  • any of our recipients would not be able to stay in their

homes without the generosity of our supporters. None of our funding comes from the government or United Way. All of our support is private and local, and all of your contributions stay local and benefit our community. Local support is what keeps us strong. Cuts and changes in the Federal and State government budgets will not negatively impact our recipients. Our clients and our community can count on our services and know that we will continue to grow as the need does.

Our donors and volunteers live out the words of some of the greatest minds in history. They represent how one person CAN make a difference every day. In 2016, our volunteers drove enough miles to circle the equator ten-times, and they worked the same number of hours as 11 full time staff!

National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 23-29 this year. We want all of our volunteers to know how much we truly appreciate all that they do. #LocallyStrong

The circumstances of your life have uniquely qualified you to make a contribution. And if you don't make that contribution, nobody else can make it.

  • The Power of an Hour What a difference an hour of your life can make to someone in need. On average, it takes about one hour to deliver a Lubbock Meals on Wheels route.

In that short 60-minute time frame, you have the opportunity to brighten someones day, give someone a nutritious meal, and spend time with someone who otherwise would be alone. What better way to spend an hour?

In 2016, our dedicated volunteers logged in over 22,890 hours. Considering that we are only open Monday - Friday that is an impressive average of about 90 volunteer hours per day! Our volunteers spend their time volunteering not only to deliver meals but also help in our kitchen and office and assist with our many events and fundraisers. We could not offer any of our programs (Weekend Meals, Emergency Meals, Pet Food Program, 12 Days of Christmas), much less deliver over 700 meals a day, without the help of our over 1400 volunteers. Whether you can deliver

once a week, once a month or once a year, we can always use your help. You can deliver as often or as little as you are ableit just takes an hour and it will be the best 60 minutes of your day! Join the Lubbock Meals on Wheels volunteer force and experience the power of an hour!

All volunteers are required to attend a one-hour orientation and pass a background check. All volunteer forms can be completed on our website at www.lubbockmealsonwheels.org. Orientations are held regularly, and if your office or group would like to become corporate volunteers, orientations can also be held at your place of business. For more information, please contact us at (806) 792-7971.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels Pet Program is currently helping recipients care for 144 dogs and 100 cats-weve added almost 30 pets since the last newsletter. Thanks to your generous donations specifically to this special program, we are able to help pets and their humans stay together.

ARE YOU PART OF THE PACK?Dogs will lean against their human for many different reasons. It may be because they are anxious or in a new situation. But it is also thought that dogs lean on their humans as a sign of affection. They think of us as their protectors and no matter what the reason, lean on us because it makes them feel safe.

Dog expert Gregory Berns says that if your dog is wanting to sleep with you in your room or bed they are showing signs that your family is actually a pack and they want to be part of it.

If your dog is constantly giving you his most prized possession like mine does, this is not just a sign of affection. It is also thought this is their way of identifying you as their pack leader. Because of this they want to please you by sharing the thing they love most. Its the highest dog pack honor!Source: www.ourpassionfordogs.com

OR, ARE YOU JUST ANOTHER CAT?Research with dogs has made it very clear that dogs perceive us as being different than themselves: As soon as they see a human, they change their behavior. The way a dog plays with

a human is completely different from [the way it plays] with a dog.

Weve yet to discover anything about cat behavior that suggests they have a separate box they put us in when theyre socializing with us. They obviously know were bigger than them, but they dont seem to have adapted their social behavior much. Putting their tails up in the air, rubbing around our legs, and sitting beside us and grooming us are exactly what cats do to each other.

Cats dont [always] get on with other cats, [and people dont realize] how much that can stress them out. Other than routine visits, the most common reason cats are taken to vets is because of a wound sustained in a fight with another cat.Source: National Geographic/John Bradshaw

    PECANS

Lubbock Meals on Wheels Staff BioName (Age): Isaiah Lucio Lopez (22)Occupation: Development CoordinatorStart Date: April 20, 2017

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH LMOW? Post-grad life is a whirlwind. One day I got an email from my college advisor about a job opening at LMOW. Non-profit was something I had flirted with, so I decided to apply for the position.

DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS AND/OR PETS? I have 5 dogs back home in San Antonio. Their names are: Sammy, Chili, Chavo, Cuate (Spanish for twin), and Flor (Spanish for flower).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A NONPROFIT PROFESSIONAL? There are so many social issues in our world today. If we were to get behind one of those issues and fight for it, then we truly are making the world a better place. LMOW is caring for the community of Lubbock, who wouldnt want to be a part of that?

WHO DO YOU FIND INSPIRATIONAL? Both my father and mother. My father immigrated from Mexico in his teens and forged a life for himself, and for my mother and I. He taught me what it means to be proud of who I am. My mother is one of the sweetest and most welcoming people I know. She taught me to respect all walks of life.

YOU ARE A NEW ADDITION TO A CRAYON BOX. WHAT COLOR ARE YOU AND WHY? Serendipity Seafoam because I can be very mellow, but also very present in any moment of life.

WHAT CAN YOU SIMPLY NOT RESIST? A big bowl of Pho with my friends.

A PENGUIN WALKS THROUGH THAT DOOR RIGHT NOW WEARING A SOMBRERO. WHAT DOES HE SAY AND WHY IS HE HERE? He would probably ask me where the best margarita is because he wants to cool off, then I would offer to take him because who wouldnt want to share a drink with a penguin wearing a sombrero?

WHAT WOULD I FIND IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR RIGHT NOW? Pizza Rolls

WHAT IS YOUR MIDDLE NAME? Emmanuel

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE DISH THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY WONT EAT?I refuse to be near Pigs feet. I dont know how people are capable of eating those.

Merci Beaucoup for a wonderful Mardi Gras, 2017!

Lubbock Meals on Wheels Mardi Gras, 2017 was dazzling, thanks to all of the local support that we received. This year we raised over $100,000, (an all-time high), and we had over 1,500 people in attendance. There was so much going on with thirty-nine restaurants featuring their food, live music by Element, table-side entertainers, a large silent auction, the activity area, and the always fun Kristin+Camera photo booth. The Mardi Gras King and Queen (Paul Tubbs and Heidi Waggoner) reigned over the event in true Mardi Gras style. SAVE THE DATE NOW for next years Mardi Gras to be held on Tuesday February 27th, 2018. Many thanks to the followingyou made this event wonderful!

    Lubbock Meals on Wheels | LMOW @LubbockMOW | #LetsDoLunch #MoreThanaMeal

MISSION STATEMENT Respecting the dignity of every human being, no matter their need or physical condition, Lubbock Meals On Wheels will provide nutritious, home-delivered meals to those who are homebound, elderly, or disabled. We shall seek to break the social isolation experienced by the homebound, by providing warm, caring, friendly contact through our volunteers.

BRING YOUR ALUMINUM CANS TO LUBBOCK MEALS ON WHEELS! Regular trips are made to recycle these materials, and the money received provides funds for our

programs. You can help the environment and Lubbock Meals on Wheels by bringing your aluminum cans to 2304 34th Street during office hours, Monday Friday, 8a.m. - 4:30p.m. Special thanks to

Jarvis Metals Recycling, Inc. for providing a trailer for our program.

    * TRIVIA! * About 75 percent of all aluminum ever made is still in use, thanks to recycling. (Source: Aluminum Association) * TIP! * Got a tough dishwashing mess? Use wadded up aluminum foil to scrub it away!

LMOW has an answer to that age-old question, Whats for dinner? Monday - Friday from 8:00am 4:30pm you can come by our office and pick up a house made quiche for your evening meal. It goes straight from the freezer to the oven. We have seven varieties to choose from: Green Chile Chicken, Chicken & Broccoli, Ham & Cheese, Italian Sausage, Spinach & Bacon, Spinach & Mushroom (vegetarian) & Mexicana (vegetarian). Quiches are $14.50 for one/two for $28.00 plus tax. With your frequent quiche card you buy 10 and get one free!

For more information or to place a large order, simply call 806-792-7971.

Longer days mean you want to be outside, not in the kitchen!

Thanks, in large part, to a very generous donation from the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation, our long-anticipated expansion/renovation is in full swing! We expect our construction to be completed by the end of 2017. Follow our website and social media to watch the progress!
