Prime MinisterNarendra Modi appealed to businesses to keeppaying their workers, including an estimated 140million migrant labourers. But that didn’t happen, andmost of the workers were left with little money andfood. State governments announced that they will

open centres to feed thses people, but were overwhelmed and most saw miles-long. With no prospect ofincome, they took long journeys to go back to their villages. Some travelled for a few hundred kilometres, whileothers covered more than a thousand to go home. They weren’t always alone - some had young children andothers had pregnant wives, and the life they had built for themselves packed into their ragtag bags. They facedhunger, extreme temperatures, a ruthless police that often acted violently to make them stop, fatigue, diseaseand a seemingly apathetic administration with its inadequate measures to help them. The TV programs on ourpartner stations in India as well BBC World News TV aimed at bringing out the stories being captured on India’snumerous highways to an audience fed on a diet of often communal and jingoist content.
