Expert AnalysisBy Brad Free

BEST BET: Harbored Memories (7th race)

First Race

1. Bet On Mookie 2. Olympic Legend 3. Mackinnon

Based on his runner-up debut, ~BET ON MOOKIE^ merits horse-to-beat status in the first turf sprint of the So Cal season for maiden 2-year-olds. 'MOOKIE ran well first out. Hedueled and put away even-money favorite Ikigai, then got collared. Solid effort, easy work since, and pedigree that okays turf. Trainer Peter Miller won with 26 percent of second-start maiden 2yos the past five years. First-time starter ~OLYMPIC LEGEND^ has worked fast, and is bred for grass. The son of Street Boss is a full sibling to locally based turfmiler Ellie Arroway and a half to turf maiden Titrate. 'LEGEND broke slowly in his gate work May 24, but was quick from the gate his most recent work June 3 (works viewedonline). Firsters from this stable typically come out firing. ~MACKINNON^ is likely to improve second out. His pre-debut works were only average; he finished a distant fourth. With a race under his belt and grass pedigree (by American Pharoah, produced by a Scat Daddy mare), expect a move-up. FLASH OF GENIUS, stablemate of the top choice, reportedly has been showing speed in morning works at San Luis Rey Downs..

Second Race

1. Cant Stop This Man 2. Silver Moon Road 3. Honor Among Men

Claimed from a better-than-looked third-place debut at Keeneland, ~CANT STOP THIS MAN^ can post a minor upset moving up in class from maiden-20 to maiden-50/75 forhis first in California. His debut (KEE, April 18, race 8) is worth watching. Off slowly from the rail, he sped forward and was hard-held racing behind and between rivals, waitedfor room to develop while blocked and full of run, cut the corner, angled out and finished evenly. Promising debut. He appears to have trained well in California for new trainerPhil D'Amato, drew the outside post and should improve with a clean trip. ~SILVER MOON ROAD^ enters with the top last-out figure and could vie for favoritism dropping tomaiden-75 from a pair of runner-up finishes in maiden special-weights at Golden Gate. He subsequently scratched from a maiden-50 on May 21, but worked twice since and enteredback for $62.5k. He is racing for the first time over the surface on which he regularly trains. ~HONOR AMONG MEN^ drops following a disappointing fifth-place comeback at GG.That was his first start since summer 2019, improvement possible second start back. ALLABOUTTHEMONEY drops in class, goes route to sprint and makes his first start sincebeing gelded.

Third Race

1. Majestic Gigi 2. Navy Queen 3. Maggie's Magic

Notwithstanding a course profile that is against her front-running style, speedball ~MAJESTIC GIGI^ gets the call. The speed of the field, she drops in class, and her runner-up finishtwo back might be enough. But she faces a challenge to carry her speed six furlongs. With the rails at 30 feet, only one of 19 turf sprints this meet at the distance was won by thepacesetter while 14 of 19 were won from the middle or back of the field. At 6f, it is a closers-friendly course with the rails out. And yet, 'GIGI is the one to catch. ~NAVY QUEEN^could sit second behind the speed, and therefore would get first run if the top choice falters. Her form is decent including a runner-up finish at this level two back. ~MAGGIE'SMAGIC^ was re-claimed by her first trainer last out. The honest filly fires every start; her pedigree is fine for turf. Progeny of Tannersmyman are average on turf, while the dam of'MAGIC won on turf and produced two turf winners.

Fourth Race

1. Gerlach's 2. Sir Flatter 3. Very Irish

First time long, first time at the maiden-20 bottom class level, ~GERLACH'S^ is the tepid choice to win this dirt mile. He finished in the money both recent dirt sprints vs. small-field higher-level maidens; not much here to beat. ~SIR FLATTER^ similarly drops to the bottom for the first time. Although he finished last his only dirt route, that was anuncomfortable trip in a maiden-80 against better than the maiden-20s meets here. ~VERY IRISH^ has something the top pair lack. That is, proven form around two turns. He finishedsecond last out while nearly three lengths clear of third. Logical contender in an apparently weak field. MARKSMAN ON TARGET might be ranked too low by this handicapper. His 61 Beyer last out is the highest recent figure. However, that figure was earned on turf. In his only dirt start, he was non-competitive.

Fifth Race

1. Storm the Bastille 2. Truth Seeker 3. Snazzy Dresser

~STORM THE BASTILLE^ drops to $25k claiming as the horse to beat in a turf mile with plenty of pace to flatter his closing rally. Although one mile seems shorter than he prefers,he has won at this distance and will rally late. He changed trainers since raced. ~TRUTH SEEKER^ may prefer dirt, but his recent form is solid and his off-the-pace style suits thisspeed-filled field. ~SNAZZY DRESSER^ wired a similar field two starts back, then lost his best chance last out when he broke slowly. A need-the-lead front-runner, he faces achallenging pace scenario because OUTLAW and START A RUNNIN have similar front-running styles. The race really does set up for the top choice.

Sixth Race

1. Consider Me Gone 2. Nobu 3. Big Bell

This maiden-30 for 3yo fillies came up deep. The one-two choices are droppers, ~CONSIDER ME GONE^ from maiden-45/50 and ~NOBU^ from special-weight. The lukewarmpreference is 'GONE, who returns to the dirt surface on which she ran the best race of her three-start career. Her comeback one month ago was blah, but the turf provides a built-inalibi. Back on dirt, speed to run at, maybe she will get there on the drop. But she will have to catch NOBU, who drops in class after showing speed and fading all three starts. Shewas listed as a vet scratch from a similar maiden-30 on May 21, and shows just one recorded work since. But she has ability, gets in light with the hot apprentice rider, and will beforwardly placed. ~BIG BELL^ makes her career debut for a stable that pops with these occasionally; the presence of the meet's leading rider is reason for a closer look. KIND BUTSHE LIES fits off her third-place finish two back, while BIG MOON will be rolling late.

Seventh Race

1. Harbored Memories 2. Gator Shining 3. Wyfire

Page 5: Racing Data Provided by the Daily Racing Form 1762959

~HARBORED MEMORIES^, sharp turf-sprint maiden winner last out, gets the call in this N1X turf sprint on the same course. 'MEMORIES faced good company this season,runner-up his first three starts including seconds to subsequent Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World and subsequent graded stakes-placed Dream Shake. 'MEMORIES foundhis calling on turf. He has tactical speed, an outside post, and should fire right back. But opposite the rails-at-30 six-furlong stats referred to in race 3, the same setting at this six andone-half furlong distance has been more favorable to speed: three of the last seven won by pacesetters. ~GATOR SHINING^ is back doing what he does best, which is sprint. Hishighly rated third two back on this course compares favorably to the top choice. He also is a first-time gelding. ~WYFIRE^ makes his first start since fall, when he finished second ina modest stakes race for 2yos on this course. Gelded since, Lasix on, productive trainer-jockey combo. JAZZ HANDS has won 3 of 5 including a dominating Cal-bred win last out.

Eighth Race

1. Active Account 2. Revisionist 3. Head for Business

The 4yo first-time starter ~ACTIVE ACCOUNT^ has trained like he means business in this Cal-bred maiden-50. He looked good in a three-way team work Jan 3 (work viewedonline); trainer Dean Pederson pops with an occasional first-time starter. ~REVISIONIST^ ran well in his fourth-place debut and is likely to improve second time out. He brokeslowly first out and was climbing early, uncorked a middle move through the turn, and finished evenly on the inside. Solid debut. With a clean break second time out, he shouldimprove a ton. ~HEAD FOR BUSINESS^ drops from Cal-bred special-weight to Cal-bred maiden-claiming, and moves from turf to dirt. He is quick enough to establish positionbreaking from the rail.
