RadiologicTechnology

Radiologic Technologist is a healthcare professional responsible for the use of ionizing radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Also called/known as radiographer who performs radiographic procedures and techniques that produce images needed for diagnosis and treatment of diseases at the request of a licensed medical doctor. The Radiologist, a medical specialist, who is a member of the Philippine College of Radiology interprets these images to help the clinician make a diagnosis.

Radiologic Technology Education

Associate in Radiologic Technology (A.R.T.) is a 3-year program which includes a 2-year didactic study in Physics, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Radiographic Techniques and Positioning and a 1-year clinical internship training program in hospitals. A graduate of the program will be conferred the title of X-ray Technologist after passing the licensure examination given by the Board of Radiologic Technology through the Professional Regulation Commission.

Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology (B.S.R.T.) is a 4-year program which includes a 3-year didactic study in Physics, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Radiographic Techniques and Positioning. It also includes the Radiologic Sciences - Diagnostic Radiography,

Diagnostic Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Radiation Therapy. A 1-year clinical internship training program in hospitals completes the program. A graduate will be conferred the title of Radiologic Technologist after passing the licensure examination given by the Board of Radiologic Technology through the Professional Regulation Commission.

Scope of Practice (RA 7431)In General, Radiologic and X-ray

Technologists:Perform imaging of the human body

using state of the art and powerful imaging instruments or x- ray equipments for diagnosis or treatment of diseases.

Assess patient’s condition with a clear understanding of human anatomy and physiology, pathology, medical terminology and apply radiographic techniques and procedures with a high degree of accuracy to produce optimal radiographic images for accurate interpretation.

Utilize and maintain knowledge of radiation protection and safety to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure of the patient during x-ray examination.

Specific:• X-ray Technologist - the practice

includes technical application of x-rays in the diagnosis of diseases and injuries in Diagnostic Radiography, Fluoroscopy, and Mammography.

• Radiologic Technologist - the practice includes the technical application of radiation such as x-rays, beta rays, gamma rays, ultrasound and radiofrequency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the following areas of Radiography and Fluoroscopy:

- Diagnostic Radiology - Magnetic Resonance Imaging- Computed Tomography - Mammography- Interventional Radiology - Nuclear Medicine- Ultrasonography - Radiation Therapy- Lithotripsy for kidney stones - Bone densitometryX-ray of the chest shows a pneumonia at the right upper lobe and a
