An- nually, we collectively engage in the process of introspection both on an individual level and a communal one for our High Ho- ly Day period commencing with the Selichot service prior to Rosh Hashanah, and carrying us at least through Yom Kippur, and through Sukkot if we “stretch” the limits through Rabbinic lenience. RABBI’S MESSAGE: “One More Chance”

By Rabbi David Barnett

One of my favorite pictures shows a runner jogging along a

beach, with the beautiful purple-blue colorings of the initial trans-

formation from night to dawn, with the inscription underneath

saying “the miracle of dawn shows us that God, in his infinite

mercy, is giving mankind one more chance.” Indeed, each and

every day gives us the opportunity to start anew, refreshed, with

rekindled hope that this day can become a magic one, imbued

with significant hope, new beginnings, and deeper meaning. An-

nually, we collectively engage in the process of introspection

both on an individual level and a communal one for our High Ho-

ly Day period commencing with the Selichot service prior to

Rosh Hashanah, and carrying us at least through Yom Kippur,

and through Sukkot if we “stretch” the limits through Rabbinic

lenience.

Throughout our daily liturgy we remind ourselves on a daily basis

of both our potential greatness through the power of our connec-

tion with community and heritage, as well as the more humbling

side of the limitations permeating human existence. In that con-

nection we daily pose rhetorical questions such as “What is our

strength? What is our virtue? What justifications can we give for

our claims of righteousness compared to you, O God?” Yet, in

the next paragraph we affirm our connection to the merit of the

patriarchs (and matriarchs), and the vision and values they es-

poused along with millions of others through the development of

our traditions taking place over the course of millennia. Thus,

within the limitations of our time and days, whatever they may be

allotted to be, we have the capacity of creating infinite meaning.

In many ways we have an advantage over many other species in

the animal kingdom. The Seattle Times of Friday, August 24,

2012, thought it beautiful and important enough to print a picture

on the front page of a dragonfly hanging from a

leaf in the sunshine as it was emerging from its

nymph stage, drying its wings before taking

flight near a pond on Guemes Island, in the

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE...Celebrations Continue

August marked a month for birthday celebrations at Temple Emanuel. First

the congregation celebrated the 90th birthday of Esther Leiderman. Her fami-

ly from all over the country joined her Temple Emanuel family to pray and

mark this beautiful moment in time. Later in August, Pearl Glassman cele-

brated another milestone at Temple Emanuel, her 98th birthday, with friends

from throughout Tidewater. To see the joy on Esther’s and Pearl’s faces was

heartwarming for all who were present.

So, what is on the agenda in the coming days? On Shabbat, September 8,

our entire community will celebrate Rabbi Barnett’s one year anniversary

with us. We will also honor our new board members that joined us this year,

and we will thank those members who have moved off the board. We will

also present a plaque in memory of our beloved long term Gabbi and mem-

ber, Carolyn Osman, and we will acknowledge the Pincus Paul Foundation,

that was so generous to Temple Emanuel last year, with a plaque. Lastly Dr.

Steve Warsof and I will make a special presentation of a gift that we brought

back from Israel at the special kiddish luncheon.

Then New Year is right around the corner. Sam Glaser returns as our cantor

and will perform a concert benefiting Temple Emanuel at Beth El. I hope to

see all of you at High Holiday services and at the concert. You can help

Temple Emanuel by buying an ad in the concert booklet, even if a small

greeting.

I want to update all of our members regarding two important matters that

Temple Emanuel faces. Despite our best intentions and tireless efforts on

behalf of Rabbi Barnett, the Rabbinical Assembly has advised us that it will

not permit Rabbi Barnett to remain with Temple Emanuel beyond the con-

clusion of his second year with us. Rabbi Barnett joined our congregation as

an Interim Rabbi, one whose term is usually limited to one year and whose

mission is to help a synagogue transition after a difficult experience. The

RA, which oversees all conservative rabbis in America and in which Rabbi

Barnett is a member and is obligated to follow its guidelines, graciously

granted us an additional year by permitting Rabbi Barnett to remain with us

for a second year. However, as an interim rabbi, after July 2013, it will be his

time to leave. We did discuss our options with Rabbi Barnett and with the

United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism (the organization which pro-

vides guidance and support to synagogues like us) and concluded that we

must abide by the RA’s decision. While we are all disappointed to have Rab-

bi Barnett leave us, we are prepared to commence our search for a new rab-

bi, (a non-Interim rabbi) immediately after the High Holidays (the first oppor-

tunity that synagogues are permitted to do so). We feel confident that the

USCJ and the RA are sincerely interested in helping us find the right Rabbi

for Temple Emanuel. If any member would like to serve on the Rabbi Search

Committee, please let me know.

President’s Message Continued...

The second issue is still under develop-

ment. One of the founding members of

the JCC approached the Temple about

us moving to the campus. While we

initially expressed little interest in doing

so, we felt that out of community alle-

giance, we owed them at least the op-

portunity to show us what the JCC had

in mind and how it would benefit our

members. Some of your officers had a

meeting and a visit at the JCC and

were favorably impressed with some of

the facilities. While we are a long way

from presenting the membership with

any recommendation, the Board of Di-

rectors has requested that the officers

continue the fact finding expedition at

this point. We will continue to update

you on any new developments in this

area.

My prayer for this New Year is that all

of you continue to support your Temple

in all of its endeavors. If you have any

questions, feel free to contact any of

your officers or directors.

Religious School News Shalom, As we start the “NEW” year of 5773 there are so many new things happening in the Religious School. We have a new Education Chair, Helen Sissel, and we have some new teachers. We have a new fellow Adam Wassell from Greensboro, N.C. from the Institute for Southern Jewish Life (ISJL). Plus we have some new families! Our Education Committee is planning many activities and fundraisers for this coming year. I would like to thank all the parents that have volunteered to be on the committee. Also register online for UHS. The first day of UHS is September 5 at 4:15. Register your children and grandchildren for the High Holy Days with our professional sitters. We will have sitters in the Religious School building during both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. We will also have sitters during the evening for Kol Nidre services. The sitters will be in the regular sanctuary that night with the children. I will have games/toys set up for them. Don’t forget to come back in the evening of Yom Kippur for Neilah services and the lite stick parade for all the kids. It is the highlight of the day! I would also like to thank everyone in our temple and around the local community that helped house Camp Ramah Darom kids when they came to town during their 10-day trip up the east coast in July and stayed in Virginia Beach on their way back to Georgia. The 2nd Annual Challah Making Storytime was a great deal of fun. Thanks for all who came out and

if you missed it, we will do it again next summer. We are busy preparing the schedule for the 2012-13 school

year storytimes. Look for exciting new stories and crafts and maybe a few movies, too. Our library is open

during Religious School hours, and you can check out up to 5 books at a time. We have books for tweens,

teens and adults too. Just remember to check them out and return promptly. Looking forward to seeing you

in the library. ~Donna Grant

the nymph stage, which can take up to four years to complete. When fully grown and ready to emerge, the

dragonfly climbs out of the water and sheds its skin, leaving the exoskeleton stuck to the stem or leaf for a

long time. Then, typically the adult dragonfly lives for a period of just a few months. That adult period of its

lifespan then amounts to roughly perhaps less than five percent of its total lifespan. We have it better than

the dragonflies. The functional and vital period of a human lifespan spans a much greater percentage of our

total lifespan, and with increasing technology and improved medical innovation and care, many will be fortu-

nate to see that percentage continue to increase. What then will be our contributions to others, and how will

we measure its meaning and significance not only for ourselves, but also for our children and our posterity

and greater community?

We’ll be able to explore these questions in depth during our coming High Holy Day adventure, during this,

my second year with Temple Emanuel in this special community. I am looking forward to sharing the bimah

with Cantor Sam Glaser once more, hoping that the joy and fervor of our prayers, melodies, and thoughts

expressed will revitalize and recharge all of us as we embark upon another year together. While sitting in the

public library on Mercer Island, Washington while composing this message to you, on a beautiful almost

cloudless Seattle day with low humidity with temperatures in the low 70’s, somehow the High Holy Days still

seem a ways away. Yet, by the time you read this, they will be nigh upon us, as this year they arrive earlier

than last year. Therefore let me take this opportunity to send all of you my best wishes for a “Shanah Tovah,

M’tukah, U’m’vorechet”, a “Good, Sweet, and Blessed Year” ahead.
