Creating Learning Connections with Today’s Tech-Savvy StudentThe Digital Child Arrives At School

Anyone over 45 years old would remember the time before cable television and computers. Similarly, anyone over 35 years old would recall the time before digital videogames and the Internet. However, anyone younger than 25 years of age has only ever lived in the digital world their entire life!

Video games, television, cellular devices, and instantaneous Web-based communication, for hours on end each day, regularly stimulate the frontal lobe of children’s brains. One of the common causes of ‘boredom’ in the classroom is students’ perception that the delivery of curriculum is irrelevant to how they learn. This raises the question: “Whywork hard when what you’re working on doesn’t seem to matter?” (1. Sheskey cited in Jacobs 2010). Teachers today face the challenge of making standardized curriculumrich and relevant to students who have instant access to anything that they want to learn on their own.

The contemporary classroom is a place of great change, which is driven by the background and skills that tech-savvy students bring to the classroom. The classroom settingnow contains a range of technology such as iPads, desktops, notebooks, interactive devices, wireless connectivity to networks and the Internet (2. Richardson, 2014, pp.6-8).With this in mind, it is time, for ‘us’ (teachers) to develop strategies and build authentic learning connections with our students. Embedding and engaging students within aninteractive classroom that embraces tools that they use everyday will help teachers make those strong connections.

It is important to be mindful of the fact that while students today can access all the information they need to know, they must learn how to ask the right questions. We nolonger gather knowledge to build intellect. It’s more about how we apply knowledge to ask the right questions to solve the world’s problems (Sheskey cited in Jacobs 2010).Technology has the potential to engage students and give them more opportunity for deeper thinking. It is the responsibility of teachers to train themselves to ask deeper-levelquestions that build the capacity of students to develop better problem-solving skills.

Technology also challenges the perceived need to maintain control of the traditional classroom, and can often limit opportunity to engage with and use powerful tools forlearning (November cited in Jacobs 2010). As educators we are now required to rethink control in our classrooms. Eventually we must realize that avoiding the use of excitingtechnologies students wish to experience at school will only increase the disconnect that many students currently feel as they enter the classroom (November cited in Jacobs2010). Of course, the fear is that these tools have the potential to be disruptive to the traditional management of the classroom. However, this will only be the case in thecurrent culture of ‘industrialized’ classrooms. What if we were to transform the culture of teaching and learning to adapt to the power of technology? After all, our students aregrowing up at a time when they have instant access to the Web for information and global communication in their immediate reach.

Many educators struggle with the content that students can encounter when using technology. Reports in the media warn us about online predators, identity theft, cyberbullying, and more. Pornography and hate messages can be found with only a few mouse clicks. This isn’t the first time that these issues have come to the forefront.Content delivered through television, books, movies and magazines has been debatable for years. Regulations have been introduced to help parents and teachers deal withcontent delivered in these formats, to the point where we have become so comfortable with these regulations that we no longer worry about them. We put ratings on television shows that tell parents that the content might be inappropriate, age restrictions on movies or on magazines to prevent them from being availableto minors. We have learned to deal with this media, but what about the Internet? Many students are carrying digital devices right now that, at times, have access to just aboutanything – both good and bad. It is our responsibility to teach students the social responsibility of using these powerful tools to avoid abuse and distraction.

As educators we need to empower students to tap into the tools they want to use to become more involved in their own learning by providing opportunities for students tomake valuable contributions to their learning community (November cited in Jacobs 2010). This can be achieved with a balanced vision of teaching and learning. The realproblem is not adding technology to the current organisation of the classroom, but, more so, changing the culture of teaching and learning.

If our children are to grow up to make important contributions to society, it is essential that we provide them with the tools, and experiences across the curriculum. This goalwill require a new culture of teaching and learning that engages students as contributors. Students have already chosen tools such as MySpace and Facebook for their owncommunications and social interaction (November cited in Jacobs 2010). Now is the time to take elements of these tools and provide students with the appropriate rolemodels of how to use them to make important and meaningful contributions to their own school and beyond.

The key question is not “What technology should we buy for our schools?” The more important question is one of control: “Can we change our traditional culture of teachingand learning so that students are empowered to take more responsibility for making important contributions to their own learning and to their learning community?” If we canmake this change, we have the opportunity to expand the quality of learning in our schools. In particular, we might come to the realization that our students’ contributions canraise the level of engagement and provide more depth and rigor to the curriculum than was ever possible before.

Get Real

Among some of Jesus’ last words were these:

Father forgive them for they know not what they do…

Here Jesus signifies one of the most important goals in life: to know yourself, and understand. And he recognizes, sadly, that these men who crucify him with such convictionand enthusiasm, neither know themselves nor understand the shameful and terrifying thing that they are doing. They are, locked in a sealed bubble of religious blindness anddeafness from which only forgiveness - only unconditional love – can release them.

The enormity of their act is lost on them. And they are lost in mindless unreality. Read more...
