RAMBLIN’ ON VFW SHEBOYGAN MEMORIAL POST #9156 NEWSLETTER
October 2015 Commander’s Comments
Well it is almost October with our chicken fry right
around the corner on the 10th. I hope to see the famili-
ars there again this year to support us. Remember
this is one of two main fund raisers that we have dur-
ing the year to keep the post running. So far it has
been a trying summer as always. Things slow down
because people are on vacations with family and
friends or they are at their favorite campgrounds just
relaxing. Now that summer is over and fall has started
we should be picking back up at the post fish fry and
other areas of the post. As always we are looking for
a few good men and /or women to help out with the
events and the fish fry. We have been running off of a
skeleton crew for the past couple months due to hired
helpers quitting and lack of volunteers to fill in. We
welcome all help no matter how big or small it might
be. Just stop down and ask for either the fish fry chair-
man, Anita Kohlhagen, or myself and we will find you
something to do. Currently we need kitchen helpers,
bus persons, dishwashers, set-up people and tear
down people. The time we need the most help is be-
tween 3pm and 6pm on Fridays. Other things going
on at the post are the repairs to building and grounds.
The parking lot was just resealed and the electrical
has been updated to code. Things that are left are the
hall ceiling and we would like to get a fresh coat of
paint on the walls in the near future. All the work that
is being done is the first work that has been done to
the building since it has been built so it is time. If we
don’t get it done now it will be more costly the longer
we wait. There are a few things we are going to try to
bring in more revenue to the canteen also. One thing
in the works is an in–house pool league so if you like
to shoot pool and would like to shot on the league
come on down to the canteen and sign up on the list.
we have also had interest from members on starting a
VFW riders group so if you are a member in good
standings and like to ride a motorcycle or moped and
you have a license and
insurance and would
like to join the riders
group then call me at
920-254-8623 and give
me your name and a
contact number. For
those of you that are
wondering what the riders group does from the infor-
mation I have received so far. The riders are people
that are VFW members that ride motorcycles mopeds
or three wheelers. What the group is designed to do is
put on fundraising events to benefit both the VFW and
the community. All proceeds from events are donated
out to community projects, schools, police depart-
ments for equipment, firefighters first responder
groups, boys and girls club projects things of that na-
ture, whatever your group decides to do the fund rais-
er for is where the money would go. This is a way for
the members that don’t want to deal with the politics
that can go on at a post but still want to help out the
community or fellow veterans and want that camara-
derie that we all had when serving this great nation.
So once again if you have an interest in joining the rid-
ers group call me at 920-254-8623 leave your name
and number if I don’t answer so I can call you back
and keep you updated as I find out more information
on the whole process. I would also in closing like to
thank all the members and nonmembers that are help-
ing by volunteering to make things run smooth at the
post.
Yours in comradeship
Commander Jeffery Cummings

From 1 Solomon, chapter 30:
Three days later, when David and his men arrived
home at their city of Ziklag, they found that the Ama-
lekites had raided the city and burned it to the ground, 2 carrying off all the women and children.
3 As David
and his men looked at the ruins and realized what had
happened to their families, 4 they wept until they could
weep no more. 5 (David’s two wives, Ahinoam and
Abigail, were among those who had been captured.) 6 David was seriously worried, for in their bitter grief
for their children, his men began talking of killing him.
But David took strength from the Lord.
7 Then he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the
ephod! (elaborate garment worn by the high priest)”
So Abiathar brought it.
8 David asked the Lord, “Shall I chase them? Will I
catch them?”
And the Lord told him, “Yes, go after them; you will
recover everything that was taken from you!”
9-10 So David and his six hundred men set out after the
Amalekites. When they reached Besor Brook, two
hundred of the men were too exhausted to cross, but
the other four hundred kept going. 11-12
Along the way
they found an Egyptian youth in a field and brought
him to David. He had not had anything to eat or drink
for three days and nights, so they gave him part of a
fig cake, two clusters of raisins, and some water, and
his strength soon returned.
13 “Who are you and where do you come from?” David
asked him.
“I am an Egyptian—the servant of an Amalekite,” he
replied. “My master left me behind three days ago be-
cause I was sick. 14
We were on our way back from
raiding the Cherethites in the Negeb, and had raided
the south of Judah and the land of Caleb, and had
burned Ziklag.”
15 “Can you tell me where they went?” David asked.
The young man replied, “If you swear by God’s name
that you will not kill me or give me back to my master,
then I will guide you to them.”
16 So he led them to the Amalekite encampment. They
were spread out across the fields, eating and drinking
and dancing with joy because of the vast amount of
loot they had taken from the Philistines and from the
men of Judah. 17
David and his men rushed in among
them and slaughtered them all that night and the en-
tire next day until evening. No one escaped except
four hundred young men who fled on camels. 18-
19 David got back everything they had taken. The men
recovered their families and all of their belongings,
and David rescued his two wives. 20
His troops round-
ed up all the flocks and herds and drove them on
ahead of them. “These are all yours personally, as
your reward!” they told David.
21 When they reached Besor Brook and the two hun-
dred men who had been too exhausted to go on, Da-
vid greeted them joyfully. 22
But some of the ruffians
among David’s men declared, “They didn’t go with us,
so they can’t have any of the loot. Give them their
wives and their children and tell them to be gone.”
23 But David said, “No, my brothers! The Lord has kept
us safe and helped us defeat the enemy. 24
Do you
think that anyone will listen to you when you talk like
this? We share and share alike—those who go to bat-
tle and those who guard the equipment.”
25 From then on David made this a law for all of Israel,
and it is still followed.
David sounds like a true leader.
