Year 11 Parent/Guardian Assessment Guide
2017-18
1
2
September 2017 Dear Parent/Guardian Re: Assessment in Year 11 Everybody involved with schools will be thinking about the year ahead. Many students will know exactly what lays ahead, others may not. It is a time when students and perhaps parents/guardians get a little anxious about examinations and other assessments. This is perfectly normal. As a school community, our thoughts are with those students who are at this vital stage in their journey through school. This booklet can be used by both student and parent and will hopefully address any questions or concerns they may have. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the information is clear, if after reading this information you have any further questions, contact details for each subject can be found at the back. You may also find assessment documents on the school website helpful. All subject departments have supplied details of the controlled assessments and examinations in Year 11. You will see that examinations for some of Year 11 begin in November, others will take place after Christmas. The majority of the examinations will take place in the Summer term. Details about the latter will be distributed in the New Year. Other key dates are below: Progress Report 1 – mid-October 2017 Full Written Reports – early January 2018 Progress Report 2 – late March 2018 As well as the reports, the Year 11 Parent Consultation Evening will be held on Wednesday 7 February 2018. Our Year 11 Options Evening will be held on Wednesday 20th December 2017. This is when you will be able to accompany your son/daughter and visit subjects to discuss post 16 Options in our 6th Form. All pupils will sit assessments throughout the year. Students will need to manage a variety of controlled assessments or coursework, as well as having to prepare for examinations. This guide is designed to help both pupils and parents/guardians to plan carefully to meet the challenges ahead. External examinations will run during the month of January and then in the summer towards the end of June. It is therefore imperative that holidays must not be booked within the examination periods. It is vital over the next 10 months that students miss as little school as possible, other than for genuine illness. An information pack for the examinations can be found on the School website. All students will be provided with examination information and an individual timetable. Students will need to talk to their subject teachers to ensure they are aware of which examinations they are entered for and the suitable areas to revise. Those students who require intervention in subjects, will be invited to attend focussed subject sessions. We would appreciate your support in making sure your son/daughter, if identified, attends these sessions. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Yours faithfully
Richard Jenkins Assistant Headteacher-Curriculum/ARR

Assessment: Weighting? When?
There are two tiers of entry for each of the four skills. Students can be entered for a mixture of higher and foundation tiers. These tiers of entry are decided by the teacher following assessments throughout the GCSE course. The speaking assessment is carried out by the class teacher in April/May of Year 11. The listening and reading assessments are carried out on the same day, one straight after the other. The writing assessment is on a different day during the summer GCSE examination period.

They also have a lot of vocabulary lists in their exercise books and also at the end of each unit of work in the textbooks which can be worked through and learnt. www.quizlet.com has a lot of useful language learning games and BBC Bitesize, zut.org (French), gut.org (German) are examples of other useful revisions sites.

Obtaining a GCSE Maths Revision Guide will provide helpful support for the above examinations. Such guides
(CGP, Letts, Longmans, Hodder) are readily available at most bookshops and online.
Textbooks and revision guides written for the new WJEC qualifications, ‘GCSE Mathematics: Numeracy’ and
‘GCSE Mathematics’, will be particularly well-suited for the current specifications.
A scientific calculator is needed in every lesson so that pupils become fluent in the more complex functions
on their own particular calculator. The Casio fx 85 series is very popular at GCSE level.
A full geometry set including a protractor and compasses is needed in every lesson so that pupils learn to use
them with precision.
Pupils have access to the ‘Hegarty Maths’ website which is a flexible online revision tool.
(www.hegartymaths.com - follow links for existing users)
Pupils have information in their exercise books that details additional content they need to master to be
successful in the GCSE Mathematics specification.
Please use our website for an overview of the GCSE course that has links to WJEC web resources.
Follow our Twitter page and interact with us @Radyr_Maths.

Pupils can also use the PiXL Maths app to further develop their skills. Pupils should ask their teacher if they need
to check their login details.

Students should be aware of Science in the news and how it impacts on everyday life. You could help them with
scientific language and encourage them to read articles to widen their general understanding of scientific
literature. Scientific literacy is an important part of the new curricula. Students are expected to understand
subject specific vocabulary and be able to extract key information from scientific texts. Questions will be longer
containing up to 100 words in some cases and based upon international PISA style questioning.
Encourage students to prepare thoroughly for tests and assessments, but most importantly, remind students to
seek support from their teachers when they find anything difficult to understand.
WJEC texts and resources are available on their website.
http://www.wjec.co.uk/qualifications/science/gcse/applied-science-double-gcse-2016/
Links to revision guides will be sent to students when these resources are published.
Additional Information:
For the Double Award Science, students will get a double GCSE grade. It is worth two GCSEs. The grades awarded
are based on a 15 point scale with the grades awarded as:
A*A*/A*A/AA/AB/BB/BC/CC/CD/DD/DE/EE/EF/FF/FG/GG
The grades though are NOT split and do not mean for example an AB grade is an A in one paper and a B in the
other. It means the double grade standard achieved is between an A and a B grade.
Triple Award Separate Science students are graded on the traditional A*-G scale in each subject area.
