UPDATE OF OFDMA TDD WMAN IN REVISION 9 OF RECOMMENDATION ITU-R M.1457

1 Source information

This contribution was developed by IEEE Project 802®, the Local and Metropolitan Area Network Standards Committee (“IEEE 802”), an international standards development committee organized under the IEEE and the IEEE Standards Association (“IEEE-SA”).

The content herein was prepared by a group of technical experts in IEEE 802 and industry and was approved for submission by the IEEE 802.16™ Working Group on Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks, the IEEE 802.18 Radio Regulatory Technical Advisory Group, and the IEEE 802 Executive Committee, in accordance with the IEEE 802 policies and procedures, and represents the view of IEEE 802.

2 Background This contribution responds to liaison input from ITU-R Working Party 5D on “Status of Revision 9 for Recommendation ITU-R M.1457” (denoted 5D/TEMP/172, and included as Attachment 6.7 of 5D/413).

3 Comments of Proposed Update to Section 5.6 We take note that WP 5D has proposed a modified version of Section 5.6 as proposed by IEEE. We confirm that this content is technically correct. IEEE has two editorial concerns with the materials.

(a) Renaming of Radio Interface

Given the edits proposed by WP 5D, we suggest that the radio interface be renamed as “OFDMA WMAN.” This would be more logical and consistent, and less confusing.

(b) Editorial Structure of Section 5.6

We accept the content ordering proposed by WP 5D. However, we are concerned that the proposed editorial numbering of Section 5.6 is highly unusual and confusing. The following represents the high-level table of contents of the WP 5D proposal:

5.6 IMT-2000 OFDMA TDD WMAN5.6a TDD component

5.6a.1 Overview of the radio interface5.6b FDD component

5.6b.1 Overview of the radio interface5.6a.2 Detailed specification of the radio interface - TDD5.6b.2 Detailed specification of the radio interface - FDD

This is not a standard heading flow. Notice that both 5.6a and 5.6b are not contiguous but instead split into separate sections. We believe that the following section numbering would be logical, coherent, and compatible with automatic word processing numbering:

5.6 IMT-2000 OFDMA WMAN5.6.1 Overview of the radio interface

5.6.1.1 TDD component5.6.1.2 FDD component

5.6.2 Detailed specification of the radio interface5.6.2.1 TDD component5.6.2.2 FDD component

For a complete outline, please see Attachment 2.

4 Proposal

With these two editorial concerns in mind, we propose an alternative version of Section 5.6, as provided in Attachment 2.
