2 2011-12 MURRAY STATE RACERS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Racers Women’s Basketball

GAME NOTESThe GameThe Murray State women’s basketball team will conclude their four-game road swing with a stop at its first ranked opponent since the 2008-09 campaign. The Racers will travel to Louisville, Ky., to face No. 11 Louisville at the KFC YUM! Center at 6 p.m. (CST).

Scouting LouisvilleThe Cardinals are 6-1 on the season and have won their last five games, including two wins over Ohio Valley Conference opponents; Eastern Kentucky (W, 77-53) and Austin Peay (W, 78-60).

Louisville has a strong offensive output on the season, with an average of over 70 points per game. This includes five players with double-digit point averages. Monique Reid leads the team with 16.8 points per outing while shooting 63.4 (26-of-41) percent from the field. Shoni Schimmel is next on the list with 13.0 points per game, with Becky Burke contributing 12.9 points, Bria Smith 11.6 points and Cierra Warren adding 10.1 points per game. Warren leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and adds a .604 shooting pace. Burke and Schimmel are the team’s top three-point shooters, with .422 (19-of-45) and .361 (13-of-36) marks on the season, respectively.

The Cardinals are out-scoring their opponents by 11.4 points per game and out-rebounding them by 73 boards per game. The team has a strong shooting percentage, at 42.4 (183-of-432) and 33.3 (38-of-114) from beyond the arc.

The SeriesThe meeting at the YUM! Center will be the 23rd in the all-time series that dates back to 1972, with the Cardinals leading the series 14-8. However, the teams have not played each other since the 2004-05 campaign when UL earned a 97-45 win in Louisville. The last time that the Racers earned a win in the series was Jan. 28, 1982. The Cardinals are one of four teams that MSU has faced from the Big East, going 8-18 against the conference.

First Double-Double of the YearSenior Kayla Lowe recorded the team’s first double-double of the season at Alabama A&M, with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The last double-double for MSU was tallied by Jessica Winfrey (March 2, 2011) against Austin Peay.

Robinson ReemergingJunior Mariah Robinson broke a 32 game scoring streak against Mid-Continent and then failed to record a point at Ball State. When she got back on the scoreboard at Alabama A&M she made up for lost time, recording a season-best 25 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the charity stripe. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native added a team-high 16 points at Saint Louis, including a 3-of-3 mark from the charity stripe.

Three Point SeasonThe Racers have made 51 triples in the first six games of the season, 21.9 percent of the school record for the most three’s in a season (232). MSU has a season-high of 15 made in a single game (vs. Mid-Con) and has recorded the same or more triples than its opponents in every game this season.

Going for No. 500/50The Racers are currently 491-631-2 in their 47th season of basketball. With nine more wins the team will record its 500 victory. The 500th win for MSU would make the Racers the sixth team in the conference to record over 500 wins. MSU would join Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, SIU Edwardsville and Tennessee Tech in the club. With three more wins head coach Rob Cross will also reach his 50th career win.

Burgess OVC Newcomer of the Week x TwoRed-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess was named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second consecutive week, Nov. 22. The Memphis, Tenn., led the team with 18.0 points per game last week. She tallied a career-best six steals and nine field goals against Ball State. Burgess also added five steals against Mid-Continent and shot 42.5 percent from the floor over the two games.

High Pressure DefenseThe new high-pressure defense that the Racers are playing this season has forced three of their five opponents into 30+ turnovers. This is the first time since at least 1996-97, when individual game stats are available, that the team has forced more than one opponent into 30+ turnovers. The most forced during that span was 39 (Nov. 18, 2009) by Mid-Continent. So far this season MSU has forced Mid-Con into 33, Ball State into 32 and Evansville into 31. Overall the Racers have forced 151 turnovers and have committed just 95.

Jessica’s Missing for the SeasonBoth of the Racers players named Jessica, Jessica Winfrey and Jessica Holder, will miss the 2011-12 campaign due to injury. Winfrey was a key starter for the Racers last year, while Holder was sidelined for most of the 2010-11 campaign due to injury as well.
