2 IBM Travel and Transportation Framework for railroads

Railroads and the smarter planet Transportation is the circulatory system o our economy. Essen-tially all tangible goods ood, clothing, medicine, uel andconsumer productshave been transported to us rom some- where else. This ecosystem o vehicles, in rastructure andterminals is undergoing dramatic changes driven by a world- wide population explosion, urbanization, globalization andtechnological innovation. Today, the worlds railroads carry billions o tons o reight and tens o billions o passengerseach yearand the demand is steadily increasing. But rail-roads today are challenged by an aging in rastructure, a wide variety o geographically dispersed assets that must be man-aged, and traditional business practices that lead to ine fcien-cies and bottlenecks.

By taking a smarter approach, by marrying digital technology with physical in rastructure, railroads can capitalize on changeand create new opportunities. To do this, they must more accu-rately predict demand and optimize capacity, assets and in rastruc-ture. They must improve the end-to-end passenger experience. They need to increase operational e fciency, and fnally, rail-roads must assure passengers and government regulators thatoperations are sa e and secure.

Building a framework for growth The IBM Travel and Transportation Framework is a combina-tion o IBM so tware products and assets that, together withIBMs experience providing solutions to the rail industry, o era plat orm or a amily o solutions. The ramework can enabrailroads to address the needs o complex sales and delivery channels, optimize passenger and reight operations, and bettermanage their extensive assets to deliver on the promise o a moree fcient, sa e and secure reight and traveler experience. The

ramework is open standards based and built on commonso tware building blocks. It is designed to support advancedin ormation management, analytics, automation and integra-tion o processes such as reservations; multichannel sales andservice; asset management; operation control; and sa ety, security, and surveillance.

Addressing the business challenges oftodays rail systems

The IBM Travel and Transportation Framework ocuses on

fve key business domains that are specifc to passenger andreight rail systems.

Reservation system modernization: IBM provides innovativetools to modernize core reservation systems. We can helprailroads create a highly reliable, per ormance-optimizedreservation system that can help them deliver a wide variety oinnovative customer services while modernizing their pricingand service models. IBMs approach to modernizing reservationsystems is aligned with widely accepted industry standards.

Multichannel sales and service: The ramework can helprailroads provide a more seamless customer experience across

pretravel sales channels and on-trip touch points by creating asingle view o a passenger. The single view is accomplishedby integrating in ormation rom disparate data sources andmaking it available to customer-centric processes.

Asset optimization: The ramework provides the capability or railroads to better manage capital assets throughout their

revenue-producing li e cycle, including acquisition, utilization, maintenance, repair, overhaul and disposition. Assets caninclude rolling stock, locomotives and right-o -way equip-ment such as signals and acilities.

Operations control systems: The ramework provides solu-tions that can help railroads improve operational e ectiveness

and reduce environmental impact through better planning o schedules, load plans, acilities, crews and equipment. For rail-roads, this includes optimizing rolling stock and crews. Thesolutions use business rules and business intelligence tools ordecision support.

Security, safety and surveillance: The ramework can helprailroads integrate data rom video and other monitoringdevices and apply advanced analytics to improve security, reduce security overhead and move rom a reactive to a moreproactive response.

Addressing the challenges of the modernrailroad The IBM Travel and Transportation Framework can help railcompanies trans orm the way they operate their business, romthe rail yard to the station, rom the most isolated section o track to the back o fce. A scalable, modular, integrated plat-

orm built on industry standards, it enables rail companies tostart by solving a particular business problem in one o the fvedomains or example, reservation system modernization and then move on to execute a multichannel sales and servicesystem that enables a single view o the passenger. By leveragingthe frst project to develop a second, then a third and so on,

    economies o scale are achieved.

This incremental path to modernization, built on open standardsand the collaboration, optimization and analytical capabilitiesneeded to integrate with your existing applications, can lowercosts and reduce risk while improving the speed, sa ety, reli-ability and proftability o todays global rail systems.
