging results were also obtained for the welding of 314L steel. Unfortunately, its application to other materials with high melting point and heterogeneous welds remains difficult and poorly controlled. The

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

21

purpose of this research is to demonstrate the applicability of friction stir welding to materials with high melting point, mainly in cases where conventional welding techniques do not produce good results, and to master this technique from the process (development and optimisation of the parameters, welding precautions, preheating, ...) and the tools production perspectives. Indeed, the lack of availability of tools, their high cost and their limited performances are the main factors preventing the development of this technique for materials with high melting point.

à INNOHU

The project INNOHU is funded by the European MANUNET 2013 program. It aims at printing MEMS components on ceramic substrates. The inkjet technology is particularly well suited to this type of products. INNOHU must therefore face several challenges: to develop the ink formulations, identify the most suitable architectures for the active coating and finally optimize the design and functionality of the final component.

à Intense4Al

The goal of this project is to drive the reaction synthesising aluminium hydroxide in an intensified way in order to reduce the production period (from a number of days to a number of minutes), energy consumption (heat recovery) and the environmental impact (reduction of process waters), as well as the ground area taken up by the reactor. By intensifying the process, the industry aims

at increasing its production capacity while reducing implementation costs (energy, waste), in order to remain a competitive supplier and increase its market share.

à LAMAC

The LAMAC project is aimed at the development of a new fast machining technology for laser ceramics. Currently, laser machining applications primarily relate to precision cutting and drilling. Due to very low machining speeds, laser is not suitable for the manufacture of high-volume parts or complex geometry parts. Nonetheless, EMRA recently achieved a breakthrough in laser machining ceramics. By increasing the machining speed by a factor of 100 in relation to conventional laser technologies, the proposed solution can potentially compete with the standard machining technique, micro-milling. Additionally, the suggested approach offers integrated recycling of the non-machined material by also providing a more responsible management of raw materials.

The LAMAC project aims at optimizing this new technology to position it as an alternative to milling for micro-machining ceramics. This will involve close collaboration between EMRA and the UMONS mechanical engineering department, specialists in machining and metrology.

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

à NoChromeVI Hard-chrome plating is a very widely

used technique for finishing mechanical parts, providing them with high resistance to use and corrosion. Current chrome technology is based on the use of chrome acid baths and a hexavalent chromium salt. Due to its highly toxic nature, the European Union has adopted the decision to ban its use throughout the EU from 2016. It is therefore a matter of urgency for companies operating in this sector to find an alternative solution. All that being said, there is currently no commercial solution, despite the imminent banning of Cr (VI). However, from a technical point of view, taking a look at the conclusions of numerous groundwork and applied studies on this issue, there are some viable solutions. That these solutions have not gone beyond the feasibility study stage is probably related to the fact that implementing them is often more complex than the actual technology. Another reason preventing the development of current chrome-plating alternatives is the lack of response to certain significant related questions, particularly regarding the stability of alternative baths and the optimization of operating conditions. However, the ban on current chrome-plating technology leaves no other choice, and chrome-plating workshops as well as users will require an effective and complete substitute solution in the very near future.

à OPTIDRY

The drying of refractory concretes is one of the most important stages during the first heat-up of an installation. During this step, the refractory lining may be subject to damages by cracking or explosion in the worst cases if the heating is too fast. The occurrence of such damages is caused by the steam pressure in the material which becomes higher than the mechanical resistance of this one. The water presence is due to its addition during the mixing necessary to perform the setting of the hydraulic binder contained in the starting mixing.

Currently, any control system is available to ensure the integrity of the refractory lining during the first heat-up or later in service. The goal of the "OPTIDRY" project will be, at the end of this one, to offer a drying technique, for its control and optimisation, based on an acoustic and thermal parameters coupled with the mechanical properties of the material which are function of different drying stages. This original method should allow the first heat-up of a refractory installation more quickly and with safety. Ã PRISTIFLEX

Generally, durability coatings require fine characterizations of their thickness, stress states, elastic parameters and interfacial adhesion. This is obviously also important for coatings on tools. Flexibility: to reinvest the expertise of the existing cross-border network by new sensors interdigital surface characterization with additional functionality complementary PRISTIFLEX project aims. This feature offers the opportunity to characterize coatings on tools for complex shapes. Indeed, the sensors developed previously (TRANSMAT program), although effective, are limited to flat surfaces because they suffer from an inherent handicap blades piezoelectric used: they are rigid, non-deformable and fragile cold. In this project, we propose to develop flexible sensors. They will be radically different for the piezoelectric active part they will be made from new materials. Ã RENEW

This project aims at creating a network of European partners for the exchange of best practices in innovative treatments, enabling the recovery of usable materials and matter from waste, both organic and inorganic, and making this available to the business owners in the sector pilot facilities for testing processes, ideally in countries or regions where they are not currently available. EMRA is involved in the treatment of inorganic waste (slag and WEEE), particularly for recovering metals. It is also involved in the pretreatment of waste (sorting, separation and granular reduction),

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

23

regardless of the flow. By way of example, and in addition to the platform for treating sediments, EMRA's pilot facilities provide mixed dry and wet treatment loops on demand with the equipment available. Ã SPINTRONICS

The main purpose of the project SPinTronics is to achieve a major progress in bringing the inkjet technology for printed electronics from the lab to the market. This technology is already well known with classic organic inks but still in progress for inks containing mineral solid particles. This technology is meant to be disruptive; it is an additive, tool-less, multi-materials, fully digital and contactless inkjet technology. But the challenge is really huge as it means coming to compete, in the future, with the offset printing current technology, mature in this domain. The concrete goal of this research project is the study of different process parameters in order to obtain printed circuits with two different inks (dielectric and conductive) on ceramic substrates in one step. Ã CO2Green

The CO2Green project is clearly included in this perspective of

sustainable development and incorporates, from its inception, a desire to develop a low-cost technology that can be transferred to the industry sector,

maintaining its green overall outlook while still valuing CO2 at all stages as a reagent, solvent and bulking agent. It is based on the direct sequestration of CO2 and on the use of vegetable oils (issued from the indirect sequestration of CO2 by the plant) for elaborating polymer materials to isolate purposes obtained through assisted foaming with CO2. These new materials would therefore have a dual value in terms of the carbon footprint, valuing the CO2 during its production while at the same time enabling

a reduction of the emissions of CO2 used to reduce theuse of fossil energies for energy purposes. Ã MODES

The aim of this project is to provide a technical solution to the problem of soils contaminated by heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) and organic pollutants (HAP, PCB, hydrocarbon index) to be able to tackle mixed pollution. This project is based on improving a capable original technique for both solidification and stabilisation, precipitating heavy metals in an insoluble form (stabilisation) and/or encapsulating them (solidification), and fixing or decomposing organic pollutants. Ã PLACBIO

As part of the European Commission's 'Developing Markets Initiative', biobased (or biosourced) products have been identified as an emerging market with a strong growth and 'development' potential for Europe. In fact, these non-food products derived from renewable resources (such as bioplastics and biolubricants) provide an opportunity for developing an economy based on agricultural resources, reducing the dependence on petroleum resources and lessening the environmental impact of a significant portion of the chemical sector.

Using its sixth centre of competitive excellence (Greenwin), Wallonia has for its part equipped itself with the aims of building an industrial and scientific subsidiary that brings together chemistry and the environment in a way that promotes the development of biobased products. In the not too distant future, our market will be flooded with these products, largely in the areas of plastics, packaging and even lubricants.

A major difficulty encountered by the entities involved lies in knowing for certain the biosourced content of a product. Identifying the content is important for controlling incoming materials, helping to improve formula or guarantee the quality of a marketed product (for example, by using a label).

EMRA – Activities report - 2013

24

In this project, EMRA and its partners are suggesting the development of a technological platform in the Wallonia region that will make it possible to determine the biosourced content of a product. This recent technology (introduced in 2000) consists of distinguishing the original renewable carbon containing a natural amount of carbon-14 and the original fossil carbon that no longer contains 14C. By measuring out the total 14C content of a sample using the 14C dating technique, it is then possible to trace it back to its biobased content.

The platform will be made up of a device for preparing samples (the so-called 'benzene bank') and a highly-sensitive liquid scintillation technique for measuring the 14C.

à VALAVAL The issue of polluted soils is currently

prompting scientists to develop new and innovative skills for offsetting the lack of effective treatment for this waste on the European market. This project consists of an elegant alternative to standard processes for inerting soils, involving the combination of stabilisation and solidification of the clay stages contaminated by heavy metals through using a unique geopolymer-hydraulic binder that could prove highly valuable for the road sector. EMRA will define the formula and evaluate the impact of this binder on the remobilisation of heavy metals and the mechanical resistance of materials. The inerting and sustainability of this process and the reuse of the soils in road construction will be planned, particularly when the processes identified can be used directly on site.
