And this invisible menacewill affect nearly everybody reading this ad.The danger is pollution -but not the ordinarykind. In fact, ten years ago, we didn't have thisnew kind of pollution. Let us explain.Ten years ago, cars didn't havecatalyticconverters. Today, thesecatalyticconverters"grindup" thecar exhaust intoparticles sosmall theyformmicronsoot, and micron sootis so fine, it can beeasilyabsorbedinto yourlungs . Even the EPA has stated, "Because it issofine, suchsoot particles stay longer andcausemore damage in the respiratory tract.". Ten years ago, homes were able to"breathe" or exchangeair betweentheout-doorsandindoors four or fivetimesaday.Today, withour well-insulated energy-consci-ous buildingsour homes literally createandtrap pollution that we breathe unwittingly.OTHERPROBLEMSThereare other problems too. Add the dailysoot, dust, smokeandother impuritiesin theair and you've created pollution problemsevenworsethan they were ten years ago-sobad in fact that environmental groups areespecially concerned over this new "timebomb"'lurking in our environment. But Americaningenuityhasn't beensittingstill . The secondtype of noise-reduction systemis re-ferred to as non-complementary, orsingle-ended; it operates during play-back only. As a result, it does not requireany special enciodingof the programmaterial.Forconsumeraudi oequipment , themost popular noise-reduction system todate has been the Dolby B system, which falls into the first (comple -mentary) category. WhileDolbyB pro-vides only 10 dBof noise reductionathighfrequencies (not enoughtomaketapehiss totallyinaudible) , it' swidelyacceptedbecauseit isa"compatible"noise-reduct ion system. That is, onecanlistentoaDolby-encodedprogramsourcewithout usingaDolbydecoderandstill findthemusicacceptable. However, thefact that Dolby B doesnot render tape hiss completely inaudiblehas promptedother designers tocomeupwith companding systems that de-liver greater amount s of noise reduc-tion. Asshown in Fig. I. the ear is most sensitiveto noise inthe 600-Hz to6-kHz fre-quency range. For this reason. whenmeasuringnoise content in a system. aweighting filter is usually inserted in themeasuring instrument to give better cor-relationbetwe en the measuredsignal-to-noi se rati o and the subjecti ve im-pre ssion of noise. Whena CCIR/ARMweightingfilter (commonl yusedwhenmea suringsignal-to-noiseratios of cas-sett e tape and decks) is used. it will yieldnoise-reduction numbersof bet ween14and18 dB when the bandwidth of a sys-temisrestrictedto IkHz withsingle-pole andtwo-pole low-passfilters. asshown in the curves of Fig. 2.91filter response curv es that are obtainedby varying the control voltage from 0 to1.0.
